@dannybob428 жыл бұрын
Unbreakable was a Masterpiece, the issue I have with the ending however was the text shots, it was a bit unnecessary since it was implied that David would catch him and it would've probably opened it up to a sequel much easier. But it is better than Sixth Sense, the twist is brilliant because Elijah's insanity makes sense and it's a matter of both of them finding purpose 'Now that you know who you are, I know who I am' Other directing cues were great too such as name choices; Elijah the prophet and harbinger of the Messiah and David the righteous king in battle and civil and criminal justice, the foreshadowing is incredible and it is one of the greatest superhero movies of all time
@ChadtheDJguy8 жыл бұрын
I totally understand the text thing. The first time I watched it, I thought it was out of place. However, on my second viewing, I realized that it was almost entirely necessary. We don't usually expect a text frame like that when we watch a movie, which is why it felt unnatural. But on the second viewing when I knew it was coming, I realized that the scene would have been too much to take in without it. David (and the audience) have just made a startling discovery, and I feel that the movie's final and perhaps most impactful line ("They called me Mr. Glass") would not have been so impactful had it flowed right out of the previous conversation. After we are allowed a few short seconds to breathe and contemplate what we've just learned, Elijah delivers the line like a final punch to the gut, leaving us in perfect awe. I think it works great.

@avanishdutta26583 жыл бұрын
Thing is, i don't know if you and your wife ever agree with me, it is the fact that m.night can tell stories which are grounded horror thrillers or just thrillers. I don't believe he is a one shot director, but i think he is capable of making great stories. His movies shocked me too like the sixth sense, unbreakable, signs, the village but he entertains the idea too much that every plot twists in his movies can work. The truth is, they always cannot. You must give little hints on the twists throughout the movie so that audiences can put two plus two four together. Twists work becuase they are an illusion to the eye. In front of the audience, but invisible to the eye. Even psycho and empire strikes back's twists are lile that. Watch them again and you will notice.

@Wasabifold9 жыл бұрын
+Dean444ful OMG yes, I watched the movie and I was like really? That lazy text ending BS? Like the scene would have been so much more powerful if he just left it at Bruce Willis walking away and that poetic line, "They called me Mr.Glass". Or maybe this, follow my thinking. Bruce is walking away but instead of the camera following him all the way out, it stops and Willis walks past it, then Jackson says it was the kids and the camera zooms in during a long period of pause till it's right up in Jackson's face and you can't distinguish the background. Then he says the line "They called me Mr.Glass" and we zoom out to see him in a straight jacket, in a padded cell locked away. Boom Movie done.

The scene that gets to me is the one right before the final one. It shows Elijah's mother speaking to David and telling him about how it was a miracle that Elijah was able to recover from his physical and mental spills of his youth. You can see the sense of joy in her eyes and in her countenance. Her beloved son, who had always been the perennial underdog, was able to turn it all around. I think Shyamalan's first two films are truly excellent. It's hard to believe how much he seems to have Iost his touch since then. Maybe he can get it back with his newest film but it seems to have gone for good. Such a shame, he could have been one of the best of his generation - and to be fair The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are both classic movies so even with his atrocious treatment of Avatar I still think he has those early works in his favour. Oh and the music in Unbreakable is stunning - a perfect blend of bittersweet optimism and tragic sadness. It's the best score I've heard from James Newton Howard.
@nikkis.20669 жыл бұрын
hyperdeath84 After Earth and Avatar are such shills it's hard to believe that he made his beginning films. The Village was the last one I liked from him...Lady in the Water and The Happening is where you def saw some problems. I kinda hate to pose this question, but did he get lucky with his first few films? Did he have a ghost writer or some unmentioned help early on? Because there's no way you can watch The Happening or After Earth, watch Unbreakable and think the same guy directed and made them.
@hyperdeath849 жыл бұрын
Nick Santillo I haven't actually seen most of his bad films - I tend to listen when all the critics from professional magazine critics down to KZbin guys tell me they are shit. I thought Signs was quite good even with the water thing and then I skipped the rest until The Last Airbender just to see how bad it is. It does seem that he got lucky on the first two but they are so meticulously crafted that I can't attribute it to luck. I don't know, he's a strange one indeed.

hyperdeath84 its not luck, making 2 incredible movies and one really good movie (signs) is not like winning the lottery or getting a good hand in poker, it takes INCREDIBLE talent and dedication. What happened is a lot a more simple than what people are making it out to be. He LOST his inspiration, simple as that. He lost the motivation to make a great movie and this happened right after The Village was critically panned by the globe. THere is actually a really compelling video on it you cna check out here on youtube. I agree with you 100% about his first 2 movies, MASTERPIECES! Especially Unbreakable....

That scene with the Orange Man is so perfect, but the follow up of David hanging up his "cape" and effortlessly carrying his wife to bed really gets me every time. Not only was David Superman in hiding, he doesn't realize until the end that he has had his Lois all along. And that line at the end "Now that we know who you are, I know who I am" Tragic. Technically there is a 2nd twist, it is a dual origin story.

Same FKN thing with Insomnia. Sure its made by Nolan,but that doesn't mean it's connected with The Dark Knight or Inception. Watch the movie for what it is!

Insomnia is fucking great! Underrated for sure!

***** Insomnia is possibly Nolan's best film, I'd say. There's no fat on the film like Interstellar or Dark Knight Rises, and it's more character-driven than most of his films. Pacino and Williams were brilliant in it.

Earl Chatterton Dark Knight Rises is pretty bad, it's the only blemish on his otherwise spotless record. It's his Alien 3.

My favourite scene is actually the one right before when Elijah tries to stop the man and falls down the stairs. The imagery and symbolism of his cane shattering like glass was phenomenal. Not to mention the score and Samuel's performance! Brilliant!

Unbreakable just gets better every time I watch it,it has aged really well over the years, it's definitely the most realistic superhero movie ever made,the performances the story are just top notch, Bruce Willis gives one of the best performances of his career in this movie without a doubt,that scene when that lady at his sons school is telling David about how he nearly died drowning in the pool was so moving and it's the sadness in David's eyes that lingers in my memory the most, so whenever I see the straight to DVD movies and the other films where Bruce Willis is barely trying or it just looks like he can't even be bothered i always come back to unbreakable and it reminds me how great Bruce Willis used to be as an actor......

Unbreakble is also My favorite Shaymalan film. Such a unique, underrated and missunderstood movie. Great perfomances from Willis and Jackson. The whole movies was really well made, and i got really exited because of good character devolopment, and an intresting story and a misterious touch to it. Unbreakble is really an awesome movie. 8/10. Wich is sad because it's the last M. Night flick that was......

Dont forget cinematography. Use of lenses, frames and simbology on the image! For example: Elijah is born and we see him mostly through the reflection of a mirror...Mr. Glass.

I'm so happy that Unbreakable has become the cult movie it now is. I loved this film the first time it came out, even though the marketing had been misleading, and it is still one of my favorite films.

What I love about it was the music score by James Newtown Howard including “Visions” was the best David Dunn’s superhero theme ever. I get chills and yay, that was awesome and the part where he stops the bad guy with one shot was Incredible. The ending is a nice twist, it could be wonder that Elijah was the bad guy all long and the reveal was pretty shocking and of course that Elijah founds this man an opposite of what they are like hero and a villain. That’s was a good movie and I rather watch than “The Sixth Sense.” If “Glass” don’t have “Visions” and bring back James Newtown Howard, that could make it cool.

100% This is one the BEST films made. The writing absolutely blows my mind...and yes, it does actually get better with subsequent viewing. Especially if you're a comic book/super hero fan, this film is absolute Gold.

I can't believe it took me 16 years to finally watch this movie. I remember my family may have rented it or I remember seeing the box art for it at Blockbuster back in the early 2000s, but I always passed it up. I must have been 13 or something at the time. So those types of movies didn't interest me. I just watched it today, I liked it a lot. I couldn't tell Sam Jackson was a bad guy up until the end, when he was having that art showing, I looked at him and thought he looked pretty villainous, and after I thought his mother made that little speech about certain villains battling with their intellect. Over all, I enjoyed it a lot.

Mr.Glass- "You know what the scariest thing is? TO NOT KNOW YOUR PLACE IN THIS WORLD. To not know why you're here. That is just an awful feeling." David Dunn- "What have you done?" Mr.Glass- "I almost gave up hope. There were so many times I questioned myself." David Dunn- "You killed all those people?" Mr.Glass- 'But I found you. So many sacrifices,, just to find you. David- Jesus Christ........ Mr.Glass- "Now that we know who you are, I know who I am. I'm not a mistake! It all makes sense! In a comic you know how you can tell who the arch villain is going to be? He's the EXACT opposite of the hero! And most of the times they're friends. Like you and me." Mr.Glass- I should have known back when. You know why David? Because of the KIDS!............................................... "They called me MR. GLASS!"

Great review, Chris. I feel the same. I've told people Unbreakable was way ahead of its time for years and one of the most underappreciated movies I can think of. Its almost a film noir version of a super hero movie. Can't wait for the sequel.

The most under rated movie ever. The moment when Bruce slips the newspaper to his son and his son realizes that his father has finally accepted the reality , in that moment the reaction of the kid was priceless. IMDB should learn to rate movies like Mr. Stuckmann

I just love the themes of fate and purpose in this film. There has to be someone for us to point and say "They are the bad guys" - almost as if there HAS to be a bad guy. People were awful critics to have expected another 6th Sense twist and not see the genius of Unbreakable's twist. Unbreakable, The Dark Knight trilogy, V for Vendetta and Spiderman 2 are some of the most profound and important comic book movies that were more than the story they were telling. Excellent stuff!!!

*SPOILERS* @ Chris - got inspired by you talking about how the swimming pool scene inspired you; that scene, and the subsequent scenes are so powerful and in large part due to James Newton Howard's score. Evening the ending Mr. Glass reveal, when that score crescendoes again... GOOD GOD! Gets me right in the feels every goddamn time. The subtext - about identity and self-actualisation - is also so incredibly well weaved into the plot as its equally relevant to the arcing of the villain and the hero; they arc at the same time, right at the very end, making for some emotional stuff.

*kinda spoilery*I love this film, I’ve seen it so many time cause i just love all the backstory and the growth of David and how this is so important to Elijah. I love how Shyamalan tries to play the realistic hero with no much else than the security cape and “intuition” . And also for me it was more original and refreshing to watch after sooo many marvel movies, cause i loved considering that this could happen and not be an alien invasion, this has a psycopath and a terrorist mastermind , and just with that does so much more than many superhero movies and it has so much depth . This movie always gets me, every time, so now im freaking out for Glass
@tjjordan42077 жыл бұрын
I like the twist at the end of this film, because when we find out that superheroes exist in a realistic way, I found myself asking, "Wait, wouldn't there be villains that exist in a realistic way as well?" So when that twist happened, it made sense to me.
