If I thought it was going to get so cold my pipes would freeze even though I trickled the water. I turned the breaker off to my well, drained pressure tank, hot water heater and plumb lines. I stocked up on bottled water. I'd say good luck, but your a real trooper. You got this brother.👍

Great video and extremely helpful! I'll be keeping you all in prayer that you all stay warm and safe. I live in Southwestern lower Michigan and Wednesday afternoon they're saying the windchill could be -47. Are bracing for the next five days but Wednesday through Friday supposed to be the worst. I'm so grateful to God though for all of the things we have to keep us warm and Monday I'm going to be going out and trying to get some plastic for the windows. We live in an apartment but it's so pretty cold already. I have a handicapped daughter and I worry about her circulation she doesn't feel things the way we do. Luckily I got her a electric blanket for Christmas so that should be helpful in the fact if the power stays on. But preventive measures like you were talking about can save your life

Just wanna say it’s been a few years and I use to watch your channel religiously around the time we decided to start “Homesteading” Good 4+ yrs ago... rabbits, goats, chickens, turkey, ducks, geese, and a few cows later 😂... Here I am. And after watching idk how many other channels I always find my way back to yours. Stay well. Great straight to the point advise as always. Here in WI... We prep for Winter Period. There is no “it might be a bad one”... We just assume it’s going to be. Stock up on food, water, etc. Rather go into spring with extras.. both us and the animals. We do use heated buckets, but we are prepared for power failure. Be prepared, and Be prepared to be Prepared.

GREAT video!! We do search and rescue here in the California Sierras and advise folks to always let someone know where you are going, your route as well as you car make/model and license plate number in case you do not get home and they need to send help. Also keep power bars or high energy bars in the car along with a gallon of water, because these will help provide your body with energy which creates heat. We also have a sleeping bag in the car which can be unzipped and used as an extra warm blanket. We have simple plain cream coloured quilts as drapes because they provide extra insulation that keeps heat in while providing light since the sun can show thru light coloured fabric. And do not forget to either have extra insulation around water pipes or allow water inside kitchen/bath sinks to drip so they don't freeze. Today I was listening to advise being given to those with vehicles who live in areas that will be getting the -50 temperatures dues to the polar vortex. One expert noted keep a fuel tank more than half-full helps to prevent fuel lines from freezing and that the cold can affect tire pressure. A temperature change of just 10 degrees can cause a 10 percent reduction, or constriction, of air in tires. And never leave medications like insulin or any medication that has to be shaken before use. Also beverage in cans or bottles can expand and explode, so make sure they don't freeze in your vehicle. And NEVER leave pets and kids in a car in freezing weather!!

Prayers for you and yours for good health. Good to see you back on. Great tips. Thanks for sharing. And absolutely southern KY isn't use to the temps coming either. Stay safe and warm....... I roll blankets for the bottom of my door just for extra insulation.
@ADrunkBassist5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, here's one. We use this 2 inch thick polyfoam insulation on the metal roofs we install. It's got a foil coating on one side and a vapor barrier on the other size. If you can get something like that, just cut it to the size of your windows and tape it in with some chrome tape. The foam acts like a styrofoam cup and the foil reflects heat back into the house. Only thing is you lose all your daylight coming through the window but if it's cold enough you don't care.

We got caught in an unexpected snow/ ice storm in Colorado on vacation in a motel without any cooking or refrigerator. This is what we did used the trunk of car to store food and I used the electric iron turned upside down balanced on trash can. Put frying pan on iron to cook food. Put extra blanket over window and door to insulate with towel rolled up at bottom of door. Bathroom had an electric heater, just used to take chill out. Sorta got tired of scrambled eggs.

One of the best things that you can have on hand in case of emergency is a large full can of Crisco (the solid shortening, not the cooking oil) and a taper candle that is at least a bit taller than the can. In the event that your lights go out, or even if you just need a bit more heat. Simply stick the candle down into the center of the full can (you can use 2 or 3 candles for more light and heat). Then just light the candle, it will burn for several days straight (though the more candles you use the quicker the Crisco burns away). Solid shortening is actually a long, clean burning fuel source.

I’ve lived in north central Minnesota my whole life. I had -31 this morning and it got to -4 for a high. Wearing a face mask is good but I found putting a bandana over the mask helps in two ways. It keeps the throat area covered and your able to breath through your mouth or talk without risk of the cold cracking the enamel on your teeth. If you do not have much snow it would behoove you to cover your sewer and drain field. Hay,straw,concrete blankets even building insulation. In your car you should have access to a snow emergency kit that you have put together before hand. I’m sure u tube should have something on this. When it’s frigid like this I use a stout walking stick for balance . Open all your cupboard doors where you have sink or drain pipes in. All these suggestions I learned the hard way. There was once I ran into a major problem when the polar vortex was -58. I actually thought that my life might end. Think things out before making your moves and plan on a Murphy’s law scenario and you should be fine.
