When you look deeper into this short, it can be interpreted as an allegory for alcohol. In fact, when you replace the coffee cup with alcohol, the story is about a washed up woman who is trying to drink her broken marriage away. In all of her memories, everything that is important to her is drawn in white (the cat, the medical vent (representing her excitement for becoming a mother), the table cloth on their date, her wedding dress, the baby's coffin, the baby carrier and the ring holder), and she steps on most of these items like garbage. The events of the memories change through every run (in the scene where she is crying over her dead (or crippled) son, first time she is being comforted by her husband, second time she and the husband are distant, third time she is all alone), representing her refusal to accept how the course of events really played out, to the point where she can't even remember how it happened anymore. The one memory that her is still vulnerable to is the marriage proposal because it remind her of where everything began and how happy she was at the time to begin her new life in marriage. I might be looking too deeply into this, but this entire short seems to be up for interpretation.

How many of you noticed that She was pregnant when he proposed. Suzanne(Blender Monkey) in the skating area. The baby was a GIRL. Each time she threw that cat number of coffee is increasing. Each time in the cemetery crying becomes intense. She was always a playful and coffee addict But what happened in the park changed everything and she couldn't get the child back. The car accident happened in the park was the reason for the child's hospitalisation. In the hospital monitor beeps differently indicating child's health They don't fight in a fancy roof top restaurant its the hospital cafeteria. When the baby dies he goes off without supporting her(Because she was the reason) If you cut each run in each location the story is linear. Now alone in the apartment From 11am to 6pm (apartment clock) she keep drinking coffee and thinks over and over about what happened like a punishment.She want to stop it wr all started but couldn't. She doesn't like coffee anymore, She doesn't even have a pet to give her hope, She is not playful anymore the skateboard lies in a corner.

It's definitely not the hospital cafeteria, there's a bar and umbrellas and wine glasses on the table. Also she has long hair at that point so it's way after the baby died, probably around "now" Cool how there's so much to read into it! I wish there was a more satisfying resolution for the cat though, that just seems consistently cruel and angry -edit- ok having thought about it a bit more I don't think the white glowing cat's real, I think it's a metaphor for her finding peace and moving on (and possibly getting an actual cat to help fill that void in her life) and she's violently rejecting that idea, just as she starts to rerun events in her head again
@nathanbrader75914 жыл бұрын
@@cactustactics Look again and you'll see it's not just the cat that's mistreated. She even kills a man by landing on his head in the wedding part! It's clear to me that she can't stop thinking about what she's lost and she's gone over the same memories so many times that she doesn't regard them with any care or respect anymore. The film is comparing that struggle to playing a computer game where you keep trying to get past that one bit but don't make any more progress than last time.

Had to rewatch and pause a few times, to really appreciate the story. It is hard to tie the narrative to a cohesive story, but since it involves coffee, my interpretation is that we run through life often energized by various stimulants and frequently forget to stop and enjoy the moment. Watching this movie requires you to pay close attention to the details. I watched it five times and I noticed there are small differences in each loop. The proposal events are same in each loop but.. 1. When the baby is in critical condition, In first loop, her BF is pampering her, In the second loop he is just sitting by her side not looking at the baby, And In the last loop he is not there and She(Protagonist) is crying alone. 2. In the church, There are 7, 10, and 12 people respectively in 1st, 2nd and 3rd series of events (loops). 3. In 1st loop only her BF is hitting the table. In the 2nd loop both are hitting the table. And in the 3rd loop only the girl is hitting the table. 4. The time in the wall clock is different each she throws the cat, which are 10:05, 12:30 and 2:30. Which means she remembering the past events again and again at different times in the dark room. 5. At the funeral, The first time the girl has an umbrella, The second time she does not have umbrella and the third time She is on her knees. 7. They are standing in different positions next to baby stroller. They are kissing each other in the 1st loop, The girl is drinking coffee in the 2nd and She is flipping the skateboard in the final loop. 8. At the coffee shop, the barista is in slightly different positions. He is at the cash counter in the first loop, He is making/drinking coffee in the second and looking for something in the lower cupboard. 9. If you notice carefully, She is already pregnant at the time of proposal.(Someone else's comment gave me this idea) The small differences in each series of events define either the different scenarios after a marriage proposal OR It is her inability to remember the past events correctly which causes the differences in each loop. These small details make every series of events a little bit different but also they deepen the meaning of this movie which is to show the depressing drastic events of the protagonist's life in a slightly different manner. This movie seems even more real and deeper and depressing as you watch it again and again. Well, this is my theory. The makers has done some great work in showing us the pain the main character is going through.

I think she made a mistake with her skateboard and her baby died as a result. It drove a wedge between her and her husband as he wasn't present when the child was pronounced dead. Each loop shows her memories slowly changing from an idealised revision to slowly coming to terms with the truth of what happened. That's why in the final revision, she's getting on the skateboard in the park (instead of hugging her husband in round one) she's alone with the dying baby, she's on the ground with grief at the funeral, and she alone is losing her temper with her husband at the breakup scene.

I quite enjoyed how thought-provoking all the story elements were, and them being out of order gives way to some ambiguity. The small changes in behavior were quite enjoyable, such as when she reached out in the hospital room near the end. Lovely animation, great job! SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS down below I interpret the scenes like the argument changing "to her favor" as her thinking how she could have acted differently during certain parts of her life. One thing she found herself permanently unable to change was the death of her baby, represented by the ground always collapsing. The scenes with the baby being born and dying had the same fate, although with the husband missing. When she considered changing how she responded to the proposal, she may have had second thoughts on changing that as well, wondering if changing it all down to the last moment would have been worth it. But as the coffee rush wore off, she decided (or realized) she's unable to change the past, and overthinking what she could have done differently back then does not matter now. My questions are what the playground scene was about, perhaps the baby had survived for a bit? A scene she worked to keep the same, however, was the cold apartment where she purposefully threw the cat out the scene to keep herself being alone, I wonder how that could be interpreted.

The story doesn't make any sense. The series of events are like this: proposal > marriage > baby born > car hitting the baby > baby in hospital > baby death > fighting over who's to blame for the accident > sitting alone post breakup Now, if you notice, the girl's already pregnant at the time of proposal and marriage. So trying to change and reject the proposal wouldn't stop the baby from being born. In fact, rejecting it would make her a single mother and that would be almost as bad. The next thing she tries to change is the fight. First time, the guy blames her, second both blame each other and the third time she blames him. That doesn't change anything really. However, what could lead to a better ending is trying to prevent the accident from happening. But every time she lets it happen and it makes no sense tbh

so basically, everytime she drinks coffee, she wakes up to reality little by little, at the end she stops cuz she still wants to keep that last scene (proposal) which was the most wonderful part of her life and so she drops her cup not wanting to ruin or wake up from it or that she just simply isnt able to get rid of it Here's the proper timeline: meet and kiss at the park >>> gets pregnant and proposed >>> gets married >>> going through labour >>> baby is dying >>> baby's funeral >>> argument (divorce i think) >>> sitting alone with cat

@remem954 жыл бұрын
Just my interpretation: She thought so much about these pivotal moments that she doesn't know which parts are the truth and which parts are made up by her mind, overthinking, doubting her emotions and decisions and getting more emotional every turn as roles and blame shifts. In the park noone looks at the child until the wagon already moves as if she is unsure whose fault it was or there is noone to blame cause it was an accident, so she blames herself (skating on the wagon symbolically). Not sure if it actually points to an accident or she had a miscarriage, theres hints for both... The emotions in the scenes get more intense (the distance between the two growing in the hospital, her breaking down at the funeral, the wedding being more cheerful), the amount of caffeine affecting her as she looses herself in the memories. The shift of moods shows an exhausting back and forth of thoughts going in circles. And throughout there is an unspeakable anger that is visible through her actions, punching her way through everything in her path, related or not. (I have no idea what the point behind the prominent white object in every scene is, most are related to the child I guess?) There is a lot to unpack for a 3 minute movie... great work

The fact that even though she tries to get her mind out of what has happened she is thinking about it over and over again, and each time the little things change, exactly as it happens when you recall something many times. And that last scene, when she tries to reach her old overjoyed self to warn her, to tell her not to go through down this road ending in pain, unable of course cause it's just a memory, not time travel, and then dives into melancholy in her dark room, alone, is a gem. From a story point of view, I think that that was just incredible. You guys at blender did an amazing job of subtlety showing the change and progression of her recollected of her life. I was driven speechless by this story without words. From the animation and art point of view I was equally blown away. As someone who is currently studying 3D art and animation, I can see, as I’m sure that anyone can, that you guys put so much loving care and attention into this project. And I can happily say that in this time of viruses, quarantine and isolation, that this sad, yet beautiful animation will help me to focus on my studies and retain that ever important hope that the world will get better despite all the trials and hardships that the we all now face.

I think I found something else. See how the cat that she throws out of the window is white? Now look in every scene the "main object" of that scene (the object this specific scene is about) is white. In the hospital the sheet on her stomach, the incubator, the tablecloth on the rooftop, her wedding dress in the church, the coffin at the funeral, the baby carriage right after, the hood of the car that she crashes on before the coffeeshop and even the ring when he proposes in the coffee shop. Maybe what they're trying to say is that she would just like to throw all of these memories away. What I say now is a little bit more freely interpreted but lots of advisors for depression etc. say that you should stay active to keep these endlessly torturing thoughts out of your mind. And coffee is known to wake you up, make you stay active and do stuff. As I said, really feely interpreted here. Then in the end it seems like no matter what she does she always replays the tragedy in her head and can't get rid of the "cat" that resembles her memories. What are your thoughts about that?
@chubawaba28634 жыл бұрын
I think it's more that she drinks coffee to escape dealing with her memories which leaves her in an endless cycle of grief. The hesitation at the till is possibly thinking about facing it but instead she continues to power through life until she breaks down.

At least things ended up working out for the lady who got stood up at the bar! People have been over a lot of this but the whole thing really caught my attention, so I may as well post my take on it. It's not sequential, and it basically goes: proposal -> marriage -> birth -> park (accident?) -> baby in ICU (the pram is there) -> funeral -> argument -> sitting alone in apt with everything boxed up it's ordered that way for narrative flow (like contrasting the two hospital events, or marriage/funeral with sun/rain) and you can also tell by whether the woman is pregnant, how long her hair is, if her husband has a beard etc So she's sitting alone in her apartment, where everything's in boxes like she's moving out. She's thinking about all the events that led up to this, and each time the focus changes. The first run they have a nice small wedding, they're all happy and in love in the park, and when the baby dies they're equally sad and he's comforting her. In the breakup the husband is angry while she looks dejected, like he has a reason to be mad at her. On each run it shifts, they're more distant in every scene, except for the wedding which gets bigger and more celebratory. She gets more and more broken up about the baby's death, while he seems unaffected and bored, and ultimately is absent from the hospital. The breakup eventually flips, to where she's angry and he looks like she has a reason to be So it feels like, as she drinks and runs through events in her mind, she becomes more and more resentful, the good memories about their loving relationship and how they handled the tragedy become sour. The bigger weddings feel like she's imagining everything was much better in the beginning, and then it was all... downhill... from there. And when she ends up back at the coffee shop, seeing how happy she was to be proposed to, she's tempted to reach for that memory and accept that they really were in love, like in her first run-through... and each time she rejects it, and ends up alone, looking more and more depressed as the empties pile up around her -------- Personally I'm not 100% that there was a runaway accident with the baby. The pram she rides is sort of an unreal object, it could be conceptual - and besides, it's there (undamaged) in the ICU and then in the apartment, being used as storage for a box. It doesn't seem like something you'd keep around in that situation, y'know? The park might just represent their relationship after the baby was born, and the baby developed an illness which eventually tore their lives apart. Could be why the baby is initially crying (representing it being sick) but start laughing as she reconsiders the past Same with the cat, I think that's conceptual - like maybe the idea of getting one, having a companion now she's alone, moving on and replacing that void in her life. And she's angrily throwing that idea aside, violently (which makes sense since it's the most shocking thing in the video I reckon) And I'm not sure about the coffee - people don't generally sit drinking coffee and leaving lots of cups strewn around their feet, becoming more aggressive and depressed. The energy of the video is completely at odds with what she's actually doing, sitting in a chair for hours, in the dark, thinking. I'm not sure if she's meant to have an alcohol problem in general, but I think there's a strong case for it as a theme. In the park, after the lovey kissing in the first run, the second one has her drinking and him looking at her with his arms folded. And that "cup" is a different colour to every other coffee cup in the film It would explain why there's tension, why they maybe break up before the baby goes into hospital, maybe why she's there alone - he wasn't there because he didn't know, and they weren't together? He's with her at the funeral (where she ends up literally weeping on the floor, not composed like in her first memory). She's the one who's violently angry at the bar. So maybe I was wrong, and the idealised, loving relationship the first time round is the fiction, and the truth is what she finally arrives at, where she has a problem, where things started with so much happiness and promise? She always chooses the "coffee" though... Also (as if this wasn't long enough!!) there's a lot going on in the backgrounds. At the park especially, there's a boy and a girl with a ponytail on the playground equipment, and also someone in a hat who goes on the bench / on the skate ramp / on the zip line, and ends up flat on the floor in the last run. Not sure what that signifies but it feels like stuff breaking down! if you read this far, uh thanks and I hope it wasn't a waste of time!

Like all of us, I first thought this was just a lazy repetition of the same sequence, but as soon as I noticed the slight differences among the sequences, I then realized there was a meaning behind it. The thing though for me is, my interpretation is quite unique I think, and most likely unrelated to the actual story behind the animation lol; but what I interpret is a woman going through the same tedious routine everyday, and unhealthily relying on coffee to replenish the very little energy left in her. Y'know, regarding monotonousness, lack of direction/purpose, absence of any real progress in life, and the like.
@dumebiafran11804 жыл бұрын
Actually that the story is about the misfortune that happened in her life. So the repetition is her thinking about how things could have gone differently to avoid that misfortune. But at the end, her baby still dies in all three scenarios.
