In this video I finish making a panelled design coffee table with a hidden secret drawer using beech and birch for my mum and dad as a gift. In this video I make a top for the table, table top mounts that allow for expansion and contraction of the wood, and I try to match some existing furniture in their living room (from memory and without seeing it due to the current lockdown measures, which was tricky!).

Who wouldn't love to have something homemade by one of their children. Another nice job Keith. I too like the spring hinge drawer. Good job Keith.

Love ...love push pull drawer. Table is perfect. No drawer handle is the best idea. Had the push pull on many closets and cabinets loved it😍

Lovely finish on the wood there Keith. I reckon you add that makers mark so when you are old and grey sat with your feet up watching Antiques Roadshow, one episode the expert will go: ‘Did you know this is a Keith Brown? Well here the mark clearly shows’😀😀

Really nice work. Looks rather like an old-fashioned linen chest. The concealed draw is a very good idea. Stay safe.

Nice work Keith, good tip I learnt for reducing movement in solid wood tops is to make sure you apply finish to both sides of the wood. Logic is, the side with no finish may absorb moisture at a different rate to the finished side and therefore cause movement with seasonal change.

Hi Keith, nice project, well executed. I've never had much luck staining Beech, some pieces seem to have uneven porosity, resulting in a blotchy finish.

Bet they love that Keith, i wish i had been into woodwork before my mum passed away nearly 3 years ago now... Could you have used your domino to create the elongated hole in the top fastener...just a thought

Only thing I’d have done extra is finished the underside of the top also so both faces absorb moisture at the same rate to try keep it staying flat as possible.

I have seen a few discussions regarding the orientation of the wood for table tops. The jury is still out. As it is only 450mm wide, as you say, I don't think you will have any problems with the top bowing. So focused on the job, that you forgot the drawer supports were only screwed. It happens to the best of us 😎. Hidden by the slides themselves. Great job Keith. Parents will be very happy

Cheers Peter. Yeah I’d be more concerned if it were pine or something with less tight grain, fingers crossed it’ll be ok! I always make silly mistakes like the one with the drawer slides when I’m jumping between projects, I should learn to concentrate on one thing at a time 😅

Great work Keith, turned out very nice and something to improve your parents life in lockdown :) You didn't mention putting the top together with a spring joint, but you said the wood was very dry so hopefully no need ;) I don't think 18 min is too long for a vid, but it's your call.

Colour isn't to my taste, but looks fab! Did you coat the bottom of the top with the varnish as well? Might end up cupping if moisture can get in at the bottom but not the top, especially with the grain not being the opposite. Would using the domino to cut the holes for the mounts not have been quicker than drilling holes then filing it down? Just a thought that could save you time!
@paulmantegna76

It looks like you didn't seal the bottom of the table top. (I could be wrong, perhaps I missed it). Every time I've done that I've got bowing, now I seal both top and bottom. Over all a good job.
