First time viewer here… I love the metaphor of the magazine ads. I’m an ACT therapist, and I’ve never heard this particular metaphor for cognitive defusion. Well done. Now I’m a subscriber!

Thank you so much for this video!!! I'm definitely going to watch this whenever I feel overwhelmed about intrusive thoughts 🥺🙏🏻 You're a huge help in helping me realise thoughts are just thoughts, and that they don't mean anything about me! they're a result of my very high functioning anxiety ... you're an angel ♥️

Intrusive thoughts- harming myself or loved ones - what is real - what's the point of life - I'm going to die - I'm scared - nothing matters, life is meaningless in the grand scheme

Oh my god! Same thoughts happen to me all the time. We have these thoughts because we value life and living beings. When the mind tell us otherwise we freak out because we wanna protect our lives.

I happened upon this video as I am dealing with insomnia due to anxious thoughts about my recent job promotion as a manager on an aeroplane.... I feel so much pressure in terms of safety of everyone and being on time. I have never experienced such pressure or anxiety before . Thank you for this video and all your shorts on vagus nerve exercises.... I've found them incredibly helpful 🙂

That's a great way to explain defusion. Love the example of thoughts being like ads in a magazine.

Excellent. You got it girl. But doesn't that bring the question of where these thoughts come from-to judge if they have any value? as a thought I should pay attention to?

those thoughts are brought to life which really cannot be compared to the magazine ads which is used in here I am not sure why that description was used you can skim through a magazine but it is very hard to do the same through your mind just by thinking of doing this will make most people think of that thought lol and trying to move past a thought is also not a good thing it is like putting something in a closest in your home the out of site out of mind yes you may not see it but it is always there until you deal wit hit and that is the discipline that most people never have learned to do . to say something or write it down then looking at it changes the perspective of that thought it is brought into this world into you reality in the physical world instead of the world inside your mind . those thoughts come from somewhere I think that i tis important to find out where they originated when you find that you may realize that it has nothing to do with the thought at all ir could have been something small that over time it cooked and brewed and things were added that changed the original thought , for me I call it the " what if, what could be, what might be " Demons its close to the childhood fear of the dark a car drives past while you are laying in bed and you see a shadow move those demons I just mention kick in and instead of getting out of bed to turning on the like and seeing that it is nothing you stay in bed and the fear grows creating something that isnt there and keep you freaked out in bed . those are the same demons of anxiety and those thoughts which started out all cause from a car driving past a window creating a shadow ;)

Have you covered anything that explains overcoming victim mentalities? Asking as someone who has been working to overcome my own after living in that mindset for the last 28 years.

I have a harm intrusive thought before sleep, and it is so scary that I cannot sleep. I’ve been through ERP, but the thought still rattles me. I will try saying I have an intrusive thought. I notice that I’m having an intrusive thought, and I notice that the intrusive thought is stressing me out..

What do you do when it is one intrusive thought after another? Feels very over whelming and makes it difficult to focus on the task at hand. For example, trying to study and getting intrusive thoughts about failing and not comprehending. Dealing with the thoughts and labeling them takes time away from trying to study which makes for more intrusive thoughts. It’s a continuous cycle that is hard to get out of

You ignore the content . If you are getting more than one thought , it means your mind is trying to get you caught up in the cycle and you’re doing good at avoiding it . You do nothing every time it comes in your head . Focus on studying . If it starts getting too intense , say I am having a intrusive thought . It becomes hard if you’re doing compulsions , such as ruminating . Which means checking if you’re still thinking about a thought or trying to reason it away . You will never win against your brain . You except the thoughts and do nothing . Don’t do this while studying , set aside time each day to practice viewing your thoughts as an observer . Each day set aside 10 minutes of not reacting to the intrusive thought and adding more time . Document your progress .

You are not your mind, your mind can think ANYTHING, you cannot control it, u can ignore it, just dont react or feel anxious when the thoughts come, they are just thoughts , not reality, the only control is with you, your body, not the mind

okay-I've been going to the gym for 20 some years. From the start I felt shy bcuz I'm not an athletic built guy. and even in school I felt inferior in sports. So I was never picked for the teams. I wanted to play but... I still am conscious about if the more macho dudes are thinking ill of me. This causes me to some degree to do a lighter workout. Or even to stay away from others there. advice?

This is very interesting way to look at it. Can intrusive thoughts be about oneself and not about other people? Are intrusive thoughts always about doing something in the future?
@anggiepw113 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be about yourself... read about ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) this is one of their techniques =)

Yes. How about intrusive thoughts that have to do with genetic disorders and being a twin and losing it early on in the womb.
