Thank you. I find it's also helpful during meditation to watch the so-called "positive" (actually meaning pleasurable?) thoughts come and go, without clinging to them either. It seems to exercise the same faculty that's able to release the so-called "negative" (actual meaning painful?) thoughts. This can make room for more cognitively accurate perception of what's going on inside and outside the self moment to moment. Trust in this process can develop into a habit. Consistent practice is key.

Yes, this is very helpful. Using the glass with water to explain cognitive fusion and defusion is very helpful because I can think of the image, which is easier to remember, and I can use this a trigger when thoughts come up. Labeling a thought is also very helpful. Very interesting to know about the history it all. Thank you! :)

Thank you for this clip with water glasses. It’s easier to understand especially for my son. I’m watching this for my 13 year old boy who’s had anxiety since he was 10. I feel like the motor to stir those negative thoughts is his survival instinct( he doesn’t think he can survive those negative thoughts and he gets annoyed and upset even though it’s not his business). I hope he finds a way to be able to think he can tolerate and stay in the moment without being stirred. 😢

This is so incredibly helpful- thank you. Your reference to CBT, Stoics and Buddhism really opened my eyes. The answer is there, implementing it maybe more difficult but there is a way! Thank you!

Excellent presentation! There's much wisdom in what you say! Yet some thoughts are automatic and difficult to let go of. Don't we need to process and come to terms with it?

Thanks so much for your kind words! Yes, there are different techniques to work with thoughts. But "distancing" from them is critical for all the other work. Automatic thoughts in particular!

Thank you for your helpful videos 🙏 About meditation: I think sitting in med. is a good start for beginers, but after a while try to observe our thoughts and feelings trough entire day is better...

No way, Barbara, you are in CT. Me too🥰😍🥰I always thought that you are maybe somewhere in England, I don't know why though🎉😅😊I wasn't too wrong though, you are in New England instead😉 I will be on the lookout to say hello if I ever see you🌹 I am trying to defuse my thoughts from yesterday, but it is only getting worse, with bad memories and bad experiences from the past added to the storm and the mix...

@@BarbaraHeffernanover the last few days I've noticed that just breathing is enough to take the edge of my anger so that I don't get too sucked in to negative thoughts and at least try to let them go

Hi I had a question that might be useful for a future video, How is ocd tied with anxiety and depression? I recently moved to a small town after living in much bigger cities my whole life. I was Completely fine then all of a sudden almost overnight I became depressed for the first time in my life I was beginning to feel anxious in my body all the time, I’m afraid that if I start ocd treatment i will become depressed again I feel stuck. On a positive note you have really helped me these past couple months thank you ❤❤

Nice video. Question - if negative core beliefs reside in the limbic system due to traumas, how can you modify them by using cognitive techniques that focus the thinking part of the brain (prefrontal cortex) vs the limbic system? Thanks

Hi: great question! By using visualization techniques, and focusing on the physical feelings. When we visualize it, our body is experiencing it in many ways! And then practicing new behaviors. I agree the focus on thoughts does not get us all the way there!

❤ I'm replacing it, with today's world and what I love today my beliefs in me my birds, walking family my home, I still find it hard to trust people but, on one hand I've got my heart on my sleeve, and the other closed off if someone does me wrong. I didn't know what to say, my mind is definitely changing in that. With a little help 💕 thank you I'm now following😇🤗🥰 A Jefferson fisher on KZbin. Anybody needs him he's free. He's helping me to communicate better, as I don't know how lol 😂
