100% spot on. Bates tried to say that he was in double play breakup mode. That he didn't realize the bunt didn't get laid down. Didn't fly. Runners always look over their shoulders in those situations to make sure ball didn't get popped up.

Yes it was a hard slide but come on you can go hard and still go straight into a base. Dunston had pivoted sideways Bates saw that and slid with his feet pointing towards 3rd base and even lifted them a bit for good measure. True hard baseball is one thing , I hate the way the rule is nowadays but this play was not text book or how it should be taught or played at any level. Now did Dunston have to explode like he did probably not this was pretty normal for the period thence why the rule change; problem now is there enforcing the rule wrong. Go Cubbies

Steve Stone said it best, Dunston was coming back from back surgery, so he felt like Bates slide was way off. Try that now after what Utley did and you will be called out. I think the slide was fair. I don't think he looked to see where the ball was. I think he thought it might have been hit. Granted he should have looked to see if it was a pop up, but I think he thought maybe it was fielded and they were going for the double play. I think Dunston was out of line.
