As for getting a "proper" diagnosis by my doctor: When I mentioned constipation (eliminating every 2-3 days, versus what was previously 1-2 times daily), his hypothesis? "You're getting older and your body is changing." So much for a "proper" diagnosis.

Colace and Miralax are both stool softeners, but they function differently: Colace works by surrounding water in stool to trap it, similar to a surfactant in hand soap, while Miralax is a laxative that draws water into the intestine through osmosis and propels stool forward. Colace is recommended as the initial option due to its softening action without pushing stool forward. If Colace alone isn't effective, Miralax can be tried as it softens stool and aids in propulsion. Taking both Colace and Miralax together isn't recommended as they work in different ways and combining them may lead to excessively loose stool without providing additional benefits. It's important to consult a doctor to ensure constipation or other gastrointestinal issues aren't indicative of a more serious underlying condition, as stool softeners can mask such problems. Developing a consistent routine with one stool softener is preferable for long-term management of constipation, as relying on multiple medications or supplements can become cumbersome and stressful.

All one may need is a tall , crisp , cold glass of Sunsweet prune juice and an all bran muffin like you may see plenty of in a coffee house tray after all the blueberry muffins are gone and you settle for a bran one, and in about 2 hours or less you'll be spraying the commode bowl and having an experience you wont soon forget . But better out of you than in you.

Thank you, Doctor. My 91-yo aunt is being given two senna(!) in the evening at her nursing facility. It is causing her distress and difficulty (explosive loose stool), and she naturally does not want to comply. I suggested a gentler approach: warm prune juice and/or colace and/or miralax, if needed. No response yet from the charge nurse. This video is a blessing. Thank you!

I have chronic constipation. When I broke my leg, one of the doctors (I don't even know if he was a GI), prescibed Senna. I was suppose to take it every day but it was way too strong! I would cut the tablet in 1/2 & take it when needed. Dr. Chung, it's good to know to not take Senna long term.

I use regularly resistent starch as stool softener and it works amazingly well. I have done that for years with great success. I buy Deep Frozen Potato Wedges and keep them in my freezer. I take a full cup of it every morning and place it on a plate and throw some cheese on it. Add a couple of meatballs for more taste. Put it in a microwave oven and after a minute or two it´s ready to be eaten.

One well-known KZbin “natural medicine” doctor says very emphatically no one should ever use Colace or Miralax or any other laxative because they “dehydrate your colon.” Apparently, that is a very bad thing? I’d like to know how you’d respond to that advice. He is a keto/carnivore diet advocate. I never experienced constipation in my entire life until I tried the keto diet.

Is magnesium as safe as Miralax? When I tried Miralax, it caused a bit of water retention in my legs which made me nervous for the kidneys. Plus, I took 2 capfuls the first day, and 3 the second, and nothing happened,😯 so I gave up, not daring to try more. Thanks SO much for your videos!

Interesting topic I can see because of the comments around mine! (😮Miralax generally bloats my tummy even after it does it’s job…..maybe I’ll try the Colace instead.) In the end, I think the real answer is finding the correct foods for YOUR body….identifying allergies or intolerances (like gluten, junk foods, wheat, dairy, etc.) Folks just want easy answers, pills, medications, etc. and to EAT whatever tastes good! I’m guilty too. 😮 AND, then there is the whole topic of stress and how we handle it…….am I right…… 🤣 Thanks as always. 💃 🙂

Hi Doc. Have you researched randomized controlled trials for Colace and for Miralax? Trials have shown Colace has no real effect on softening stool or constipation. Whereas Miralax has proven very effective in trials. I personally also went to Colace after long time use of Miralax and have immediately started having much harder stools and got another fissure. Miralax on the other hand helped me get consistently soft stools, by God's grace. Interested in your thoughts of the randomized controlled trials of Colace showing no real benefits.

Fascinating. Kaiser diagnosed me with same thing in 2021 but then redacted it. Be careful. I still have my appendix. Went to emergency because of right side pain. Had second CT in 6 weeks which did show it was 20% bigger. Surgeon said “ I could take out your appendix but I might be taking out a healthy one”. I have severe constipation and bloating. I’m hoping as well to keep this all at bay. Which is why we are all here.

I did this once - got 2 prescriptions from different doctors - my MD over phone said miralax, then I needed to go to walk in I saw who said I could take them together. Sounded like he gave me really bad advice based on this video. Thankfully got local family physician. It was hell absolute hell soft but nasty rough ragged thin/small-ish difficult to pass BMs lots of viceral pain over a week. I don't know if I'd ever take any of these alone again certainly not together. But maybe alone if I needed to... Colase/ducoset alone might have been okay based on this conversation.

Thanks again for all the information. I’ve tried colace, not much help. Myralax works much better. I also take magnesium citrate. But this is what I found online…. Stool softeners such as docusate (Colace, Surfak, generic versions) are safe. However, when put to scientific testing in controlled clinical trials, they are no better at relieving constipation than a placebo. -Chicago Health

I used to be strict on the research as well. But, when you actually spend the time to listen to patients and build your own experience repertoire, you'll find that studies all have limitations. Hence why the best doctors see medicine as an art, not a protocol.

Hi doc, thank you so much for this video, I had asked this question about long term use in one of your old videos and now you made this one, love it! My concern is that any time I look up long term use of these products I get always the same result "Overuse and prolonged use: Overusing or using docusate sodium for long periods of time may cause your bowels to become dependent on the medication. Unless recommended by your doctor, do not use this medication for longer than one week." I'll like to use them but I don't want to become dependent, I recently had a colonoscopy because I'm under the age for my first check up and the results came back clear, no problems at all and my doctor recommended to take the next one in 10 years, but I have constipation and very bad hemorrhoids, I had great results taking 2 pills of 400mg each of magnesium citrate daily and go to the restroom great, but as soon as I forget to take the pills I get constipated again. So docusate sodium is safe long time then?
