It seems VERY clear to me that he started saying that innocently, only to visibly relate it to the brewing rumours at the point where he stumbles with his words. From there, he just seems to try to act normal and finish the sentence, but you can clearly read the awkwardness in retrospect. Most humans aren't badly written villains. People very rarely allude to their dark secrets in public appearances.
