I have a feeling that if this guy was on Kimmel, the first thing he would ask him would be something along the lines of "Wow! And you did all this from your moms basement?", like the guy doesn't have a real job. It's nice to see that Stephen respects the amount of works that these guys have to put in, in order to build something that they care about and provide entertainment for people.

Looking back from now, when the game is a lot better than the first trailers even showed, I feel bad for Sean being thrown into all that press. He's said he's a developer not a PR guy, and most of us would have done worse when put into all that pressure. He didn't want to underplay it and make it seem bad so he went with the expectations. Look at many trailers and you'll see most people saying "so (insert significant thing) can happen or it works like (insert game mechanic) and it related to that so he said yes. I have to admit that I may get back into gaming just so I can give this game a shot. Really cool
@martinaee9 жыл бұрын
+Mikhail Kalashnikov It's cool, but I can't shake the feeling that it's going to be the next Spore. Kind of cool, but without real depth after a while. People are freaking out because they have a pretty cool procedural system in place, but is it going to have an actual in depth story or true interaction system between players to keep people interested for a long time? And is it just procedural plants/animals? What about intelligent life and civilizations. Also I kind of am annoyed how Sean just says "we use math" every time he speaks about this game instead of trying to actually explain the systems they used a bit.
@z-beeblebrox9 жыл бұрын
+martinaee Well, no matter how good it is, players will inevitably break it down to its component parts, which will make it less interesting eventually. But purely on the level of being able to fly around a procedurally generated galaxy - that seems fun enough in itself to support the game even after that happens
@johnjacob20949 жыл бұрын
+martinaee Given the time constraints and the specific audience- more a mix of the mainstream viewer than a more gamer-centric one, let alone a programmer/developer-centric one- they probably weren't looking to bog things down in technical bits, especially given there is actually a video that goes into more detail behind the scenes for those systems; kzbin.info/www/bejne/nl7Ompl5jrmid7c Although keep in mind, it is half an hour long, 'maths' is brought up more than once, (and to be fair, it IS a unified series of procedural algorithms, and like math, the same input will always result in the same output,) and even though it does go into MORE detail, there will still inevitably be questions left unanswered. Least there was for me. x3
@martinaee9 жыл бұрын
I think the buzzword the creator here uses a lot is procedural rather than ever saying randomly generated. I get there is a difference, but it in practice IS random if it never exists anyway until you get there. I guess that doesn't matter, but the truth will be how long will it actually be fun to see world after world of randomly generated stuff (in essence). I'm wondering what kind of other actual goals will be in the game if any.z beeblebrox
@Youremyproblem9 жыл бұрын
+martinaee What do you think random means? Random doesn't at all mean something that is generated by your presence. The thing that is generated is actually 100% set in stone, not a random thing at all, it's actually the complete opposite of random generation, it's deterministic generation.

I don't understand why people are so hyper-focused on multiplayer when they've stated over and over again that this is supposed to be a single player experience. I would imagine they wanted it to be so you could come across other players, probably had some issues getting it to work how they wanted in the game, so just decided to put it in in a patch down the road, not realizing that the internet is the internet and that people would be insistent on trying to find each other despite it not being a focus point of the game. People want this to be an MMO or multiplayer game or something, but it's just not. Let it go.

@RCmies9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah but there is actually depth into this game. There's lots of gameplay that you can do with upgrading your ship, solving the mystery of the universe, discovering some right odd stuff near the center of the galaxy etc etc. The thing is, they don't want to show a lot of stuff, because the game is about exploration and they don't want to spoil it. If you watched the first trailer we saw these huge 1 mile long sandworms on one planet. That was their first trailer, to catch many people's attention. Now that they have that attention, they don't need to convince that many people anymore. But yeah I'd play this game even if it was just that one solar system!

I understand now how the 'univserse' in this game is made. Its generated on each system (PC, PS4) then its just a database with the names or what people name the planets/flora/fuana. There will NEVER be player to player contact.
@koberko8 жыл бұрын
And still are? Because apparently people have meet again at same place at same time, and nobody haven't seen anybody... so I'll say they are full of shit in regards to "multiplayer" (and bunch of other stuff). They probably didn't bother with multiplayer at all, since they believed that chance of players finding each other is so small... And if they would find each other, they can always blame it on "servers". Also, if game has multiplayer, why there is no data transfer from game to that "server"? When I play it, my network activity is zero. Even if it has some rudimental multiplayer, occasional synchronization with server should occur... But here; nothing....

Dude, aside from the amazing game being talked about, Stephen Colbert just earned a lot of kudos. Every time you see any other TV host interview a video game designer they tend to be act superior than them. But Stephen was just as much in awe as the audience, me, and probably even Sean. He completely humbled himself before him which was warming to see.
@MythicSuns2 жыл бұрын
Sadly the game had a rocky launch partly caused by Sean Murray being a bit of a lousy PR guy and, as much as I hate to admit it, lying about some crucial elements of the game, but thankfully most of the stuff he showed in this interview has pretty much been there from day one (though for whatever reason they switched back to using the actual periodic table rather than the fictional one) and, in its current state, No Man's Sky is now 100x better than what was shown in this interview. I'm glad Stephen took an interest in this game and I'm glad it mostly worked out well, but I think indie devs should take this as a cue to not treat a beta as a final build and maybe even to consider their situation carefully before signing any contracts that could be used to push them into releasing a game before it's fit to play. People accused Sean of being a snake oil salesman when the game was launched but ignored the fact that Hello Games was in no financial position to get away with pulling an EA by selling a broken game and laughing their way to the bank, such a strategy would mess them up in the long run so there had to be more to it. Sadly there was a little bit of truth to this as a lot of people figured out that Sean was using demo builds of the game that were designed to make it look more capable than the release build which is a pretty ballsy move for a small company, I think this combined with their studio getting hit by a flood and destroying a lot of the important game files and their backups didn't help matters much. My best guess is that they were contractually obligated to launch the game within a certain timeframe and decided to basically create a build they felt would be good enough to buy them the time they needed to release some super patches to gradually fix it over time. The game is still missing some crucial things that Sean promised (such as the ability to seamlessly travel between systems using just the pulse drive) but again, I'm still willing to bet that a lot of those things will either be added via some huge update or, if necessary, they might release a sequel to the game. Short version: the launch went about as badly as any game launch could go for a small indie team but they've done a pretty impressive job fixing the game up to a standard that's more decent even if it doesn't quite reach the ridiculously high bar that Sean set during his many interviews. I'm hoping the other things he promised that honestly seem impossible on the release build of No Man's Sky will manifest in some kind of sequel that can run on a better optimised game engine.

I would disagree, but Stephen saying "So this game comes out soon and that's why you're on my show right?" seemed a bit of a tip off, kinda hoping Stephen knows something we don't and that wasn't just a simple joke. I mean, of all the devs that Stephen could have had, it doesn't make sense to pick Hello Games if No Mans Sky WASNT out for a long while, so I think a hard launch is exactly what's gonna happen, the only question is when.
@lotsofotherstuff9 жыл бұрын
+carcrash2000 They were on the show to promote that they will do a presentation of the game at the New Yorker festival. So it probably had nothing to do with announcing a release date.
@elizamt19949 жыл бұрын
+lotsofotherstuff so let me get this straight, they were on a show that gets broadcast internationally, to promote an appearance at some random NY exclusive event? Yeah either they reveal the release date at the event today or that'd render it pointless, most people interested want to see something new shown and the release date would be it.
@lotsofotherstuff9 жыл бұрын
carcrash2000 Why not? When bands go on shows they promote the fact that they are doing shows in the local area (plus that they have released a album). If you are playing this game because you are excited about seeing another player online in a large virtual universe, *there are lot's of other games for that*. This game is about *you*, one person, exploring this incredibly beautifully weird universe with 18 quintillion planets and the paths that take you ultimately to the 'center of the universe'. This game is NOT *supposed to be* multiplayer. Why the FUCK do people keep trying to stick a square peg in a round hole, and then bitch about how it doesn't work or fit their expectations?? This game is for people who like to explore for the sake of exploring, collect for the sake understanding more of the game, solve puzzles to unlock new equipment, engage *AI based* space pirates and sentinels, etc. If you want to play a MOBA, go play one! Want to play a MMO and group up with other No Man's Sky players to take out the elite sentinels on that one planet (out of 18,000,000,000,000,000,000) ?? Forget it. Not going to happen. Go play Destiny - Taken King. Let the rest of us wander through the NMS universe in awe of what the Hello Games team has created. I, for one, love the damned game. If I'm the only one who appreciates it, I don't give a shit... It's great, and I recommend it wholeheartedly for PS4.

@0nlinePrOo8 жыл бұрын
How much were you paid for that comment vaprex ? I finished the game yesterday and I can say after experiencing everything it has to offer. It is garbage. It is not about you, you are not a lone explorer. Every single planet is clustered in the same old boring space stations that are all 5 feet away from eachother destroying your immersion if you had one to begin with, how do people still think that procedurally generated is something good, it is not, it looks like shit and feels empty. The planets feel cold, small, ugly and boring, you will stop exploring after your fifth planet or so because there is 0 reward and excitement to gain from doing that. Every system you goes to looks and feels the same, because they are. But the biggest problem in this game by far that I haven't seen a reviewer or someone tackle yet ( probably because not many people have finished it yet ) is the horrible progression. You are forced to do the main story aka "I submit to you my god" x10 with no explaination what is going on to get the necessary items to move forward ( recipes, atlas pass, ability to track black holes ) after that you get credits and warp fuel thrown at you like its dirt. The game delivered nothing but lies, there was a thread on reddit about what it promised and lied about and it was fcking huge. It got deleted just like the account of the person who posted it after reaching the front page. this is propaganda level of fanboyism we are seeing with this game. Pathetic www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4y4i3a/wheres_the_nms_we_were_sold_on_front_page/ www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4y046e/wheres_the_nms_we_were_sold_on_heres_a_big_list/

Oh, and another thing? I've seen enough to believe that the features that are not in the final game are just not fully developed yet. Sure, they shouldn't have shown them off in the trailers, but with there being "deactivated" portal monuments, and other things, I'm pretty convinced that all those things will one day be in the game. They just need more time to develop them, that's all.

Yeah, Fallon played Goldeneye 64 with Brosnan, and Punch Out! with Mike Tyson.

+mipmipmipmipmip not as disappointed honestly. I'm content with the game, helps me relax and sleep after a long night of work. However I feel for those who aren't happy with it.

You didn't use the joke correctly. Normally when someone says “this aged well” it is viewed as sarcasm. Especially when you put a laughing emoji after it.

Takes hundreds on game developers to make a shitty game Takes about ten developers to make the biggest game ever made

Every Legendary game has been made like that,games like Half-Life,Doom,Unreal Tournament etc..all classic games that revolutionized the gaming industry were made by a small team of very talented & innovative people. I really hope this game also revolutionize the gaming industry for the future of gaming.

Minecraft Not kidding, trash talk all you want, but saying that minecraft hasn't caused a revolution on the gaming world (and outside) it's to be retarded. Hate the game, but don't deny it's relevance

This game came out hot garbage, with that being said, you turned it 100% around and did the impossible. Thank you for being an example to developers today.

This Universe is so amazingly big, that even Colbert lost words for two seconds and was just astound by this.
