If you want to know what to call people from Latin America, you should ask people from Latin America. Personally, I believe that the propper term should be "Latin American". Why? Because people from the US like to forget that "America" is an ENTIRE CONTINENT, and not just one country.

This is a subtle point that makes the whole issue even more insulting. I really don't know where it started, but I can't help but think that the people who are pushing the word seem to think that Hispanic cultures are too misogynistic to come up with a new word. To them, the simple fact that Latino is also the male form proves that the culture is anti-woman/anti-queer. It is truly ironic that it is predominately used by folks who aim to be open and inclusive, when it's usage and promotion is a throwback to Colonial attitudes that the cultures that use the term have it wrong, and are not as "civilized" and "modern". I believe they mean well, but sometimes you just have to take the L. I'm as lily white as it comes, so I don't have any skin in the game - I'll call anyone by whatever they want. I live in a city that is about 1/3 Hispanic, and have yet to meet someone who prefers Latinx.

No true Spanish speaker would come up with that nonsense, because we already know "Latino" is gender neutral when talking about men and women as a group. Spanish has a lot of subtleties that don't translate to English or an exact translation doesn't mean what you said. Also the "x" makes it unpronounceable in Spanish, it has a soft "h" sound. The fact it's pronounced with a hard "x" means it was devised by some English speaker who had no real grasp of Spanish. Here is a little way to understand how ridiculous it sounds to Spanish ears. Take a few words that end with an "O", like Ohio, zoo, hello, do, go, potato... now instead of the o, say the words like they end in "H" instead.... Sounds really damn stupid huh? So what makes you think a people who use o to end half of its nouns, in a well established language, would suddenly decide to trash the whole language to add a totally incompatible sound?

I believe that the whole thing is ridiculous, the x wasn't intent to be pronounce, it was more like a spelling neutrality, the pronunciation was change for an E, which is also dumb because we would end up reinventing the french language. Hand to God, his exact quote... the balls on the guy burned that quote in to my brain. I fully support inclusivity, but I really dislike 'latinx' as a word. For one thing, the letter 'x' doesn't belong there unless it rhymes with 'jinx.' This isn't an Instagram username or a boy band. But what really bothers me is that there is no way to properly pronounce the word in the Spanish language, so it alienates the very people it aims to describe. If you want a gender-neutral term that is actually inclusive, why not use 'latine?' I have lost count of how many people think Hispanic / Latino means Mexican and only Mexican. Including from Hispanic people. And people use LatinX which sucks. And ChicanX which is somehow worse. As an Argentinian I can say we pretty much prefer to be called by the country we actually were born or live in, but I guess teaching the people from the US the difference between Argentina and Mexico seems to be impossible. The truth there is little in common, and I even struggle sometimes to understand what they say. I assure you you know more of mexican culture in the US than in Argentina. It's funny but they do not seem to do this BS when it comes to Europe. They seem to be able to differentiate a Frenchman from an englishman or german, and they don't throw them in the same bag (except the most illiterate).

Technically accurate: Hispanic: person from a derivative of Hispania: what the Iberian peninsula (Spain/Portugal) was called when the Romans took it. Race doesn’t matter. Latin: person from a derivative of a country that speaks a derivative of Latin (Spain / Portugal / Italy / France / Romania). Race doesn’t matter. All Hispanics are Latino, but not all Latinos are Hispanic. Most people: Hispanic / Latin : Mexican. What about Spaniards or Cubans, etc? European Mexicans and island Mexican from other Mexican countries. Where they speak Mexican. Not all South Americans are Latino (Guyana and Surinam). If you drew a Venn diagram, the Hispanic circle would NOT be completely inside the Latino circle, but rather both would largely intercept except for a small portion of each that is not part of the other. So Hispanic was a derogatory term used by Spaniards, to single out the mulatos born there, so it's associated with a slavery term, when the form asks what my race is, I fill in other and write human, now this means by US policy that the person taking the form can just use their judgment and choose for you in that case. Several points to add: 1. Only Canadians and US people are told that "America" is their region and the rest is South America. From Mexico to Argentina, America is a WHOLE continent from Alaska to Patagonia, divided in 3 different political regions (not geographically) North (Ca-US-Mx), Central (from Guatemala to Panama) and South America (from Colombia to Argentina). Also the Caribbean islands and minor islands as well. According to historians Kären Wigen and Martin W. Latin America includes "Latin" based languages, such as Portuguese, Spanish and French. Does not includes English-speaking countries like the Bahamas, Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago. 4. No Latin Americans outside the US call them Latinx... that an absurd "woke" word from Latinos and Latinas in US. 6. The Spanish official dictionary does not recommend to use the word "Americano" to refer to an US citizen. I am from Cumaná, Venezuela. My whole entire family comes from humble beginnings. We came to the United States of America seeking a better life. I am of mixed race and ethnicity. I am a mixture of French, Spaniards, Amerindian, and Africans. In common parlance, Latino means that your culture was influence by the region known to the Romans as Old Latium. Latin was the common vulgo of the Romans. The Latin language gave birth to Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian, and other romantic languages such as Catalan. Therefore, Spaniards are also Latinos just like the French, Portuguese, Italians, and Romanias, and Brazilians. In the Spanish speaking countries of the Americas, we can consider ourselves both Latinos and Hispanics. Being Hispanic means that our culture was influenced by the the culture and language that the Spaniards brought with them during their conquest of the Americas. We also need to go back in time when at one time in history the Iberian Peninsula was one region under one kingdom. Let’s not forget Equatorial Guinea where Spanish is one of the official languages. Let’s not forget Chavacano or Chabacano people of Philippines. This particular group of people speak a Spanish-based creole language. Furthermore, let’s not forget the African countries were Portuguese French are also spoken. Being Latino or Hispanic is not a race; it’s just being part of a large group with a variety and ethnic backgrounds. We are black, white, brown, mestizos, zambos, mulatos, indigenous people. Unfortunately, here in the United States of America we are always being categorized and cataloged into groups. Growing up in Venezuela nobody ever asked me about my race or ethnicity. All I knew was that I was from Venezuela, but in particular for the City of Cumaná. It is here in the United States of America where political correctness, which as time goes on it becomes a euphemism, tends to invent new words such as Latinx. This in turn creates more divisions among people. I am a member of the human race. The greatest privilege I have is to be part of this amazing and insanely crazy world. The greatest privilege I also have is to be a citizen of this United States of America. I know it is not perfect; however, I love this country. I don’t have a sense of entitlement. I mean we could use "averiguemos" (let's find out), but the tone of the show is informal and casual, and in real life you are far more like to hear "mira". That's both because it's easy and because it's an informal command, so "take a look" rather than "let's have a look". You're right that technically it's not correct, but "mira" is probably what you'll hear in normal conversation. Now, if it were proper news and there's an anchor formally talking about serious whatever, then you're absolutely right that "mira" would be dead wrong. I find it hilarious that directly after stating Spaniards are not Latinos you called Maria your latinx from Barcelona 🤣🤣. I always thought Latinos were those who spoke languages that came from a latin origen, i.e. Spanish, French, Romanian, Italian, Portuguese etc. And Hispanics are those who speak only Spanish. Fun fact, in Spain there are 4 oficial languages so "Spanish" as the rest of the world knows it is actually Castilian, because the other 3 languages: Catalán, Galician and Basque are also 'Spanish' languages (because they're from Spain).

@@maizdulce3 First of all it was a joke because of the history of the region and because la ETA está tranquila. I am latina and this is though in GREAT detail in Latin American schools, at least in Puerto Rico and I didn't even mention the region of Navarra and their dialect nor Andalusia nor Canary Islands since it's Castilian, albeit with it's own particular accent. The important part isn't the opinions of the country but of the people of the region and THEY don't consider themselves Spanish but Vascos. There's a lot of prejudice in Spain over the different regions. If someone calls you a gallego, their in fact dissing you and Puerto Rican accent is very close to Canary Islands Spanish and in Madrid they treat those from the Canary Islands like crap, firsthand account here.

Hispanic: Native spanish speaker. Latino/a: Native speaker of any romance language (that is, languages derived from Latin). Latin American: Native of an American country where speaking a romance language is the norm. The same way you can't shorten African American to just African (because that already means something distinctive), you can't shorten Latin American to Latino/a. Or well, you can't, but you'll be using the wrong term. Not throwing shade at the show's writers here, but the people in the comments arguing "but we are americans talking about America using american terms" are kinda disgusting. Technically accurate: Hispanic: person from a derivative of Hispania: what the Iberian peninsula (Spain/Portugal) was called when the Romans took it. Latino: flawless definition. You don't have to speak 'the language' at all to be Hispanic or Latino. All people inevitably alter language to their preference. Spanish speakers refuse to call me "Americano" because they use the 6 continent system unlike us with the 7 continent system and I got over that real quick. And my relatives use 'Chino' for kids (super weird). And lets not start on Germany / Alemania / Deutschland. And "Chinese food". And Jesus / jEsus / Joshua / Yehoshua.

The term "Latin America" "Latino/a" is actually NOT even Spanish in origin. The "Latin America" label, as a concept per se, was invented by the French in the early 1800s. The purpose was to foster closer ties between France and South America after the Napoleonic Wars. The French believed that by labelling the continent as a modern day extension of both the ROMAN EMPIRE (Latin) and Mediterranean culture, South Americans would integrate more easily into the Napoleonic fold. I personally DO NOT use the term...I prefer the non-Eurocentric general denomination of South America/ South American.

Someone mixed up the terms and we can't understand why here. Hispanic means that they have heritage from Spain. Latinos are all people from countries with a language that is Latin based. And this is where you get this wrong. For example, there are a lot of Latin countries in Europe, our language is Latin based (this is why Brasil for example is also a Latin country but it speaks Portuguese not Spanish), but only people from Spain can be Hispanic. I've heard a lot of South Americans and Americans calling us Hispanic/Spaniards but that is really wrong from a cultural and geographical point. We cannot be Spaniards because we're not from Spain, we're from a total different country, although we do speak a Latin language therefore we are Latinos. I'm not trying to have a war here, just trying to explain why some terms are really wrong and why they should be corrected. Calling us, European Latinos, all Spaniards, e saying that our country doesn't exist and that we all come from Spain. Can you understand why you're using the incorrect terms?

No. Your message isn't very clear. You keep talking about "our" and "us" but I have no idea where you're from. Also, in the US, Latino means someone from Latin America. That's the definition of the word. I have no idea what it means where you live, but this is an American show, talking about American terms for different ethnicities and cultures. Tons of languages have Latin roots, but that's immaterial. Also, I've NEVER EVER heard anyone called a Spaniard in general. It's not a term people use. They'd more likely say he's Spanish. Maybe if you're Portuguese people use the wrong word since I have to assume it would be easy to do if you're bad at geography or else it's just a slip of the tongue, but it's not a term used in the US at all, other than in the Princess Bride.

Latino is a person that speaks a romance language. Latin American is referred to people from America that speak a romance language. Hispanic people is people that speak spanish. Finally, people that is from America and speak Spanish is called Hispanoamerican.
