This was an excellent classic styled survival horror game. Too bad it did not sell well and the dev shut down. Maybe check out The Suffering 1&2 plus The Thing.

PlayStation 2 is the best generation for horror games. We got so many amazing games n so many games that will never released today's gaming generation. Cold Fear, Kuon, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Suffering, Manhunt, Obscure, Rule of Rose, Haunting Grounds, Darkwatch, Shellshock, Forbidden Siren or SIREN, Evil Dead, Alone in the do Dark etc so many amazing games released this amazing generation. We can only dream of a lineup like this on today's generation.

Fun fact: I played this game 1st b4 playing RE4. I finished this game but I've never finished RE4. When I 1st played Cold Fear I immediately compared it with Resident Evil: Dead Aim, since the game play takes place in a ship.

I was foaming at the mouth for more survival horror games back when this came out as I only had an original Xbox at the time. So I ended up playing this before RE4 and as much as I ended up loving that game I found the controls quite jarring and limited at first, after playing Cold Fear.

Gameplay for this was freaking fantastic. This gameplay was better than RE4. That movement in the ship n how u have to aim in that was fantastic touch. This give something chilling moment when enemy attacks.

Your'e wrong about it not being a RE4 clone, it clearly is, you may be onto something with revelations though, but this game did the whole being on a boat thing much better with having to steady yourself and hold onto railings and whatnot.

This was way into development before re4 was released. I actually say it probably looked at RE3.5 which was what 4 was originally going to be. Revelations is also not a clone of this, the ship setting does not make a game a clone, not to mention RE had already done a ship at this point in time. What makes the game different is that there are a tonne of optional rooms that don't matter at all, it also has an objective that isn't marked out all the time, causing lots of backtracking, getting lost or even the re1 broken door scenario where you have to find an alternate path. The games enemies kind of remind me of dead space the most before dead space was a thing. The game doesn't break ground but its well made and interesting enough to be a good experience.

@@logiclunacy606The thing with Cold Fear is that it uses elements from another horror game Darkworks wanted to develop after Infogrames neglected the sequels to "Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare" that Darkworks also had in mind (which is the reason why that game was open ended). Regardless Cold Fear was designed from the ground up to be a 3rd person shooter since they invested most of the time into forging the conditions for the boat movement, even to the point to produce hundreds of hand crafted animations for the movement of the characters. The fact that RE4 ended up using that approach after its development hell got resolved (which was kinda a norm with Capcom at the time, RE Zero is the worst offender) doomed Cold Fear in the public eyes to be a "clone" instead of what it actually was. For the record the exact same happened with Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, despite the game been based directly upon the original trilogy by Infogrames, just the fact that it had tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds made the public think, out of lack of knowledge, that Darkworks was copying RE. While in reality not only RE (according to Mikami himself) was based upon the original Alone in the Dark, but also, Darkworks presented a very good improvement over the classic background systems by adding the illusion of light, even in that (at the time) very obsolete hardware of the PS1.

i remember when i was a kid i bought this game not knowing that it's a horror genre, and after bloodrayne i stayed the fuck away from horror titles(i literally was getting nighmares and paranoia from that game as a kid), so that first hour.... oooh boy, that was tense. Cold Fear made me appreciate the horror genre to be honest. I loved that game. Still got the box with the dvd somewhere, with the rest discs and dvd's.

I don’t think Cold Fear is a clone of RE4, it’s a cool different game. Loved the Ghost Ship reference! Well, just saying, I don’t have a gamer computer, so most of the games I play are these ones (Silent Hill, Resident Evil, etc). Can anyone recommend me other games like this ones? What's funny about cold fear it has fixed the biggest issue with fixed angle games is that if you walk holding a direction while switching scenes if you hold that button you keep moving in the same direction so no need to stop and flip the input

This and Raw Danger are the reasons I pirated my PS2. Because I couldn't find them in my country. Cold Fear is truly amazing! Very few flaws aside, it is a masterpiece! Especially the atmosphere, the lighting and the visual effects (rain, drops on camera, waves, etc...)

This game was a underrated masterpiece. If Ubisoft wasn't well what they are today I would totally be on board with them remaking, remastering, or rebooting this game. But given the current state of Ubisoft I fine with just playing it on Steam.

Breaks my heart they are over. Saw them a few times when they would come to Australia. The best was with Let Live just before they broke up and Touché Amore. Seeing them with Knocked Loose would have been crazy! And I’m glad you dug the reference. Only a small amount of legends with great music taste have noticed it.

Good review. I think Cold Fear multiple times better than re4 that I haven't even bothered to complete. CF is what I've completed many times. Few things make it. Biggest one is the setting, huge water vessel setting is about as good as it can get as there's the actual sense of being there and there's no way to escape somehow. You're stranded there and really creates great atmosphere. Second one is the controls, they're imo pretty much perfect for this type of game. Third no ridiculous puzzles "put jewel in anus of gargoyle to get butterfly wings to put in door lock" style of shit. Fourth is the inventory management things that re games have. I just hate it and it ruins immersion imo. All in all, Cold Fear is vastly underrated and unfortunately really little known game. It's really shame.

So I remember you could actually move a lot quicker with the over the shoulder.. but it reset every time, I could be fucking wrong I haven't played this game in so many years I remember at one point Ubisoft had to send me at a modified exe file because they had no aftermarket supporter or anything like that because it's Ubisoft of course.. and I've pinned it to my desktop just letting me know at some point I'm going to replay this game cuz it really wasn't shitty, and I had the benefit of it being a legitimately decent game and also not being shitty it's like a double win for something LOL... That being said the movement was kind of shitty LOL at least coming from mouse keyboard situation having the twin stick aspect of it, I'd never seen that before with my spoiled mouse and keyboard ass so I was just sitting there just like mine fucked like why would you do this and then you know I got used to it, I'm not sure I would want to implement that in the game ever, but at the same time I don't think I would want to take it out cuz it was so it's kind of like when they didn't want to fuck with the remake of resident evil 1 it's like this is the thing even if it is going to fucking dumb like I actually get that and rarely do I ever agree with it.. But yeah yeah it was there was a reset or something like that on the movement speed and you could like re-speed up the character every time you and your gun or something, I could be wrong I could have just modded the file to do that I don't think I did though cuz honestly this is something I would have loved to have modded a lot of things on and it was not in any way an accessible game this is when it'll be so finally started getting a handle on releasing game so that you couldn't fuck with them.... Of course the irony being that I literally had to get a special exe from support to run it at all at one point I can't remember what that was it might have been right off the bat LOL . It's I'm really interested to know about it being released like just a couple months after resident evil 4, and every play console games so I didn't really pay attention to that but I've always heard that resident evil 4 is the original over the shoulder and I'm just kind of sitting there like well now I kind of want to know who came up with it first.. I mean yeah we've seen like fixed camera third person games like Max Payne what not but I can't remember specifically over the shoulder like over over the shoulder until this game or others, now now I want to know but I also don't want to go find out because I can only imagine how much of a fucking nightmare that would be with every fucking Nintendo fag screaming about how resident evil 4 is the best game ever and the only thing that really beats it is rather the wild and super Mario 64 double plus Skyrim re-release or whatever the fuck they keep whining about. Also yeah now I literally saw an aiming reticule the laser thing like on your gun that you were shooting the only one I don't think I saw it on was a shotgun and I I can't remember if it had one but I remember every gun pretty much having a laser even the AK.. I wonder if it was a PS2 resolution thing... Is one of the interesting things about that game there were certain graphical Fidelity things that were so fucking good, and then there was like the polygon count and the textures and I'm just sitting here kind of like when I first opened it I'm not sure if I got fucked or if I don't know what's happening and then I saw it on the PS2 just recently and realized what you guys had to put up with LOL and realize that I yeah like I might have gotten Ball kicked or or winged but yeah definitely didn't get fucked I don't know what it could have been.. I mean we all got fucked in the PC gaming community when you break it down as far as future games and the TechCrunch that happened prior to 2004 versus after and you know compare that exponentially to the crunch between 2008 and now and you you compare those differences and tell me we didn't get fucked.
