While travelling any distance by vehicle in the winter I always keep my Survival Blanket with me, never know when you might get stranded or stuck. Great great product. Cheers from Nova Scotia, Mike.

Thanks Mike, that is a great piece of gear, and I know it’s comforting to have one with you when traveling. I know once I got stranded driving across Wyoming, they closed I-80 in a blizzard. And I just kicked the seat back in my truck, wrapped up in my blanket and went to sleep till I was awakened by people getting underway again.

I have two regular PSS, one heavy duty PSS, the Beast, an Osni cloak and two Osni blankets (one regular and one heavy), one regular weight fleece liner and one heavyweight fleece liner. I have used them all in all weather conditions. My PSBL is still my favorite piece of kit. It is always in my Jeep, and I still use it hard more than the other items. Best item WI ever made!

Perry I love it as well for getting up at night to take a fast leak and no problem as with getting out of a sleeping bag. It works as good as you have explained. I have covered my head in 20 degree temperature while under a tarp without a moisture problem as well. I bought two blankets and love them, one for me and one for my wife.

Yes nothing beats a blanket for when you need to get up. Thanks for the report on your use of the blankets.

Lot's of good information. I'm hoping to get the blanket for my birthday this year. Let the not very subtle hinting begin!

Consider doing a Down filled sleep system vs. PSB side by side test for moisture. Down and Gore-Tex are barely breathable...most people buy them for packablity weight and are paranoid of condensation and suffocation by sleeping inside/covered up by their expensive sleep system. So many synthetic materials are great....right up until you need them the most...at bed time. Then those expensive materials become wet naps or campfire casualities. From your experience, a slightly humid micro environment is more comfortable than a freeze dried sandwich bag. Most of these camping videos -online- show people sleeping in their clothes....mummified stuff sacks. Your gear and materials promote a natural(at home) approach to sleeping in the elements. Thanks again.

Many people also use vapor barrier liners, which is like sleeping in a plastic bag. Down proof fabric is tight weave and usually calendared, which means barely breathable, that type of set up can be miserable to sleep in.

Regarding the clothing, I have used the blankets at 28 degrees F. I was only in shorts and a t-shirt and I was sweating. I was wondering if no clothes would be even better. The issue with this is getting up during the night to go to the bathroom. I was sweating. It would make it worse if you were sweating and had to get out not having clothes on. Great product! I have 3 of them. My experience is unless it’s below 20 degrees F, I would only use 2 blankets. Just my opinion.

mikecarlini66 actually no clothes on feels warmer and in a way is more comfortable. Sometimes clothing will trap moisture or bring in moisture due to being worn while working. I used to strip down when going to bed, but with all the experimenting and different things I do it’s too much hassle to get in and out of clothes. So for the most part I try to wear poly cotton and make sure everything is breathable.

Perry. Good info on your blanket. I want one of the XLT blankets real bad. Can they be used as a bivy bag?

Mark Hager yes they can, they were designed to be multifunctional. The original idea was to be used like a cowboy bedroll.

In a quick bug out with a temperature at 10f for 2 0r 3 nights, will your bag work?. Interesting

This is a tough question to answer because it is dependent on moisture level, personal cold tolerance, etc. Using the blanket by itself, I would say no (you'd be pushing the limits). However, with a good ground mat (or thick leaves or boughs for insulation) and proper clothing layers (polypropylene), it might be feasible. In a bug out situation, I would carry a thermarest ridgerest, zippered poncho liner, and a reflective windshield/sun shade in addition to the PSB I've slept with the PSBt(tall) blanket and a durable all-weather space blanket (no sleeping mat) in my underwear-only at 22f and I was okay. I wouldn't say I was very warm, but I was able to sleep and I wasn't shivering. 2 blankets would be a ideal plan for 10f weather. I would be toasty I think. I haven't been able to test the PSB though, since the lowest temp we've had has been 22f around here.

Perry, I am wondering how would the Blanket do in comparison to a top quilt, pro or cons either way or using them together, I have the hd poncho and am not sure with moisture driven out on the underside that the Hd poncho might retain that moisture when using the Hd poncho as a hammock in cold weather, if that makes sense to you, thanks for all the testing you do.

I do both ways at times, and I like both too. I'm working on a top quilt that will be made with APEX like our Osni Cloak, but thicker. Top quilts do work well. There is nothing like getting wrapped inside a blanket though, pretty awesome. I'm hoping to put up a video today where I show the blanket wrap (cocoon or pod) among other things. I haven't had any problem with moisture getting trapped under me in the poncho/hammock. It seems most of the moisture wants to go upwards.
