I have seen both videos on your cold frame and of the one’s on KZbin it is by far the neatest looking build. I have decided to build one like yours but will make mine half the size. I will include an automatic vent also. I live in the UK (Wales) and am interested in the two books you mentioned. I to would like to crop every season. As of yet I haven’t found a book here in the UK that deals with this. I’m in Zone 9 but our climate is not as cold as yours in the winter but a lot wetter and not as warm in the summer. Whether these books would be available here I’m not sure but Amazon has pretty much everything. Great videos by the way, and I’m glad I found your channel.

Thank you for your kind words. I am a very amateur carpenter and building the cold frame was ambitious for my skills, but it really wasn't hard. In fact it was very satisfying : ) I believe in building things quality the first time rather than needing to rebuild or constantly repair. So far this cold frame has performed as planned. I just need to improve my gardening skills lol. The books I mentioned will definitely work in your location. In fact, Elliot Coleman got many ideas from Holland and France where they have been growing in hot house for decades. He talks in detail about how this system operated in old Paris and it is really fascinating! Anyway, thanks again and I hope you enjoy your cold frame endeavors. Cheers!

Something you might want to try to provide winter heat and extra light in the winter are incandescent lights. String them along the frames to keep them off the plants. Also an old mountain trick down here is to put old quilts over the cold frame on cold night to help retain heat. Take them off during the day time hours. Another trick is to put a little candle under a clay pot. They give off more heat than you would think.

can u grow watermelon in your cold frame all through out winter??

It’s not nearly warm enough in Ohio to make that happen. We have so many gray days that it’s a struggle to even use solar powered fencing for our animals.

How is your cold frame crop doing? I’m very interested in doing this.

The cold frame is performing perfectly....however I didn't do my seeds properly and only had a bit of kale, arugula and spinach germinate. I think I planted the seeds too deep. What is growing is doing great! I may build another frame this summer because I can see that we will need more room for our family. Best wishes!
