In this episode we will be installing all the cold roof PIR insulation complete with a guide on how we deal with spot lights within the insulation.
All of the internal ceilings and the basement ceiling will have rock wool insulation installed meaning that we are ready for fitting plasterboard to all the walls and ceilings. The only walls left to do then will be the basement walls which will be done once the tanking is completed.

Its all about detailing when it comes to insulation. One small area without any insulation will undo all the good work of a large area with thick insulation.

Electrician (retired) here: When working on jobs like that my favourite part was coming back after plastering for the 2nd fix. The place always seemed pristine and tidy compared to the chaos of the 1st fix, and a damn sight closer to completion. My day was back in the 70's and I wasn't at all sorry to see the back of extensions, refurbishment and rewires and get into industrial work.

Looks like nice tight fitting panels using a table saw which is great to see. I have used a festool insulation saw which creates a lot less dust when used with a dust extractor. I am less convinced with tape on all the off cuts upstairs as I think that tape will peel off over time. Did you do the additional layer over the top upstairs? It looks to be a bit less of a vapour layer than downstairs but you may not have filimed the final finish.

Fantastic work on avoiding cold bridging. It really is important and it’s good to see. Don’t know if you’re planning on doing so, but you might want to tape the ceiling perimeter into the wall downstairs. Plaster won’t work as a vapour barrier at the wall/ceiling joint after a few years of seasonal contraction/expansion (get hairline cracks). You can see it happening in older properties by looking for discolouration of loft insulation at the heads of stud walls. Contega PV or Contega Solido (or similar) tapes will work nicely.
@mrabuilders6723
@mrabuilders6723 3 ай бұрын
It’s all got to be tanked and then another wall put in front of it. We will be putting a vapour barrier on the new stud wall as well. Thanks for the advice 👍🏻

@mrabuilders6723
@mrabuilders6723 3 ай бұрын
Thanks Peter. They were only temporary tacked on with some lath nails because we fix the boards up with 60mm dry wall screws. Just make sure you knock the nails well under the surface unless the plasterboard will sit on the nail head. 👍🏻

I've been told that you should never use expanding foam where wiring is. As it allegedly reacts with the plastic on the wires which could then result In a fire hazard?????

In order to maintain the vapor barrier in the pockets for the spot lights, you don't need to tape the vertical sides of the exposed foam too, where it is not covered? Just the horizontal surface is enough? Since the bricks and blocks are not water tight, and do allow some level of moisture to pass through them, do you find your fiberglass insulation has mold issues over time due to the moisture, or gets damp and loses its insulation efficiency? Just curious as we do this differently on our side of the pond.

Them masks aren't CE marked or approved products for European use so I wouldnt be using them lads. Only reference in technical documents is to EN14683 which are for the light weight surgical masks in hospitals for saliva & blood so not suitable for this type of work. To protect yourselves against dust particles you'll need EN143 masks & no need for a carbon layer. These masks are a gimmick for this application, BTW I'm a respiratory test lab manager so I know what I'm on about. I've followed your channel for ages so I wouldn't want any harm to come to you guys as Mr A's channel is brilliant 👍

Cold roofs don't work. That's why they are banned in Scotland.
@mrabuilders6723
@mrabuilders6723 3 ай бұрын
Does that mean that heights above ridges can be exceeded on flat roof dormers for loft conversions to allow for the insulation build up or does it simply mean that you can’t have a dormer if you can’t get the height below the ridge? That’s interesting to know. If I never had to do another cold roof it would be too many I detest them. 👍🏻
