I still have the Bushman large and mini from over 30 years ago. It's a total shame that the mini has not been made for many years . One of the best large game skinning knives ever made . The original pig skin sheaths are still the best . Thanks for your video and all the best.

Those stoppers were a great idea! One more mod I would do is get a tiny eye bolt screw and put it in the each stopper, glue it in also with E6800 tie a piece of duck decoy, braided fishing line, or other micro cord to them and wrap some of the micro cord on the handle under the grip tape. Gives you some cordage, a bit more cushion, and now you have lanyards on your stoppers so you don't lose them. Great video as always Brian!

I'm not anti baton. I've just never understood why people would use a knife for a job that a good axe will do 100 times more efficiently. I'm not throwing shade, just sharing my philosophy. Take it or leave it really. An axe can be thrown in a truck bed, slipped onto a backpack or ruck. Doesn't weigh much. And does plenty of jobs that a knife can't do. It's more durable too. At the end of the day, a job that will break or chip a good knife and leave you spending hours honing your edge, won't do crap to break an axe head. You can carry a knife on a belt and an axe on your pack. And then you need no other cutting tools whatsoever in your kit. And you aren't putting your only cutting tool at risk of failure or being dull when you need it because you're using it for jobs it wasn't designed for.

I have a Bushman Bowie. I sharpened the top of the blade so it was flatter for scraping the ferro rod. I added a Wilson racquet ball grip tape. Unfortunately the rubber dries out in a few years. So, I'm looking for another grip to replace it. I've seen someone on KZbin use a cork to plug both ends of the hollow handle. The knife is good but very light for chopping. The best feature is for making it into a Spear.
@charlescollier72175 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bryan. I'm kind of shocked that you've never checked this knife out before; it's right up the alley that your channel started out with - supremely functional, incredibly versatile, virtually indestructible, and dirt cheap. I honestly see it as the American answer to Mora - a do anything, go anywhere, cost next to nothing knife. My Bowie version is on my hip right now, as I'm about to go out in the garden, and it excels there.

I never understood the, "You're never going to find the perfect branch to baton with" argument. Probably not ... but it's a branch... which the woods are full of. It might not be perfect and conveniently laid out for you on the trail, but you can find a decent branch of good weight and process it into a usable tool. It isn't rocket science. I have three trees in my yard. I've made a suitable club from dead fall... in my yard. I'm confident someone could find something close enough in the damn woods.

I personally find calf to thigh sizes logs/branches to be the best. I just split the amount of wood off one half of the wood until I get rough handle shape the carve the rest off, boom. If I already have a log I can make one in about 2min🤷♂️ Silky makes good saws and fast logs.

I keep one in the truck with the med kit. It's a decent utility knife and at $20 +/- bucks if it's stolen I'll just replace it with the backup I have. ;) One item I saw a You Tuber put in the handle was an Eye Screw. The handle has a hole in it so if you do make it into a spear you can use the eye screw to secure it.

I have a bowie version mounted on a nice commercial broom handle to make a spear, and I have this version too with a bunch of mods: paracord wrapped the handle with the long end of an allen wrench under the wrap to make a finger guard, put heat shrink tube over the finger guard for comfort, made my own snap button strap for the sheath because its retention is not very good, dremeled a part of the spine to make it sharper for the ferro rod, and pushed a little bit of polyester stuffing down the sheath to keep the knife from rattling. :-) I should have used a rubber stopper with a hole down the middle to start my paracord wrap, but instead I tied a monkey's fist knot that wedges in the narrow end.

Good job. But never use the thin profile of the blade to rub the 'firesticks'. the temperature developed changes the characteristics of the tempering, and it will be more fragile. it is better to always use the back of the blade, the unsharpened part.
