The Cold Steel Hand and a Half sword has a sharp blade of 1050 high carbon steel. Its guard and pommel are of nickel silver and the grip is wrapped in supple black leather. Its scabbard has a core of wood and an outer layer of black leather with nickel silver fittings.
Though deemed a Hand and a Half sword, this sword has a grip length and handling characteristics that would be fitting for a longsword. The long grip gives the wielder plenty of leverage to maneuver the sword quickly and to strike decisively.

The sword looks good, it has nice proportions, and I'm pretty sure Blood and Iron have mentioned that it is excellent as a beginner's cutting sword Any chance you could review some "Seconds"? I'm curious about what the defects look like in person. You don't have to review every single second, I'd just like to see a couple examples of common issues

I recently seen a honshu broadsword that I'm interested in it's a similar style to this

Notice the screw protruding from the pommel. This is not peened, but screwed on. It will come loose with use. Also notice the scabbard has no stud on the side for a buckler. When he cuts the mat it rips instead of cuts and he basically just knocks it over. Therefore, you have a dull sword that you cannot wear on your side, with a handle that will come apart. Hardly, a battle worthy sword!

It's an awesome blade , but the scabbard should be better than that, maybe lined with something to help retain the sword in it because its ridiculously easy to let it slip out and dangerous you could cut yourself. I tried to modify mine by sticking felt around the entrance but its not fantastic.. should be fully lined with someghing...

I don't know about the proportion on the cold steel longswords, I mean I always find them quite ugly but i'm never able pin point why. what do you think of them?

It's the blade and the cross guard. Blade needs to be more tapered in profile, as it is it's a bit too wide at the front. Not much, and I wouldn't take it as con as such, but in general it throws off the look. Cross guard is too short for the handle length. As many people noted when talking about long swords, the cross guard has to be as long as the handle.

Coldsteel are choppers. They are made for people who wanna torment the blades. This makes them bulky.

@@jamesm1 blade on the longsword is thinner and longer as well. I prefer the MAA variant of the italian longsword, it's less bulky.

I think sword making went a step backwards when it went from these to officer sabers, if I was a military officer I’d just wield a long sword or hand and a half sword.

The thing is the importance of swords in war have already reduced alot by the time officer saber became one of the standard military swords. Also this type of sword is not related to the saber, saber has been a around the longest from medieval time to world war 1. The longsword/bastard sword was never the norm in 15th century, the arming sword + shield combo was. Then it later on evolved into sidesword to rapier and finally to smallsword when the popularity of firearms slowly raise bit by bit.

I prefer the original version of the cold steel hand and a half sword. This new version is just awful.

Dude! NEVER put your finger over the guard. Especially with this sword. There’s no ricasso so it’s a very good way to lose a finger. Plus it’s bad technique.
