Cold Steel SRK 3V and SRK-C 3V Knife Review

I like the color. Orange. So you can easily see it when you put it down. I don’t want to rely on a knife for bear defense.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone say 3v is prone to chipping. Either you have your facts wrong or you have some very badly heat treated steel. 3v is known for its toughness, which means it’s not prone to chipping. I’ve seen people cut nails,bolts and other things knives shouldn’t be used for even with cold steel’s 3v and yes it lost its edge slightly in that area but without chipping, or for that matter rolling either. 🙄

When it was sharpened, the edge could have been "burned" making it brittle. Until its resharpened a few times.

CPM 3V is known primarily for its toughness and has decent edge retention. The tradeoff is it’s not stainless. The chipping of the edge is not something this steel is prone to unless it wasn’t properly heat treated. This is the reason this steel is used on hard use fixed blades more than other type of knives. The edge can take abuse without chipping. The fact that it’s a powder metallurgy steel also aids in toughness as the grain structure of the steel is smaller and more uniform compared to ingot steel thereby reducing the vulnerability of cracks forming in the harder carbides within the steel matrix and spreading to an an actual fracture of the knife. I love the SRK's... but it is the issues of the Secure-Ex sheath that i cannot tolerate!! Why does Cold Steel never listen to their customers... Secure-Ex is Glass Filled Nylon and it DULLS any knife edge very fast when taking out and putting it into the sheath a few times!! Even a CPM 3v!! C'monnnnn COLD STEEL!!!! Change the material of the sheath to other non-abrasive materials....

I just received my SRK 3V from Midway a couple weeks ago & haven't been able to use it yet due to a hand injury. I ordered a custom leather sheath for it, due this week too!

CPM stands for Crucible Powder Metallurgy. It's my absolute favorite super-steel right now, and Cold Steel has been a favorite brand of mine in the past. I dont like the san-mai steel as it's more well suited to kitchen cutlery than utility purposes. Good videos.

Oh, Cold Steel collaborates with Temu 🙂 100 bucks for an SRK with a CPM 3V blade is a steal ! In Europe, the lowest price for the same knife is 170 euros (~177 USD). Like many, I love this knife. Out of the box, it's a marvel : good grip, the blade profile is as pretty as it is aggressive. Two negative points, not always the case but it can happen and that's what makes the price for CPM 3V in Europe too expensive : 1) the sheath can be poorly adjusted (this is not due to the grind, I have a SRK San Mai VG10, hollow grind, and the sheath provided with the knife is much too tight. You have to force it out of the sheath but also to put it back in...) 2) the handle can become loose if you use the SRK for batoning. If such a thing happens with a SRK SK5, we don't care because the price is so low. With a San Mai VG10 or a CPM 3V, it's more annoying. This is what makes me think that the SRK is rather intended for tactical use than survival use, despite the "Survival" in its name SRK. The swedge plays a big part in this opinion too : it's a real piercer. But despite these two potential weak points (these are mass-produced knives, not crafts) its look is timeless... And I would love to see European dealers take inspiration from MidwayUSA 👍 Thanks for this review !

More like "Going Down Swinging" option. ...but yeah, I don't see how a knife will "protect" you from a bear. You aren't going to come out of knife fight with a human unscathed. A knife fight with a bear is more about pissing it off enough, so it kills you faster, instead of slowly eating your guts.

CMP is strong, but.... Once it chips, its cracked and you will face more and more chipping. It is great for tools but as far as a knife, cutting edge its not the best. If you get in hand reach of a Bear, your dead... Good luck penetrating the Bear with a knife like that....
