Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

Sink the enemy merchants bro, it's free tonnage. The game simulates unrestricted submarine warfare and doesn't penalise you for sinking hostile-flagged merchantmen. In fact, it's pretty much the only way to achieve the higher-tier medals in a given campaign, since the tonnage requirements are so high that you'll essentially never reach them by only sinking warships.

I really enjoy the Cold Waters content. My only criticism is that it seems believable to utilize the wire to make general course adjustments and such, but it feels a little cheesy to me to visually guide a torpedo all the way into a target in a game that's supposed to be a a sub sim although a somewhat casual one.
@perotekku

I don't mind it, as it's just a video game, but it did sort of pull me out of immersion when he guided it in visually. Obviously frustrating when the wire guided torpedo misses, but I feel like in a real life situation if that had happened and they'd counter launched, the Captain would have cut the wires and relaunched.

Amazing to me how those titanium hull soviet subs were built. Lot of people thought it was impossible, but doable when the area the hull is being welded together in, is full of argon gas, while the welders are required to wear specialized suits that allow them to weld in areas of no ambient room gasses.

This takes me back… uh, close to 35 years, when I used to play Red Storm Rising on my Amiga (or maybe my C64, I forget, it’s been a while) - of course, being under the age of ten and with then undiagnosed ADHD I used to get super impatient and go active, ramp up to 30kts, volley off harpoons at the enemy invasion fleet and then reload with Mk48s to engage the sub escort on the way out, blasting active sonar and navigating a 688 class - or a Seawolf, after I completed a few missions - like she was a race car! :-) ETA: This seems very… easy, even compared to that old game (which wasn’t exactly hard, if as an 8 year old I could weave past a Soviet fleet with active sonar blaring) - the enemy submarines utterly fail to fire back or turn into the attacks, never try to knuckle the water, or use the layer… or do anything to break the wire which is the only way they’ll live vs. a surprise American attack. I gotta agree with some of the other comments that the visual terminal guidance is both immersion breaking and - afaik - somewhat unrealistic in it’s ability for you to ignore every noisemaker or evasion attempt in the terminal guidance phase.

First, another fine episode. Second, what bugs me about the game (not your playing) is the whole want to "control everything" lots of people have in these games, but I really don't get why your crew is so inept that they cannot quickly identify the targets for you (at least by default, and having to do it yourself as an option). You don't have to break out the compass and plotter to navigate, or go through the loading steps to load ordinance, or do anything to operate the reactor, but your Sonar Techs are apparently all too busy taking showers, twiddling their thumbs, or sleeping on the job to identify the targets or inform you why they cannot (i.e. moving too fast). Edit - the decision to not include a proximity exploders on the torpedoes (where appropriate) is also baffling.

Unless you want to spend 6-12hrs reading gages on the hour, every hour, no it is nothing like being aboars a real submarine. Other games by the same studio that utilise the same engine (battle of the atlantic and one or two others) also have identification and fire control solution mechanics except they have images instead of dressing it up with a visual frequency spectrum graph as a coat of paint over an existing feature, that's why it seems out of place- it IS out of place because it's a mechanic used for surface fleet target acquisition, target identification and fire control slapped onto submerged engagements. That might explain why it feels odd to you.

If there's anything gaming have thought me, it's that: When you're preparing torpedoes for an imminent launch, and you happen to find yourself feelin' a lil nappish, it's completely acceptable to just drop everything you're doing halfway through and instead go grab yourself some "well-deserved" shut-eye. Battlestations = "shower-, sleep- and thumb-twiddlin'"-time after all. Oh, and ultra quiet/silent running = perfect opportunity to pick up a broom and start sweeping the floor. well i think you got the numbers wrong, i mean the "detection-numbers" at 7:05 if his active number matches your passive number or is higher, then there is a chance that "ivan" can hear you. that´s what i know. maybe i am wrong, but i think not.^^

Assuming this is still DotMod, their NATO campaign is based on another realism mod. It has the soviets launch their best subs at the beginning and gradually wind down as they take losses.

Hmm, that Alpha was listed in the game with a max depth of 1312ft. Is that just the max for any boat in the game, i remember seeing the same number on other subs and this sound so shallow for an alpha, didn't they have something like 900 meter or more?

Pretty surprised to that it took two Mk. 48s for the one submarine. Sure it’s a really big sub, but so are the merchant ships and the like it can one-shot.

For someone who dont understand how naval/sub warfare works I have a stupid question: is the signature identifier in the game a thing that exist IRL? I'm guessing there are a lot of different variables that account into identifying a vessel correctly? If so, how do they acquire these signatures? Espionage?

Hello, I’m not really experienced, but according to a former us navy sonar operator (subbrief look him up) they follow the submarine after it leaves port and record the noise it makes. Also mostly sonar operators do have the screen but are supposed to recognise the contacts by sound alone.
@ashenmedia5816
@ashenmedia5816 2 жыл бұрын
In a way, yes. Those are called waterfall displays, they simulate various frequencies of noises made by a contact. Anything in the water makes a noise. Biologics, different engines, how fast they're moving, so on. If you go watch silent hunter videos, the hydrophone is a primitive version of passive sonar, you can tell what a contact is based on engine pitch, and how fast it is by how often it 'chuffs'. Passive sonar takes in those noises on a much more advanced level, breaks them down into different frequencies, and then by applying those frequencies to noises in the database, you can try and identify what it is exactly that you're listening to. Once you have that, you can track them on the same waterfall display via relative bearing and where the contact moves on the display. For the most in depth unclassified explanation, I recommend this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6LUkoypbLGdoq8&ab_channel=SmarterEveryDay Goes into it with great detail and explains in simple terms. As for how they acquire those signatures, militaries are constantly listening in the ocean, but I'm sure there's a lot of classified details I can't discuss.
