I picked up this Colman Powermate Pulse 1850 recently. The story was it was surging when last run over a year ago. Watch as I clean out the carburetor and replace several tune-up items including, fuel lines, fuel filter, and the recoil rope. May also apply to the Coleman Powermate Sport and Coleman Powermate 1850 Max Series generators.
I use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner www.harborfrei...

Those are good generators. I bought one brand new on clearance at Wal Mart back around 2003 for $140. I use it for racing where we need power in the pits. Then friends have borrowed it for when the power goes out. A few things I have found: 1. the fuel shutoff failed about 6 months down the road (it came apart and drained the gas all over my trailer). I put in a splice and it's that way today. No filter, no shutoff. 2. It fell over in the trailer and all of the oil ran out of the crank vent about 15 years ago. A crew guy never told me or even checked the oil. It ran for 2 hours and then slowed down then died. I thought it was toast. A week later I filled it with oil and it fired back up. I did a few oil changes and it's still running well. 3. Had to adjust the governor a few times initially because it was running too slow and only around 90V. 4. Every trim screw shook out of it so I replaced them with what I had sitting around. 5. The circuit breaker nut fell off and it fell inside. Removed the cover and put a new nut on it. Found out something you might want to look at. The generator shaft goes into that plastic housing and has a needle bearing. I suggest removing the cover, cleaning the bearing and then regreasing it. I found out from a friend that the bearing seized on his and the whole generator became junk. Honestly, it has tons of hours on it and for the last 10 years, just oil changes, an air filter and spark plug is all I have done.

I still have one of these purchased new in 1987, or 88. Still runs and works great. Heavy as hell compared to modern units of similar output, but newer ones likely won't last for 30+ years.

Excellent vid James. A comment that might help in the future. I own and have worked on many of these generators (and others). Buy a paint pen and mark, on the generator, important info. Generator manufacture, model number, plug type (manufacture, gap), oil type (amount, grade) and when changed, etc. On the plastic cover above the gas value, mark the "Open and Closed" position for the value. This helpful for the older eyes. As you have no doubt seen, generators have a habit of losing their original stickers over time. And ALL of the generators I have worked on, NEVER have owners manual. Thanks for taking the time to help folks out...

Lol. I thought every small engine mechanic kept a few 5861s (Rj19LM , J19lm, etc) around. They use those plugs in everything. That's the one item I buy on a commercial scale. I get caught with my pants down every time I don't have some extras laying around. I keep one or two of those Briggs air filters around too. I have one sitting in my bedroom floor right now. It's amazing how much my hobby has consumed me. I will have 3 riding mowers, 2 push mowers, a tiller, and a blower to sell when Spring comes around. All but one are revivals.At least this one pays off, lol.

I picked up a second Coleman 1750 unit that had little to next to no compression (it needs a valve job. The whole thing is, one has to remove almost (if not), half of everything to do the job at hand so you can get good excessto the valves and piston area. I am taking my time at this job, as I have other things needing taking care of before working on this unit, so I am doing the job bit by bit when I get the time to do so. Compression pressure was leaking through the valve area on the power stroke. Last night I worked on it late into the night, and redid the valve seats (lapped them), and reset the valve clearances, and re torqued down the head. We now have good useable compression again. It did run and make power before I opened it up to get a higher rate of compression but was very hard to start. It's been cleaned up all over, and fresh oil added, so now it's a matter of putting everything back together properly and firing it up in the next couple of days, when I get another chance of working on it Should run a whole lot better now. Compression is right up to par. Not a bad buy for $30.

not that hard to get tank off. Take the cover , just loosen all bolts on plate, just did it, where receptacle is (grease bearing and clean and tighten electrical connections while your there. Take tank off and absolutely replace the grommet on tank (Stens 125-335, Amazon) , $4, the weak link), yes new fuel line, easy to get starter recoil off then. Clean everything and reassemble. couple hours parts $20 , use no alcohol fuel for all small engines BTW

I have an earlier model, 1750. Still works great, I have over 800 hours on the engine. I used reg oil and it would shut down aprox every 40 hrs of use. When I changed to full synthetic, I get on avg an extra 8 hours of run before it would auto shut down via the oil sensor. If I remember, it is a Kawasaki engine.

I just was given a 1750, hasn't been run in at least ten years. It wants to run but won't stay running. I've narrowed it down to the carburetor. Paying someone to fix it if possible. Of course if it needs any parts then it's a boat anchor. I won't spend anything really on it when I can just get a newer one.

@@jcondon1 yep this one is reading at 2.5 . Backstory for others. I got it work and producing power at 128v 68hz so I was trying to slow the engine down. In conclusion in one of your videos you say “be very careful with the governor. It will wreck an engine quickly” So true. Anyway the engine seems fine I moved the spring back and messed with the metal bracket the spring connects to to loosen the spring some more. I guess that’s what I should have done I; the first place?? But I think I ruined the generator. I’ll take the generator apart and see what I see. @jcondon1
@jcondon1 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if that uses a CDI or not. If a traditional ignition coil then there should be one kill wire connected to it. Remove that wire and test for spark. If you get spark back then test the off switch and also bypass the low oil module to figure out where the coil is being grounded. If no spark then probably a bad coil. Otherwise it might use a CDI and also have a pulse generator which could be bad of the CDI itself.

i got this same generator when it was going to the scrap yard. i heard it was surging so it was put outside. when i got it the engine was siezed. i just soaked the cylinder with oil and used an impact on the fly wheel now it's a very powerful generator but it still surges with no choke. i cleaned the carb lots of times and still nothing. also the front cover was broken i made a bracket but it looks bad. do you know where i can find a front cover?

The parts are discontinued. Your best bet would be eBay or locate another broken generator with a good cover.

J Miller at a minimum close the fuel valve and run the engine until it stalls. Gas should be changed out every year and treated with stabilizer.

What is the engine in these? It looks like a Briggs & Stratton. Wanting to add propane capability to mine and need model and all to order the correct kit.

It is an Briggs and Stratton. Was not able to read the engine number. The generator frame was blocking it. The engine number is usually on the blower housing.

Also people if you're wanting a propane generator or a dual fuel propane and gasoline generator. For easy starting make sure you get the propane purge button on the one-way regulator. if not it can be a monster to start. I know I have two different factory dual fuel generators. I won't mention the name of the generators but they're all about the same harder to start if they don't have this manual propane Purge button on them. Another tip when starting a generator like this without that manual push button propane Purge button is to let the generator sit with the propane fuel going to it maybe 10 minutes or more before starting it. And do just what the instructions say to do helps. My hutch mountain tri fuel kit on propane works excellent and is so easy to start up on my 2200 watt inverter Honda generator. My other 700-900 watt Baja generator, propane fuel only generator has that nice manual propane purge button for easy hassle free startups. all generators that run propane or natural gas should have this manual purge button from the factory.

Hi Jordon, great video btw, I got one used, and it was kind mess up, I have a few question, hope you can help, how do you check oil level, both yellow top are flat, they do not have the little stick for the mesure, is that ok? or the previous owner changed them? second question, the metal stick that connect to the carburator was out, I think they forgot to put it back, I figured it out where it was suposed to be conected, but there is a spring that was loose too in the metal stick. could you send me some information where it belongs? Thank you. Greatings from Venezuela, sorry for my bad English.
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 5 жыл бұрын
Carlos E Teran Y those yellow caps are fine. Just fill the oil until it just starts to come out of the fill hole where the yellow cap goes. Good find on the carburetor linkage. Without that connected the governor does not work and the engine will overspeed and destroy itself. That spring on the metal rod either goes in the same holes as the metal rod or sometime there is another hole right next to where the metal rod goes. That spring just takes the play out of the rod to make the engine speed more steady. Some engines do not have that at all. Not supper critical, but better to use it if you have it.

James Condon well it worked, a little blue smoke at the beginning, but later it become clear, i think it might be something to give a check, but I’m not sure.. I connected a lamp and it worked, can I send you some videos? I’ll like to read your opinion! Thanks man!
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 5 жыл бұрын
Carlos E Teran Y check the hertz to make sure the engine speed is good. Blue smoke is burning oil. If it went away probably not an issue. If it does not go away then could be worn rings on the piston. You can run it like that, but be sure to check the oil before using and monitor the level. It you want to show me the video, upload to KZbin and send me the link.

Does anyone know if this is a bonded or floating neutral?
@jcondon1

I do not know, but if you have a multimeter (with the generator off) set multi-meter in continuity or ohms, put one probe on the ground outlet and the other in the neutral and check for continuity.
