That style house was intended to have fish scale cedar shakes in the dormers as it does now. As others have said, you can purchase panels of vinyl (heavier weight than the siding) fish scale cedar shake. That would look correct for the house and it just depends on what color, if it were me I'd stick with red.

@@kimminton1730 Maybe it's the heat and humidity here... we do get a LOT Of rain, hurricanes and such. I suspect that it probbaly doesn't deteriorate as fast elsewhere... I'm not saying it happens fast, just saying it deteriorates here... and it's a HUGE expense to reside a house. I'd rather have something with far less maintenance... like brike (large expense initially, but lasts) or vinyl siding...

Always one step at a time. We've lived here for 2 months, just got moved to a spot on our land 2 days ago, and yesterday God blessed us with a person that spread our driveway and fixed both entrances to our land. So we can now have privacy and shade, everything in one spot, and get things put away again. Still have a long way to go before we have a garden, grass for a lawn, etc but it is one step at a time for sure. Your place is looking great and gets better every time.

Here is an idea. My friend bought his wife a new washer and dryer. The old ones were worn out. He put them on the curb as trash and the city said he would have to haul them to the scrap yard or land fill. So he immediately made a sign that said For Sale $500. That night someone stole them off the curb. Problem solved.

Grand idea, except no telling how long it has sat, so you would have to back all of the brakes off, lights probably don’t work, then hope and pray at the least the law doesn’t catch you or worse you can’t stop and run over someone. Neither one of those outcomes could be paid for with that little you get for scrap iron.

Hi Cole one of the biggest reason that I got hooked on your show was because of your honesty and your hard work period and I do mean the whole family's hard work you just don't see that anymore in this world it takes me back to the roots that I came from the farm. I've worked with a lot of people in my life and this generation has got to be the laziest. They don't want to do anything but sit around and play games and and be on their phone talking to their friends and it's just so nice to sit down with you every time you put a video out and you show me that good values are still there because your father know your father said that you did it yourself started from a very young age wanting to be responsible and stuff. And that just shows that there is still good people in the world that there is still hardworking Farmers out there. That's one of the biggest reasons that I got hooked on your show it reminds me of how hard work can get you somewhere and how if you are a hard worker and caring worker it shows in everything that you do in life. I'm just amazed at how much you accomplished young man. So enough words said oh, you got a subscriber that's going to follow you guys cuz I do enjoy all the stuff about farming.

@@oliver3166 On old farms, you NEVER threw anything away. You take parts off it to fix other things on the farm, or to create other mechanical solutions to your problem. There's one or two tractors on my grandfather's farm that were made from multiple tractors that aren't the same model or maker because they had a good engine in one, and a good back half in another Also having to pay to get rid of things, and or lack of time

After you finish…which will take a while you should put up some greenhouses and start organic farming. Nave’s interested in her garden and by that time she’ll have had plenty of practice. You could make your own sauces…jellies…pickles, etc. and sell them…Nave could do cooking / canning videos.

Don't know what you all think, but I think the beautiful attic half moon window gable should come out over the bump out of your wall, that you are putting the porch on. That just seems the logical thing to get a great look. It may be to difficult a thing to do, plus expensive, but sure would look great. Wonderful job so far. Love seeing what you working on!

Hey Cole ...it’s going to look absolutely amazing! As a person who has had many decks built on many homes may 8 suggest you look into incorporating lighting in the deck stairs and also consider an over sized stair tread (or the depth of the tread)...it looks so lovely to have a few potted plants on the deeper stairs in the summer and winter simple greenery branches and some twinkle lights that operate on batteries are a very inexpensive but really amazing little touch. I sense that you plan on spending lots of quality time on your porch things like stair lighting and extra deep steps just make for a really lovely look but more importantly the lights are extremely useful not a big cost ( I’ve always done solar) and the extra deep steps are also really awesome for those who have mobility problems and they are also great for sitting when you have big family gatherings on the porch. Just some things to think about.

Cole, I'm a retired builder in West Des Moines. I applaud you for renovating your family's old farm house. My suggestion for your third floor gable is A) Nothing is maintenance free. B) Retain the look of your old cedar "fish scale" shingles but use Hardiplank cement precolored cement shingle panels or buy actual cedar shake panels. (I can't remember who manufactured the ones I used. Ask your plumber dealer) Both come in several shake shapes in approx 5' x 2' panels, easy and fast to put up and require minimal maintenance. ( The cement panels need repainting maybe 10-15yrs depending on exposure side of house and the cedar panels if you prestain with 2 coats of an exterior UV light blocking stain/coating (I used Sherwin Williams on my house) you'll get 4-8 yrs before recoating.)) Either would look awesome up there!! I built a house by Saylorville Lake back in 98 with the cedar panels in all the gables and they still look brand new! Good luck!!
