It's always episodes like these, that actually make me appreciate the filler episodes and side quests.. we get to know and like other characters besides the main group and to help have those epic moments have us more invested

This is not what a filler is. A filler episode is an episode made from the anime that doesnt adapt the manga, it is non canon. This is just STORY.
