Colin Sahlman clocked a national record on Saturday, and the Newbury Park High School boys were at it again in the second installment of the Sundown Track Series at Azusa Pacific University.
In the final event of the night, Sahlman ran faster than anyone in high school history for 3,200m.
The Panthers senior and NAU signee produced a time of 8:33.32, which surpassed the former straight 3,200m record held by German Fernandez, who last set the mark in 2008 during the CIF State Track and Field Championships.
And he wasn't alone.
Teammates Leo Young and Lex Young were second and third, respectively, posting the No. 3 and No. 17 all-time performances at the distance.
Leo was second in 8:39.57 while Lex Young was third in 8:43.93. Newbury Park teammates Daniel Appleford was eighth (9:05.46), while Dev Doshi was 10th (9:09.40) and Hector Martinez was 11th (9:10.95).
Leo Young was only the third athlete all-time to go under 8:40 in a 3,200m race.
Clovis' Christopher Caudillo was fourth overall in 8:59.99 while Yerington's (NV) Kutoven Stevens was fifth (9:01.38) and Zack Munson was sixth (9:02.56).

To have 3 athletes from the same school run sub 8:45 in a pre-season 2 mile race is absolutely insane. That's like going 1, 2, and 3 at a national championship. While Colin Sahlman’s 3200m time of 8:33.32 is an absolutely fantastic time, and I’m in total awe of the entire Newbury Park team, we have to consider Lukas Verzbicas’ performance nearly 11 years ago when he ran the 2 mile at the Prefontaine Classic in 8:29.46. 2 miles being 3218.688m in distance, his 8:29.46 converts to about 8:26.51 for 3200m which which is .85125 sec quicker per lap than Sahlman. The only caveats are that Verzbicas ran against World Class runners and the Prefontaine Classic was 15 weeks later in the season. Can Sahlman perform better against World Class athletes later in the season? I have no doubt and I’d love to see that race!

Time for ped testing in high school athletics. Now don’t everyone get all bent out of shape but this should’ve been in place decades ago when football players were doing steroids more than the pros. Mathematically it’s nearly impossible for a school to have so many kids this fast and I know you’re going to have the coach and genetics argument but after a while things need to be proven. Everyone believed lance Armstrong and Barry bonds until the wheels fell off and most recently the Russian skater. Nobody wants to think anything nefarious is going on but it’s always possible to say I’m ignorant and a skeptic would be to ignore the past and yes people this young have done peds.

Such fantastic young talent. Excellent. It's such a shame that the USA (at High School level) is the ONLY country in the world that races a 3200m distance. Even holds "records" for it. I mean, the official distance race is 3000m. 3200m isn't even 2 Miles. I could even understand if you wanted to hark back to the old imperial distance of 2 miles but that is 3218m. So the 3200m cannot even be compared to High School times around the world. I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me why USA High schools race 3200m and 1600m races when they are meaningless internationally. That's why USA High schools can claim "world records" when they are the only ones in the world racing those distances.

The US races these distances probably because track isn’t really a popular sport here. For the people watching and even most athletes competing, they don’t know these discrepancies. A large number of high school runners actually think 1600m is the same thing as a mile. I am not certain of it, but my guess as to why we race weird distances here is simply because whoever set the rules for distance track races in the US wanted to run imperial distances but didn’t feel like setting the start lines further back. Like I said, I’m not sure, but it’s probably something like that.
@thenoodlemcgaming
@thenoodlemcgaming 2 жыл бұрын
its likely more to do with laps rather than distance, 4 laps and 8 laps are easier to understand and establish at a high school level since many high school runners arent particularly running competetive times anyways. Its not until college where people are for the most part running competetive that distance is taken into account.
@johnwilson5743
@johnwilson5743 2 жыл бұрын
@@thenoodlemcgaming Hi mate. I know what you are saying, for teenage High School athletes. But whatever other critisisms can be levelled at the USA, NO ONE can say that Americans do not understand technology. When the Athletic tracks were converted from 440yards to 400meter tracks, there is absolutely no reason why at high school level, the Olympic distances were not used for races. Yes, all around the world the old Imperial distance of 1 mile (1609m) still has an attraction so to run some of those is understandable. But an obscure, meaningless distance (1600m or 3200m) doesn't warrant belief, just because they are "even laps". Americans are far better than that.
