Hello Everyone,
Here is the video you've all been asking for - the story of rescuing Viking, the Massey Ferguson Digger, bought by you guys, the LMM community!
Once we've got it home, the fun begins, just what have we got, and what actually works?
A huge and massive thank you to all of you who helped to make this a reality!
Thank you to SBS spares who allowed us to buy the digger, and delivered it to The Shed
A Video Featuring:
Lawrie - Presenter and Overly excited to have saved something from Scrap
Trev - Cameraman and Co Presenter, falling in love with the thing,
Geffers - Cameraman, silently despairing at Lawrie's choices.

You guys really are a bunch of *Nutters* and I love that. Please, please, please don't ever change, I find watching your mechanical adventures incredibly enjoyable. The fact you attempt the rescue of classic vehicles that most people would have written off and can have fun (Well more fun than headaches) doing it is proof that when you put your mind to it you can live the dream. Respect where its due lads. I cant wait to see how the story unfolds.

I started my working life on a MF50D. Spent alot of hrs working hard, still do! My first thoughts watching was young lads are fools. But then i noticed your genuine love of this digger. Watching you pressure wash and ending up dirtier then the machine brought back great memories! You just got a new sub, can't wait to see more! (the gauge on the side is hydraulic oil and to slide the rear arm is manual, should be a release mechanism then you push it along with the arm itself)

@@lmm don't count on that. When I relocated it last week, I was 32 years old when I found out what gasoline and hydraulic fluid taste like. The steering works when you turn right, but the steering shaft unscrews when you turn left. I have yet to figure out a way to prevent water contamination in the main reservoir when it sits for more than a week, resulting in foaming. The new starter relay I ordered isn't working, so I hotwired it. It is fueled by siphon from a Jerry can ratchet strapped to the top. Its predominant paint color is rust. You're definitely ahead of me on your bckhoe-loader project, though I did buy mine for less.

At this point in the video I am comfortable, since the front bucket lifts that the back will be easy. The hard part is it running and lifting already. Now that you have cleaned it, the first thing you should do is change all the filters and fluids. If you were mechanics I would say good catch. The seals and cups in the cylinders will run over a couple thousand to keep the boom steady and not leaking. I was adding the leaking hoses into that cost. The hydraulics will have a suction screen that needs cleaned and a filter to keep the pump good. After getting everything running hire it out for chores to repay its debt. Do not bite off too big a job at first. If the job looks like 1/2 hr, good. 4 hrs iffy. 8 hrs no no no. Not knowing what you are doing will ruin a working drain or leach field.

Fantastic. Love it. You seam to have an affinity to Perkins engines. I have a 50 year old cruiser and whilst it’s not a road vehicle it does have two Perkins 6.354 naturally aspirated engines and as much as they need work, they always fire even in the dead of winter. This is why I love watching your channel. You’re a man after my own heart - the boat I saved from the point of sinking when it had 4 foot water inside and was resting on the Bottom. I'd suggest trying to find a friendly hydraulics expert in your area to help you out on the hydraulics. It can probably all be refurbished for not too much money. You really want to replace all the hydraulic lines though. A line bursting can be quite dangerous, as would be the bucket suddenly dropping to the floor because of it. Congrats on saving Viking from the gas axe!

I love parallel linkage on loaders. They should all have it. John Deere loader backhoes had it back in the 60s and earlier. And I have seen it on some cat loader backhoes if you order the material handler package. And I've seen it on a few agricultural tractors. I've also seen it on aftermarket loaders to be added to existing tractors.

Must admit I do enjoy this sort of thing. I see a lot of people have commented and I'm sure someone will already have shared the information, but it is an MF 40, the 207 is the loader model. The 40 is more akin to the MF 135 than the 35, although it is fitted with an MF 165 type rear axle and a solid heavy duty front axel. I own an MF 203, which was the predecessor to the 40 and was actually based on the 35/65 tractors. My 203 is in useable condition, but would benefit from a bit of attention here and there. Time and financial constraints have stopped this from happening, so I will have to content myself by living vicariously through you lads and your 40. Good work, hope you are able to keep it up👍

Hi Lawrie, congratulations on the digger. Drive a similar one at work and have a soft spot for the old masseys and am glad you tube suggested your video to me. A few bits of information I can give some of which I see other people have already mentioned. It should be a MF model 40 as stated on the tag plate on the dash with the serial number and it is then fitted with a model 207 shovel and 220 back hoe both with there own tags. It is new enough to have the direct injection ad3.152 Perkins engine like a 135, rather than the indirect injection a3.152 fitted to a 35. It has an uprated straight fixed spacing front axle compared to a standard tractor with an adjustable one. They are fitted with square type rear axle trumpets like a 165 with inboard wet disk brakes that a 135 would have never had, as you said there is a lot of extra weight to stop. The handbrake is a completely separate system with outboard drum brakes. The side shift for the hoe will be manual there are 2 big bolts on the bottom rail that you loosen off then it should slide using the arm to push it across, for travel on the road they are best pushed all the way to one side so they fold completely behind the machine. Anyway this is now a really long comment, look forward to more videos.

I own a 3305,(early 60s) and a 1964 205. both in need of some love. The 3305 is a now running and working on our land and yard. the 205 sadly has issues. I want to repair her for the umpteenth time since buying her in 1992! The 05 part of both model numbers referes to torque converter gearbox. A model number ending 03 is a manual 3 speed with high and low range on the short stick. plus the start safety switch. yours should have a plate on the N/S of the dash , by the engine stop. Hydraulic seals are available for all the rams, and 99 percent of the tractor parts.... except the u pipe on the exhaust manifold, so look after her, she will give you years of service....... and wont the front end lift some weight! had 2 tons on the front of my 205! Good luck. Love, light and peace.

Oh that's interesting to know, I'm finding the way MF did their model numbers to be quite confusing! Is it just one thing after another on the 205? Good to know I should be able to get all I need for it!
@eriktengwall2704
@eriktengwall2704 4 жыл бұрын
The numbering system is confusing, and was slightly different in every country. The 205 has two broken front bucket rams, due to my stupidity, trying to push a pickup and loaded trailer out of a muddy field! Also she has bearing trouble in the N/S epicyclic gear reduction box on the drive axle. the bearing in the middle has broken up, and is no longer made. So some creative engineering needed! She has been an excellent machine, and over the years, i have had just about every nut and bolt out of her, from front to back. tractor and hydraulics. I also have some machines too, MF 20 baler, and some cultivation equipment, pulled by a rare beast, MF 50 tractor. all a bit rusty, and in as found condition! .... but they work well for me, and they are excellent machines. Please come find me on Facebook, i have loads pf photos, plus i do know of several places to get new and second hand parts. would be good to welcome you as part of that family. If I can be of any assistance, message me on there. Love, light and peace.

"In my defence, I was left unsupervised..." Now, I wonder how many times Lawrie has used THAT excuse... The "what is that?" on the left side of the frame for the front-end loader is probably a sight glass for the hydraulic oil reservoir which, judging by the filter being just below it, is part of the frame of the equipment. That makes a lot of sense on smaller equipment where their isn't really space for a large reservoir anywhere on the base vehicle. The rear loader might have its own reservoir and filter, or, if it's driven off a common pump then it might all work off that one... The front wiper would, most likely, be the same assembly as the rear one and would drop from the top middle of the screen, probably around where the crest thing is on the front of the cab between the two top lights. It has screen wash as these don't count as agricultural machinery so, when they're fitted with a solid cab, like this one, they have to have screen washers for their MoT test... And I know what you were driving during the video. It's a Toyota Sera... That red ERF that's behind you in the loading video needs saving too. The old EC series were great trucks and very rare now...

I do have my eye on something 😂 I figured it must be a gauged , but it's above the oil reservoir which threw me! I'll have to investigate the wiper going back on it, I guess that makes sense about the MOT requirement. And it wasn't!

The pins and bushings need to be gone through to check for wear. The top pin of the hoe bucket is part way out is why it rattles a lot. The hydraulic cylinders can be fixed with seal kits. The pins and bushings of them need checking also. Label everything as it is taken off and take plenty of photos for reassembly.

Just remember, with all those leaking parts, no bodies under the buckets or arms, and no limbs in potential pinch points, unless everything is on the ground supported. I cringed when you reached in the engine bay under the bucket arm. If a hose gives, the whole lot can come down. Be safe while you are having fun. :-)
