100% the right thing to do. You can definitely tell when people make content they WANT to make rather than content which they think viewers want but their hearts really aren't in it. Doing what makes you happy and making content about it really shines through. Although change can be kinda scary and daunting but can also be great fun too!

I recognize what you are going trough. I'm an avid game collector myself and what I have learned about myself is that my focus keeps on shifting. There are periods where my focus is mainly on the "newer" systems like the PS3 or Wii and then after a while I might get more interested in the older 16 bit systems and games. After that it might be the DS or 3DS for a while. I think that is just natural and keeps you interested in the hobby of game collecting.

I love your videos, they're great because I'm improving my English. For example, I didn't understand what a SNES kiosk was until I looked it up, and I remembered seeing a similar one with the Nintendo 64 back in the day. I believe that anxiety, depression, and burnout are the evils of the century. People said that after the pandemic, we would come out better, but we came out worse. Now focus only on rare items, items that you really want, like that SNES kiosk, and items that are part of your collection of retro games and video games. I'd love to see a series of trade and buy. About brick-and-mortar stores, it's complicated to have a good commercial location, which costs money with rent and basic expenses. Today, everything is online. As I read in a comment, the retro gaming bubble really burst. Now everything is expensive, and some companies are making cartridge reproductions that are more expensive than if you bought an old item in good condition. Please charge less, be kind to yourself. Retro gaming is such a great hobby that it shouldn't become a burden. We'll keep following your videos.

Ok ok as a more elderly collector lol. Basically I’ve been collecting gaming memorabilia since 1985. Ok I was 16 at that point, so basically Christmas/Birthdays I would be lucky enough to get games and consoles. Always kept the packaging! Then I started buying games etc from what was named then Jumble Sales and fates then came car booties. Trouble is now! Everything is so mass over produced, loads of scammers & hype! Don’t get me wrong I love watching You Tube, but I do to a degree blame some You Tubers, indirectly they do massively have an effect on the sudden surge of vintage game values. The days of buying a real bargain have more or less disappeared. It’s all got a bit out of hand, recently, well over a 12 month period I have sold off 80% of my collection. Why? Because a majority of my collection was just there on a shelf, wasn’t interested in playing the games or hooking up a PS1 to play. I had just fallen into that trap of collecting everything. Trouble is you will never be able to collect everything! Some of the games I was missing were like thousands to buy, would I spend that? Nope! Now I am in a happy place I just grab items here and there that I want to display or have in the collection. I’ve even un-wrapped some of my sealed collectors editions just to have them on display. You no what! I enjoyed every minute of that! Been looking at a sealed box for years, and now it’s opened and sat within my display! Best feeling ever! Everything has its day, at some stage vintage games of the 80’s/90’s etc won’t be worth anything the world is ever changing, everything changes with time! All I can say is just enjoy what you have, what you can look at! But believe me with age your mindset changes! Just be happy :)

Despite my own personal losses and pains. There is always someone out there worse off. I’m not trying to put a dampener on this chat, I just want you all to be happy and just enjoy life. It does go by quickly! I have fond memories of all my years of collecting and the wonderful people I have met, and still meeting! Just don’t let collecting consume you. Do what makes you happy! If you wake up one morning and feel like doing something different, then do it!! Collecting is far more than physical items, as I have said memories, the people/friends I’ve gained. We all have but one life! So make the most of it :)

Much of my childhood was spent being last or getting the last of something and inevitably missing out. So into adulthood, I decided I'd be more in control - to the somewhat detriment of my naturally altruistic nature. But then in popped Collector's Editions for games I wanted, and I wanted everything that it offered, for fear of missing out on something. I wanted as complete a collection as possible. Thank god for lockdowns as this stopped publishers making CEs and my want gradually faded.

Very nice video and I relate to it quite a lot. I've been a retro video game collector since 1995, and I started out re-purchasing all the games that I had as a kid, mostly Atari 2006, then I expanded to NES, SNES, and Megadrive. Plus buying all the new consoles and games. It has been more than 1 year since I bought a game and I actually stopped playing. I have considered many times selling my collection or at least part of it but I'm always afraid of regretting it since I've put so much time and money into building up a relatively large collection. With that said I don't feel guilty about my burnout I believe that we have to do what makes us feel good it is a complete waste of time forcing ourselves to do something that we don't enjoy. At the moment, I've shifted to reading books instead and that's OK, maybe I'll get back to retro collecting in the future again.

Obviously you have a channel to consider which makes it different, but like you say in your video it's ultimately all got to come back to doing it for you - that'll come across in your videos either way, and its your passion and energy that have got people following you in the first place. No point in doing things if you're forcing it. I had a similar thing where I stopped actively collecting for about 4-5 years, and I've only recently gotten back into it and I am absolutely loving it again, but it was because it organically started with me gravitating towards PS2 gaming again, and the noticing some gaps in my collection, then discovering more of the library, etc etc - once I had that enjoyment back I fell in love with it again, hopefully you will too

Gem after 10 years collecting and constantly playing a game on some system I got burnt out. Haven’t played games this year and considered selling everything. Couldn’t bring myself to do it and instead boxed it all up and put it out of site. Just last week after 8 months I decided I fancied playing something so pulled a random 360 game out of a tub which happened to be Portal 2 and played it. That sparked my passion again for now. The point I’m making is that for me, not having all my games out in front of me took the pressure off and I could start taking it one at a time and enjoying what I have rather than pining for what I haven’t. Best of luck

I have never burned out, but my focus has never been on collecting, but rather playing games. I like to play them and share them and talk about them. Do I accumulate games? Absolutely. Do I sell games? Nope. But buying things just to have them doesn't appeal to me most of the time. I want to play and talk about video games like people do in book clubs, and share my experience with friends and hear theirs. I want to play co-op with my kids, and watch them discover games. I like to watch my daughter play VR (only for a few minutes at a time since she's young) and look around in wonder. I have never desired a kiosk. It wouldn't enhance my playing experience. Conversely, I absolutely have tracked down original arcade cabinets and pcbs, because they do add a lot to my playing experience. If a hobby isn't fun, it's not a very good hobby. There needs to be some satisfaction and relaxation in some capacity, whether it recharges your body, your mind, or your soul. Think about what about games you happy and do that. If chasing items is a rush, but after you get them there's nothing cathartic or ongoing to satisfy you, that's worth considering. I just got a package with three brand new, sealed games inside last night (newer games). The shrink wrap is off and they've all been played some. My sons and I will play them this weekend. Fun will be had.

They realy need to up their damn game if they want a slice of whats in my wallet. I rarely walk into any place with the intention of purchasing anything specific though. If anything space is becomming my main consideration. And i would rather have one great item than a dozen pieces of shelf fodder. Im seriously consideding culling soms of my collection just so i can havs the space for a small amount of exceptional. Thankfulky i do make an effort to pick up games and dvds that i know can be an easy quick flip. The thing about retro games now, at least for me, is you can very easily download entire rom sets of everything NES-SNES era and run on just about any low end PC. N64-Gammecube era, you can run on a middle of the road to high-end PC pretty easy. You could get an everdrive and run roms on actual console hardware. Technology is making it so I no longer need boxes of consoles and cartridges. I have actual systems because I'm attached and think they are fun to own. But with the price going out of control on some of this stuff and storage being a problem it makes it harder and harder to justify keeping.

Hi there Gebs. I think nearly everyone feels burned out at some point or another. I discovered your channel only a few years ago when you uploaded one of those £5 game hunt challenge videos. Back then, I was often looking for the absolute cheapest prices on certain games with the sole intention of reselling them. I liked how your videos helped put certain stores on the map and proved that video gaming does not always have to be an expensive hobby. As you probably know, the most popular and most viewed video on your channel so far is the one about how to clean a PS4 fan, which you uploaded back in 2016. I bet that video will continue to prove useful for many more years. Perhaps if you upload more similar videos to that, it will be viewed maybe just as much, and you may gain a lot more subscribers along the way. The videos don't necessarily need to be too technical. Even a simple checklist style video on how to set up a game console or gaming PC will always be useful to viewers. Cleaning and preventative maintenance videos will always be useful. And if you made videos about common technical faults and problems, you could show and tell how to resolve them if you have enough technical know how. On the other hand, you could make a video showing a business or individual trader that makes a living from repairs and restorations of electronics. I hope this helps you out.

During the years, I've been collecting modelcars, videogames, cd's, dvd's, blu-ray's, magazines, etc., and while not having any kind of massive collection about anything, I feel I now have more than enough stuff, so for some time, have added next to nothing, or very few selected items of anything. Videogames are pretty pricey here even on flea markets, so there's very little good deals to be found. I think if I add anything in the future, it will have to be quality, rather than quantity. I afraid the day I might have to move and pack all this stuff and unpack it again in new place, so in that sense, collections feel kind of a burden, which makes moving more complicated and laborious, some delicate stuff like modelcars can easily break if handled carelessly, etc. Sometimes I've been even thinking about selling good bunch of the stuff, and have even sold some things I didn't care about that much, but not feeling very good about selling items, that mean more to me. Space is limiting factor also, can't collect everything, so there has to be limits what I can collect. I have most of the stuff I want though, and even if I'd have more space, I'd have to ask myself what else I'd like to have and why. At least right now, I don't have good answer to these questions. I rather seem to think, is there something I could let go. Maybe it's burning out, or my collections have become too large, giving more stress than enjoyment, maybe its the same thing, a burnout.

I've been the same for quite a while. I buy games, but then seem to regret it when I get home. Its kinda become muscle memory when I enter shop. I've sold my collection several times over the years and ended up back in it. What got me back into it this time was the digital era; I'm not keen on it and prefer physical. Then that got me thinking and watching the gaming market shrink quite rapidly recently, especially Game and that kinda gives me the feeling of missing great games and losing them forever. I feel our time as collectors is rapidly running out with physical media and maybe Physical media will run dry eventually. I've noticed that all the KZbinrs I watch buy a lot of games, that'll have an impact on the availability eventually imo. Not a charity shop person but they seem to have upped their prices and again, availablity is much less than before. CeX doesn't seem to have as much as before also. Although burn out is here we could end up losing out here and that's to me is far worse.

Hi Gemma. How are you? I really enjoyed this video as I can relate to it so much. I started collecting games again back in 2014. I had a boxed snes for ages and a Gameboy but I wanted to relive my megadrive days. I found a bundle on eBay for a boxed md2 console, 5 games and two pads. It was £55 which I though was a good price. It wasn’t long before I had a collection of nearly 300 megadrive games. The most I paid for one game was £115 for mega man the wily wars on eBay. I wanted to collect boxed snes games aswell but even back then the prices were getting a bit silly so I decided on going down the Everdrive route for the snes and eventually i got one for the megadrive aswell. My megadrive collection dwindled down as I sold games to buy other bits and last year my cat needed cancer surgery and I needed money to pay for it. I sold 129 pal megadrive games for 1500. No big hitters in there. I sold them separately. I became a father last year and my gameroom became my daughters bedroom. All my remaining 360, ps2, GameCube and neo geo games are boxed up in my cellar until I move house and have more space. I haven’t really missed them to be honest. I now have a mini pc with thousands of games on and can play them via emulation. I’d love to own a big collection again but I can’t justify paying the prices people want for this stuff anymore. I saw recently one KZbinr (retro ghetto) paid £170 for a boxed copy of sunset riders on the snes. Fair play to him but to me that’s way too much. There’s still a few games I’d love to own but I’m in no rush to buy them. I’m happy enough just playing games via emulation instead of the OG versions for now.

I've given up collecting pops!. As ive gotten to the stage where I've thought that its money just sitting on a self, or in a box which could be used for a new car or a decent holiday. I have sold some already, but still have about 1000 just sitting there doing nothing and taking up room.

I like the idea of the trade up videos, though I am not sure how much I will actually enjoy the realistic grind of trading up. Its one of those concepts that when played honestly (which we know is how you'll do it,) that could go either way, and while I'll enjoy seeing you succeed I fear I might stop watching if the trades start to go wrong. I have definitely had the feeling of burnout with various collections, and I think it's just part of the natural cycle of trying to acquire everything to some extent. Though at least with my video game collection I've tended to find it is worse in two cases. One, when prices "sky-rocket" on something I'd been meaning to buy. (Looking at you, last few Armoured Core Games... and yes realistically they're still not terrible, but they have gone way up since Armoured Core VI was announced.) Though that may me being a sore loser. The second is after doing a load of carboot sales, and only seeing horribly over priced Fifa games for a few weeks. Though I am pretty sure anyone would be disheartened by repeatedly seeing Fifa 2004 attempting to be sold at £5. What I found has helped when things got bad was undertaking a 50p or £1 challenge at CEX. (Literally just buying a game for 50p or £1 while on lunch or out on errands, though usually having checked the website first so I don't spend forever looking.) The amount of PS2 and 360 games that are still that cheap is mind boggling to me, so it's easy to find something I have never played or sometimes never even seen. Plus its a really tall order for any game to be so utterly terrible that it feels like I didn't get fifty pence's worth of entertainment value out of it, so usually it ends up feeling like a win.

I collect DVD's and can say I'm bit burned out. Video-Games I don't collect much, yet few minutes ago I was playing Silent Hill for PS1. When I'm done that I will start new game of Resident Evil 2 also for PS1. My story is I bought lots of PS1 games many years ago and now I can play them all (Because I want to play my PS1). I also have PSP and GBA.

Hope your dreams all go to plan, personally I see it like I have onemof everything as you say but for a hood shop where people get an experience of "wow that's a great place" you need at least 10 pf everything! Because what happens when you open a shop ? Everyone comes and buys all your 1 of a kind brilliant stuff and you are left with a shop full of shuffleware that no ones wants and then it's like ... Got to find a supplier with the stuff you sold ... Wjich in this day and age would be a nightmare and bills have to be paid and unless you can tick off a box which says Good suppliee with retro at a price I can turn round for good profit then forget it until you have not just stock but multiple of the same item as well as lots of item to show off as in standees and figures to draw the pundits in. I know you will get what you want eventually so keep believing and hoping for that opportunity to knock and it will, but its always at the wrong time haha. Good vid and heres hoping you get the snes stand 😊

@@TheGebs24 It looks tricky but people that work with acrylics usually know what they are doing. And dont forget 3d printing. Nowadays people can do cool stuff with 3d printers. The black things on the sides of the light would be 3d printed and the rest is just acrylic and an image inside with some lights. If it was me, I would design my one with a different design.

I definitely don't think a retail shop is the way to go these days. Online is better, but making sure you have a physical presence/stand at retro events would be important. I'm still a collector but I don't go out of my way to just buy anything - it needs to be in my collection for a reason. And if you do feel burnt out, maybe focus on something else for a while? Start a new video series on a particular console or genre, concentrate on streaming, or even do some videos on your other passions (Turtles, horror).

I know exactly what you mean, @TheGebs24 I have more retro PC builds than I can manage at the moment, to the extent that I’m physically running out of space, so it’s not worth the time investment to keep hunting out retro parts. I have some saved eBay searches but I have enough retro hardware & games for now. I did mod an N64 controller, converting it to Bluetooth recently but that was a fun project that “lit the fire” for me, so to speak.

I loved game collecting retro games years ago. But to me there are 3 big issues 1. I find these amazing classic must have games which many I tried out are overrated and a few that I have brought didn't live up to the hype and It took some time to sell it to get my money back. 2. prices tend to be annoying. If the price matched the condition then ok but I see many awful conditions trying to be sold at a mint condition price and It's so weird especially when the seller or store person is a asshole. 3. I feel like there are better official options like for example I wanted DarkStalkers and the PlayStation original price was over $ 100.00 + then Capcom blessed us fighting game fans with the Capcom Fighting Collection and we were saved by our lord and saviors to play Darkstalkers Vampire Savior with friends and family and I loved it. Also I hate how some sellers would pull their fucking phones out to see prices for games I usually leave at that point and say thanks for letting me know I'll be sure to buy it later online. I hope more companies do collections of there classic games. Cool video. ^_^

I'm wondering if you're feeling burnt out because of other people's attitudes? Sounds like you enjoy the hobby 'but' you feel let down by the nature of the business... I've enjoyed your content over the years but I had noticed a somewhat jaded demeanor (although you try and stay upbeat). They say the best time to end something is when the peak has past. Sounds like you need to diversify, which, in fact, you're currently in the process of doing (what you're explaining)... Thanks for your passion, keep being you 🙏👍

Why dont you make the kiosk yourself?. Maybe not yourself but ask someone that works with aluminium, acrylic and other materials. It would be brand new and can have any design you want. Look at your mod snes, it looks cool. I've seen a lot of videos of retro colectores wanting kiosks and they are rare and expensive. Make them. The other day I watch Retro Rick "weeping" about an old card board image of Star Fox. Just go to a design shop and ask them to do whatever image you want and Im sure it would be cheaper and in better conditions. You can even ask for more than one. The same goes for the games boxes. And if what you want is the "old", you can make it look old.
