Any neurodiverse person knows the most satisfying feeling in the world as a kid (and adult) is just shoving your hands maybe halfway up the forearm deep in grains, birdseed, sand, small polished stones and even those big fill it yourself cat litter vats at petstores. Also totally agree with you on the yuck textures too, my trigger texture is grease, butter or oil. I’m going to speak to the plus side of a toilet mat. When I’m in my own home absolutely yes to a toilet mat. But for the time being, I’m living at my daughters house while mine is being renovated because I’ve recently become disabled because of some back issues. So while I’m at my daughters house, I have to share the bathroom with my 18 year old and 16 year old Grandsons. Now you’d think they’re old enough to not be peeing on the wall behind the toilet, the floor in front of the toilet, all over the edge of the toilet so it runs down the front and sides. Ok. Now that I’ve completely 🤮 🤢 grossed out everyone. I’ve talked to my daughter, my Grandsons (repeatedly), the cat, the dog. It does no good. These boys are so amazing in the way they jump up and run to me anytime I’ve needed help (or needed anything). But I swear they are blind when they are in the bathroom. So yep, daily, I toss a clean towel on the floor in front of the toilet. I refuse to step in puddles of pee anymore in my socks, fuzzy slippers or bare feet. And I’m the only one that cleans the bathroom. I’ve made them take turns. But the same eyes that can’t see where they are peeing, also can’t see to clean it up! Lol. Rant over.

I can honestly say that birseed is an amazing tactile experience. My preschoolers made birdfeeders with birdseed, coconut oil and pine cones. The seed is so soft when you run your hands through it!

The fact that I knew exactly where Eric was talking about when he said he saw a concert at Toads Place, New Haven ct is astonishing to me. I grew up there and to be watching someone on KZbin that is also from there it’s just kind of weird in a cool way.

I whole heartedly understand all of colleens sensory stuff! There's a certain kind of blanket that catches on EVERYTHING even though it's soft. I also hate touching certain things.

As a fellow adult with adhd I related with everything Colleen said about her sensory issues. From hating washing dishes, sand, different fabrics to loving the feeling of a tub of birdseed.

I have SPD and as a kid I went to sensory therapy. They had these bins along the walls and ground with different types of things (sand, seeds, marbles, ect...) and some were absolutely amazing to step into and put your hands in, and some were awful so I totally relate to the sensory overload.

I know this sounds strange but when I was little my grandma gave me one of her dish towels to use as my stuffed bunny’s blanket and I love how it feels when it’s cold! It’s comforting and reminds me of her she and my grandpa who gave me the bunny passed when I was 7 so it’s nice to have things to remind me of them!

I feel so understood by Colleen… I also have ADHD and totally hate touching certain things, ESPECIALLY dirty dishes. The slimey-ness of the dirty dishes and I too hate the feeling of wearing gloves! My boyfriend always gives me shit for not doing the dishes but I adamantly hate it because of the textures/sensations the most. I also can’t stand the feeling of dander on short hair dogs (and some cats), if I pet a short haired dog I have to almost immediately wash my hands, despite loving dogs! However long haired dogs and cats I have no issue with, because they tend to not have the same type of texture/dander layer.

About the whole rooting topic, as a Brit I always thought it was called “routing”, which here is pronounced the same as “rooting” (I don’t know why, just English tings I guess lol), so my logic was that the rooting reflex was the baby searching for a source of food like you search for a destination with a map or something. But the only way I could liken the two is because English people pronounce both words the same, and so it makes sense why Americans or people that would rhyme “route” with “bout” and not “boot” wouldn’t make that messy connection like I did 😂

Colleen you are such a mood when you talk about your sensory issues! This is the most I have ever related to you! I have intense sensory issues when it comes to taste, smell, sound and touch. Even when someone walks behind me I get chills. I am so glad I am not alone with these issues! Thank you for talking about this!
