I really hope that Colleen and Eric have a conversation about this outside of filming this podcast to help open a Colleen's eyes about how common sex, drugs and alchohol are to the teenage experience. I never did drugs but when I drank or had sex I was safe because my mom was so open about it and knew how to keep me safe.

Same, my parents are the best! They have the philosophy that if they tell us (me and my siblings) not to do it we'll probably do it anyway so it's better to just make sure we're doing it safely. I thought Colleen came off as quite judgemental towards anyone who has had sex in high school, especially since it's so common now. It isn't really seen as a bad or scandalous thing anymore (at least in my experience) and she's making it seem like it's absolutely horrible if you have sex in high school. I like Colleen but I think she needs to take some time to realize that just because it wasn't her personal experience, doesn't mean it isn't anyone else's.

Same! My parents were teen parents, my dad is now a successful business owner and my mom a strong independent woman and they taught me about sex education very young and put me on birth control at 15!! I thank God everyday that I had a safe home to ask for contraception and to pick me up from unsafe parties! We loved going to parties but some would get hella out of hand so it was great to know my family would pick me up, not judge me, and make sure I wasn't driving with under the influence teens who just got cars

You shouldn’t encourage that lifestyle. Keep your children safe but don’t encourage. Don’t helicopter parent, let kids experience and learn on their own, guide them, protect them, support them, but don’t encourage that behavior. It’s actually a very big issue that alcohol and drug use is very overlooked in college students because “it’s apart of the experience” but that is why a lot of college students who have an actual issue die from alcohol poisoning or overdose because their behavior is no longer seen as “dysfunctional” like it should be because we have made alcoholism and drug use a normal part of the college or teen experience. Not a great message to send.

I love Colleen and I've watched her videos for literally a decade, and I have grown to respect Colleen's mom in many ways, but I have no respect for the fact that she wouldn't allow her children to take health and sexual wellness classes. And I don't even think it's fair to blame it on the religious aspect. It's embarrassing that she wanted to shelter and shame her children to the point where Colleen can't even comfortably watch fake sex scenes in movies and television.

I LOVE you Colleen and religiously watch your main channel, vlog channel, and this podcast, however I do notice that when you don’t agree with Erik or you don’t have the same experiences as him you completely disregard him and don’t listen to his side. You kind of make it out like he’s lying. I grew up in a town where drugs were/still are everywhere. Euphoria is very accurate to mine and I’m sure a lot of peoples high school experiences. I don’t mean this with any hate, just maybe listen to other peoples sides. You say yourself you grew up very sheltered which isn’t most peoples experience. Love you and will always be a supporter. ❤️ edit: also it’s a little hurtful to see you referring rue as only a “drug addict” in the show. Especially with such judgment. She suffered a lot of trauma in her life and is a person outside of the drugs. Please be more mindful when speaking ill about addiction. I’ve experienced so many family members and classmates slowly fade away from it and mourning the loss of someone who’s still alive is heartbreaking. Just remember even if you’re just speaking about a character on a tv show, it’s real for a lot of people and you’re speaking about someone’s family member or friend. Again no malice is intended with this just trying to educate. There’s always room to learn and teach! ❤️

No hate intended with this comment just another perspective to add to the conversation :) My sister passed away 4 years ago from a drug overdose and if I were to hear someone call her a drug addict I would feel a little sad and offended. I think the off-putting part of the podcast for me was when Erik said “you are Rue” and Colleen said “ok so I’m a drug addict.” Erik was right to say there are more layers to her character. People with drug addiction are not drug-addicts- they are sisters, brothers, moms, dads, friends, and human beings. I love Colleen, just wanted to point out the language choice and how a small change to the way things are phrased makes a huge difference! :)

The themes presented in Euphoria, things like sex, drinking, drugs, and addiction, are incredibly common in high school. In real life, it obviously isn't so cinematic with the aesthetically pleasing parties and the amazing outfits and makeup, but the sex and drinking and drug use are 100% realistic. Teens often have bad decision-making skills and will experiment with reckless behavior. I just think Colleen was sheltered, which isn't a bad thing, just a different experience from the "norm". Edit: I’d also like to add the traumatic things that individual characters go through BEYOND the sex and substance use are incredibly relatable. Cassie being objectified by boys/men and not understanding her worth beyond her sexuality. Maddy being a victim in an abusive relationship. Rue’s addiction. Nate’s toxic masculinity. Parents passing away or abandoning the family. Every viewer can relate to someone.

i love colleen and have for years, but it was really sad to hear her talk so harshly about the topic of drug addiction. i understand there was probably no mal intent, but it is a very serious topic that so many people struggle with and just throwing around the term "drug addict" so nonchalantly was really disappointing. a lot of people can say the exact same thing about colleen's experience, how they were not sheltered and weren't exposed to sex drugs and alcohol at such a young age. but just because someone didn't experience it first hand does not mean it is not prevalent. Euphoria really does portray how high school is for a lot of people. it is definitely romanticized to an extent because it is tv, but there is so much more to the show and especially the lead character Rue. there is trauma, grief, self reflection. all things that are very real and very serious in real life. i love colleen and respect her greatly, just with a platform like she has i feel like having more empathy for topics like this is VERY important. i hope anyone watching who is struggling or knows someone struggling with addiction doesn't feel any less of a person, especially with the attitude and stigmas about it already.

Unfortunately, Colleen is a little naive on the high school front. I graduated in 2006. Drugs, sex, and alcohol were EXTREMELY prevalent in my school. Euphoria is incredibly accurate about the high school experience. Are some instances a little more intense and unrealistic? Yes. But it’s a TV show. The overall themes of heavy drug use, heavy alcohol use, figuring out relationships and sexual identity, and lots of sex are all relatable experiences for many high schoolers/college kids. Colleen grew up sheltered, and therefore likely was also surrounded by fairly sheltered good kids. That is definitely not the experience of most high schoolers. Also, I have to agree that when you guys referred to Rue as “a drug addict” you guys seemed pretty judgmental. You’re missing an opportunity for a larger, more nuanced conversation. I get you guys are tired and exhausted, but that’s a topic that deserves a little more thoughtfulness when discussed. People don’t wake up one day and choose to become an addict.

Colleen I have complete compassion for the way you grew up and the way it shaped your experiences and perspectives, but I can assure you it’s certainly not the norm. I think it’s important to remember that just because you haven’t had the same experiences you shouldn’t disregard the pervasiveness of things like sex, drugs and crime (and their effects) in the lives of teenagers. It can be quite hurtful to people to feel like their life circumstances are being invalidated. I know you would never do this intentionally, but I think you’re coming at this from quite a narrow world view. I don’t fault you for this but, perhaps take this into consideration next time you talk about stuff like this. Edit: Let’s stick with peace and love guys. Expressing opposition to opinions and ideas is one thing, but degrading someone as a person for holding the views they do is never productive.

I’ve watched your videos for years, but that discussion rubbed me (and many others) the wrong way. Also, I’m not sure if you were, but it seems like you were kind of preaching abstinence. We should be preaching safe and consensual sex. As long as Erik was consenting, who cares if he had sex in high school? It’s pretty normal. Another thing, the tone you had when you said “drug addicts” seemed very judgey. I’m sure you have so many follows who have or are currently struggling with substance abuse…

As parents and adults we can’t shame people for their experiences. Giving them education and tools to be safe is all we can do. Granted Colleen has never parented teenagers, and you’ll never truly understand until you’re in it, but I think a lot of her commentary was from how she was raised. I grew up Christian and there is shame in sexuality or sexual acts of any kind. My mom also took me out of sex Ed. I’m mad about that. I don’t want that for my kids. I want them to come to me with questions and concerns. We give them condoms for when they decide they are ready. They don’t have to ask. When you have teens, you’re more of a guidance counselor for them. You don’t discipline and punish for their choices. Talk about consequences and also help them get through them: We teach them how to be safe. And if they choose to experiment, which they will, like the majority of all teenagers do, they should never fear shame. I really didn’t enjoy every time she said “LOVEEEEEEY” when Erik was hinting at being sexual as a teenager. He’s not bad or wrong for that. That was his journey. Our bodies are MEANT to want to have sex. I’ll never be mad if I find a condom in my kids rooms. I’d be thankful they are being safe, but we would have to about the correct way to discard them and how that is also a safety issue lol! How sexual someone is, does not mean how good or bad they are as a person. Ever.

I feel as if its actually more rare to have colleens experience than it is to have an experience in Euphoria. All of us teens LOVE it because its so fucking true and real; makes up feel less alone. It almost felt as if she's shaming erick/ others for having that type of experience growing up. Because yes colleen, drugs, sex, pregnancy, they are all HUGE problem for High schoolers yes it may depend on the friendgroup but its real life; I know colleen is a good person but she really doesn't know how the real world works. For the euphoria debate: drug use is definitely jarringly common in high school now. Like i knew people addicted to opiates and using drugs far worse than weed. Sex unfortunately started really young around where I live too, I think the earliest someone lost their virginity was 12-13 and we had people pregnant in 8th grade. Unfortunately, I think it’s due to the lack of education schools give around topics like drugs, alcohol and sex. I think because it’s considered “taboo” to talk about with children because they think exposure is gonna make them more prone to doing it, but realistically would make them more informed and have access to better resources!!! Obvi not all of Euphoria is realistic but 17-18 year olds exposed to lots of drugs and sex… unfortunately realistic😭😭 ~ From a member of Gen Z

Bless Erik and his endless patience. It constantly seems like he makes the sacrifices and accommodations in the relationship. His whole life revolves around Colleen and their/her family and it’s pretty hard to watch her dismiss and judge his experience so harshly. As someone who constantly speaks on acceptance and embracing differences, Colleen is still extremely judgmental. This one was really hard to watch, honestly.

I love her so much and I'm a huge fan but yes, this was very tone deaf. Clearly she's biased and doesn't even realize it because of her upbringing. As someone in small town CT public school, I had Erik's experience essentially (I went to the Milford mall and Trumbull mall all the time in high school lmao). And many of my friends and people I know had more of a Euphoria experience (or Saved by the bell, Degrassi, Skins, etc). And many people truly suffered trauma at a young age. Ugh this makes me so sad

Oof. Colleen should’ve really thought about this, before making this a topic on this weeks podcast. I don’t believe the quirky sheltered act. There’s no way, someone can be this oblivious to what’s going on, in high schools. & she should’ve just had this podcast, as a one woman show, because she never lets Erik speak, and when she does, she puts him down. 🤦🏼‍♀️

its definitely possible. just because it wasn't the experience you had or the experience other people you knew had doesn't mean there aren't lots of people that have very different experiences.

@@8happyperson I understand that. I’m merely responding to the OPwho said they don’t believe quirky sheltered act and that she’s that oblivious to the things around bc gasp maybe they legit weren’t around her. Some other commenter legit said EVERYBODY goes through this. No that is absolutely false. To say “ many” or “most” is one thing but to just generally assume that it’s literally everybody’s normal is just false.

Advice - sex- teach your kid about sex don’t preach abstinence but teach how to be safe and how to protect yourself and how to speak up for themselves and say no if they feel pressure Drugs- don’t just say drugs are bad explain it to them read out drug withdrawal symptoms show them videos of people going thru it show before and after photos of people who did drugs Also always be open and don’t punish them for normal teenage things the more open you are the more they will come to you with things and trust you and be open to you

If Colleen would ever LISTEN to another persons human experience she might learn a thing or two but she always shuts it down because if it isn’t her experience then it’s not right or it can’t happen. How is it so unbelievable that people can have points of view or experiences different than her own? when Erik even tries to give his two cents she either interrupts him to talk about herself, or makes fun of him. She’s so out of touch it’s unreal, we are the same age both mothers and wives so that is no excuse. The judgement behind her voice when she says drug addicts is so nasty! Colleen please learn that you are incredibly privileged and have been incredibly sheltered and YOUR experience is actually the odd one, most of us live in the real world.
