On the religion topic, it makes so much sense that different people respond differently to religion and church because it's ran and fueled by humans. People are so different and their experiences and brains can cause them to interpret, share, and internalize religious teachings differently. I'm coming from the perspective of a former campus missionary who is now in a stage of questioning.

Something I've recently learned about religion based on Colleen's experience and even my own is that religion isn't really the problem, it's the way people interpret it. I LOVE how you approached the religion conversation Colleen! I myself am a Christian, I’m also gay so my life has had a lot of turmoil to say the least. I think the biggest thing that allowed me to be true to who I am and love who I want to love, while also remaining a strong believer in my own personal idea of Christianity is that my parents very actively and appropriately responded to injustice WITHIN the church, and if we went home they would share with me how they disagreed with certain things. I wasn’t necessarily in this bubble of only one way of thinking, but I heard a variety of opinions. My parents love and accept me, did not teach me that being gay was a sin, nor do they believe that to be true. So when things like that came up at school or church, I had learned to take that information and to critique it just like we do with everything else. I’m very very lucky that was my experience as I know others are not so lucky. But I have, and always will acknowledge that Christianity specifically has caused IMMENSE hurt in this world and I refuse to be a part of that hurt
@Ell_Bell053 жыл бұрын
I appreciate Colleen opening up about her past because so many people have similar experiences, including myself. More people than I think anyone really knows because of how strong cancel culture can be if you speak out about [any] church. We hear a lot about how religion does wonders for people, but it can also be really damaging for others. It's also important to note that there isn't anything current followers can do to undo another's past trauma.

I agree, Kory would be so fun to watch on here too! In response to the bit where you discussed religion: I love Jesus and I’m really involved in my church! A relationship with God has completely changed my life for the better. I wasn’t raised in church, I discovered it on my own when I was a junior in high school. I experienced a huge boost in my self esteem and have been taught grace and love over condemnation and shame. Being part of my church, I’m surrounded by people who I don’t feel like I have to “perform” for and I know I can always turn to when I need support. But I do understand why you feel the way you feel Colleen! Like you said, every church is different and people experience things differently. I sooo recognize that the message the church sent out, can mess you up as a child. My little brain was always so honestly confused and sad because of these messages of nobody being good enough. It was so different from the world view I naturally have. And I tried so hard to understand the churches perspective but I could NOT make it fit my brain. And I always thought that made me a horrible person. It made me such a scared kid, afraid of doing everything wrong in Gods eyes. It just turned me from being a really happy little nugget to being so confused and sad about the world and myself. That's not worth it!!! You're not alone in this

The San Francisco ugly law was an ableist law to keep disabled people off the streets. Wikipedia says that it was “illegal for "any person, who is diseased, maimed, mutilated or deformed in any way, so as to be an unsightly or disgusting object, to expose himself or herself to public view." I, myself, am a disabled person, and learning how deeply ingrained ableism is in our laws and society is quite frankly disgusting.

Just wanna say, I have so much love and respect for you Colleen. All the more for sharing your personal struggle but I fully admire your level of accomplishment in discussing it from a path of healing. You inspire me to work on my own mental health journey; especially as a grown woman who also resorts to humor and comedy to get by. Thank you. Thank you; you are a light in this world. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Thank you for talking about your experience with religion, church, and how it affected you. It's hard to talk about something that is uncomfortable. I think you did a great job, and I appreciate that you talked about it.

I was raised without religion (not intentionally, my parents just weren't religious) but I grew up in a very conservative town. I feel like a lot of the religious kids I grew up with were of two extremes: 1) Became resentful of religion and left or 2) Became more heavily involved than they were before. On one hand, one of my best friends is going through a lot of religious trauma while another person I know is famous on TikTok for religious content.

She had a lot of experience with her early Livestreams when she answered fans questions. I missed those.

This was a great podcast! I did miss Erik, but only because the way you both play off of and react to each other is so golden and magnetic. I’m sure I’d like a solo episode by Erik too, but I’m a big fan of the duo.

I totally feel the same way about people "being trendy" with the whole ADHD thing. My son was diagnosed about a year and a half ago. It is sometimes a struggle just to get him ready for school in the mornings. It is a daily struggle not only for him but for everybody around him. Its not funny or cute to pretend you have a diagnosis you really don't. BTW this is not me saying you are trying to be trendy!

Watching Colleen for years and years and having this solo flight podcast is not boring or any less than a podcast with her and Erik. It's having a hangout with a friend for an hour and a half

The peacock law in Arcadia is because there is an arboretum near the mall where many live and they often escape into the surrounding neighborhoods.

You have done a great job doing the podcast alone...the weird laws segment was hilarious! Those laws need to RELAX!!!

I just wonder if you know that you could use your homeowners insurance for the air conditioner and potentially not be out so much money depending on your deductible. And that way the company your using is generally a more reputable because they want the contracts through insurance companies. Hope you see this comment and it helps.

Colleen, we have so much in common. I grow up in a Catholic home and I feel exactly how you feel. But the good part is that I was able to take all the good aspect from it like the spiritual side and used that to help. You are the best!

Colleen i LOVED this solo podcast, like someone said a super long tiny tortilla talk c: I'm also glad you talked about your religious experience, my childhood religious experiences were shockingly similar. Appreciate you opening up, love you ❤

Oh no you guys got scammed, if only my husband and I didn't live in Az we'd fix it for free if not free then cost of whatever piece that needs fixed/replaced. I hate that companies take advantage of families, it's NOT okay.

Thank you for discussing the harm that those religious messages can inflict on a child. I had a very similar experience and have now developed borderline personality disorder, which I attribute a lot to my religious upbringing.
@KM-ur8ki3 жыл бұрын
Also, you don’t have to blame yourself for “taking it that way.” Telling young children that they are inherently bad IS harmful. You were a child. Caregivers should not say anything to children that could be interpreted in that way. You would never tell Flynn that he is inherently bad or undeserving of love. Sure, religion can be helpful for some people, but a lot of American Christianity includes self-deprecation and self-hatred starting from a very young age. It’s not your fault that you were harmed by those messages.

A house coat is a bath robe! I wish Erik was there to see of he thought it was an east coast thing. I'm from the east coast and we call it a house coat or a robe. It's the same thing. Also salt on the roads ruin vehicles over time they rust out badly. Maybe that's why?

When you speak about your experience in the church, I think it is important that you speak your truth on this. People have to understand that it is possible that someone could feel this way. Because even though I personally didn’t feel this way, I KNOW that you are not and will not be the only one to think this way…. Thank you Colleen so much for talking about it
