This somewhat reminds me of a missing person case from my home town in the California desert from over 40 years ago. A man named Rod Harris who worked with my Dad used to go fishing in nearby Lake Isabella. Its a man made lake that is regularly stocked with fish. You can sometimes go there and be the only person fishing, other times its packed with people. Rod went fishing one Saturday and was the only person on the lake. Later that day, someone found his fishing boat upside down in the lake, but Rod was nowhere to be found. This was in 1977 and even today his body has never been found. I was only 13 at the time and went to school with his kids. Half the people in town think Rod staged his drowning and started a new life elsewhere. Easy to do back then. But, he had a good family and a happy life (or so it seemed). If he was having an affair it would have been hard to hide in a town that small. But then again, how did he capsize his fishing boat as skilled as he was at fishing. It makes no sense. You would think by now someone would have found him or his body. He was finally pronounced dead in 1978. These stories always bother me because the families never really have closure

@@Randy.E.R I understand, back then there was hardly a cohesive LE agency anywhere and they didn’t have computers to aid them. Theory only:Adult onset schizophrenia with first episodes of psychotic breaks and perhaps mania. Jason tried to self medicate his MH symptoms via street drug usage. His paranoid impulse to hide coupled with being young and physically fit made recovery of his body difficult due to his ability to travel far from the crash site until he was exhausted and succumbed to the elements. Foraging animals far from the presumed but incorrect search area will make it even more difficult to recover any remains.

There’s a picture in the video of the car running in the ditch. And it was only barely below freezing. So he got his car stuck in the ditch and left the heated interior to stand outside the car for hours at which point he undressed and wandered off? Doesn’t make sense. Paradoxical undressing happens because your body will start to feel like it’s burning from the cold, and your brain is too close to dying to think rationally. It doesn’t happen the second a cold breeze hits your neck. It’s *late* stage hypothermia, as in when you’re already essentially dead. I know it was said the rear window was smashed, but be realistic, are you gonna leave the sheltered interior to stand on the side of a dirt road? And if the heat was still working in the car it’s going to be better to sit there with the vents aimed at you then to sit on the side of the road. And my impression was the clothes were next to the car, not as if he had been trying to walk out for hours and finally the cold got him.

When my mother was growing up, she lived on her grandfather's farm. A nearby neighbor was a pig farmer who mysteriously disappeared. Nobody saw him leave his property or in town. His vehicle was parked in it's usual spot. His house, where he lived alone, was not locked. Then, one of the searchers found a single button from his overalls in the pig's trough. They theorized that he had suffered some medical condition that either rendered him unconscious or instantly ended his life. They believed that his pigs consumed him after he collapsed into their food trough. Jason's body disappearing in this way is plausible. It's sad because, if this is truly what happened, there will never be any trace of him that will be found.

It's possible that his clothing was discarded because he became hypothermic in the 30° weather. At a certain point in the process, hypothermia makes you feel very warm, and people often take off layers of clothing in an attempt to cool down, which of course only accelerates the process of freezing to death. This is something we see in the Dyatlov Pass incident.

One would think but it's not uncommon. Hit some trees at a good rate of speed on an unpaved surface and the car will spin causing damage to the rear. Look where the car was found, the largest tree in the picture was off the rear of the car in perfect position to knock off the rear bumper.

Not odd. He didn't really crash "forward" into the trees as in a head-on collision. His front bumper is only damaged at the *side* , meaning he basically drove into something which started as a side-frontal impact--damage to the front fender, wheel, and rocker area. Upon impact he probably started steering the other way but the gravel and the fact that's probably partially off-road (low traction) meant the vehicle's rear end slid out and then hit more stuff. The rear damage is similar to the front. The bumper came off but not as a result of rear impact...the rear bumper is still on the car in the accident, it was removed later as a result of towing or at the tow yard. The rear was also a side impact that crumpled in the rear quarter and was enough to shatter the backlight. Note the rear of the car is actually resting against the tree it hit in the at-scene photo. There's also visible tree/brush branches inside on the rear deck which entered after the backlight shattered. It's all very consistent with that type of accident.

@@Rico_G ...as your slamming on the brakes? I've done this, but damage to the rear wasn't nearly so bad. Spinning also slows it down. Now fishtailing and accelerating to get back control, then front crashing would indicate he wasn't all that impaired, but fighting to "get control" and maybe from whom? So the large tree nearby was rammed going backwards? A fight inside the vehicle could have been a cause. It's not reasonable to me to be speeding fast enough to lose control on a deserted unfamiliar road, evidently lost, and slamming the front, only to have the back much worse damaged. Father's photos came days after the fact? The police were too quick, peculiarly so, not to seriously investigate immediately. The person could have been hurt, brain damaged, having a stroke and LOST, as they realized, and they left? That area may have a reputation. And it's likely some of their local politicians/business owners use pot, so no excuse there not to take it seriously. Is the-devil-may-care attitude because they were able to see he wasn't a local? If a sick twist hitchhiker recognized a young, sympathetic, "privileged" pot head, the name and address on registration/license would be a practical trophy for future reference if out for an accidental thrill that night, but maybe a planned one for the future, no? I'm hoping it wasn't anyone else that brought a sad end to this guy, but damage to the parents car/drugs like pot just don't seem a strong enough motive to do what he supposedly did alone.

I recently starting diving into the Maura Murray case again, which I do on occasion, and decided to take a look at the Jason Landry case after I saw someone compare the two cases. Not that he was saying they were connected or anything like that, just that there were a lot of similarities - both college students, cars abandoned after accidents in unexpected places which could not really be explained, alcohol/substance may be involved, and both vanished quickly and have never been seen or heard from again - Maura 20 years in 2024. I think in both cases, a more immediate serious search effort could have been useful. Anyway, I was glad to see you did an analysis of Jason's case, Dr. Grande, (I know you did one on Maura too), this is the best analysis I've seen on it, imo. I think your theory is the most likely, that Jason was alone, in the midst of some sort of psychotic break or something, perhaps suffering from a paranoid episode, and there may be, unfortunately, little or nothing to find at this time. Also, good point about how people like to have someone else to blame. SUCH a great point about the function of/value in assigning blame in situations like this. The human brain's inability to tolerate "open loops" is so great that creating a version of the story in which there's someone to blame feels like a requirement. Then that created story feels more logical to more people over time than the truth of "we may never know." It's such a fascinating spiral! As always, loved your analysis and your commitment to -- in this case -- some hog-tied humor. ;) I wonder if someday you might analyze the 2015 case of Chelsea Martinez & Jason Nisbit? They met online and arranged to meet in person. She: suicidal. He: cannibal-curious. I'd LOVE your take on the plentiful converging psychological and legal issues this one created.

I don't think of it as an "open loop" as much as believing you know your child/loved one better than anyone else; that justice is so elusive for many more people in this world than not, so many unreported/undiscovered murders and disappearances (ask law enforcement, not to mention priests who won't answer but know, the ones you never hear about outnumber by far the ones you do). It's more about wanting them BACK (in any likely and devastated form). If murdered the perp might reveal where they are for a deal; justice for the deceased, and the need to survive it all w/o perishing from soul-destroying worry and mourning. Also, what's up w/switching at the critical moment in directions to Snap-Chat? Or wanting to die from exposure by stripping? And why break the back window? (Damage to rear end doesn't look as if the original cause of crash damage to the front would have caused that heavier damage in the rear bust, as if he was struck there 1st, or followed, he lost control, then someone smashed into the back, and harder? A bad drug "trip" doesn't seem likely when heading for home and family in his parents' vehicle (better safe to do it in his room at school or parents' house and better for the youngest, more sensitive and maybe a little more favored child, I'm speculating). Not looking for blame in others, so much as wanting their loved one BACK. (Parents profession/music and his looks/reported character speak to a guess he was caring, thoughtful of his siblings and them, wouldn't ever want to give pain/suffering even in a dazed, drug addled stupor and car accident. Likewise, when it comes to the onus of drugs/suicide, his parents, father in a professional side bar often would have to deal with it (unfaithful wife, depressed, abused, sad/lost reasons for suicide) in his congregation/community. (Obviously this son didn't feel too worried about being (smoke) detected at home...?); and both parents, in our times, would know how to deal with overdoses/murder. It's a fact ministers deal with these issues in the most personal way in both instances. And another fact: more people more murderers, and the chance of finding where the victims are so difficult. More about prayers answered, and HOPE than looking for a scapegoat, in my humble opinion (and experience)...and as S. King writes, "...hope is a good thing", no?😥🧖🌻

There is also a phenomenon in which a person will actually strip their clothing off in the late stages of hypothermia (typically right before death). It’s called paradoxical undressing. If he did in fact die of exposure, which I think is most likely, the clothing in the road would make sense.

*Dr. Grande I agree with your theory the most, I think he was most likely up for a few days on Meth which makes sense with him having paranoid delusions at the time thinking he was being followed which is why he crashed and it also makes sense with his clothes being scattered around his car because some people who start overdosing on Meth tend to strip off their clothes because of hot flashes and thinking that they're dying and it doesn't matter what the outside temperature is.*

Unanswered question: why did he embark on a journey home at 10:30 pm planning to arrive at 1:00 am in the morning? That opens the possibility, along with the erroneous turn, that he was planning an excursion along the way. Perhaps there is something to this or maybe there is nothing to it. But it is a valid question. I also partly agree with the stated assertion that the police were less than diligent in the search because of their assumption that the car and belongings were from a drug user and of less worth. I do believe the situation was discounted by the police but not because of undervaluing the victim's life. I suspect that the area of the occurrence is a well-known area of drug transactions and other crimes and drug use and the police are accustomed to seeing a lot of unexplained, weird stuff in this remote area and thought that this was one of those times. They anticipated that the car's owner would show sooner or later to retrieve it. It's not a valid excuse, but a possible explanation.

Dr Grande's explanation is not really that far off initial LE's assessment. Basically he was under the influence, went the wrong way, crashed, and then wandered off to his death (both dazed by the accident and due to the drugs). Only thing is Dr. Grande isn't stupid like the police who just left the scene and didn't bother looking for him or collecting evidence. They got the scenario right, they just prioritised getting donuts or something, over doing any police work thereafter. The later theories of volunteer "investigators" and "the community" is just nonsense people made up to explain things without blaming the guy--exactly what Grande says here too. That "theory" is so far fetched it's not funny but people are just blinded by the need to "explain" the disappearance by some sinister plot or people, and is reinforced by the fact that his body was never found.

While listening to you discuss this case, I came up with a theory, maybe. I don't know what evidence they found at the scene - signs that he was / had been smoking a joint, etc. - or anything so this is just a wild guess. I think he got to the place where he was supposed to turn right, but saw the road to the left which looked more discrete. He wanted to smoke a joint, so went left to smoke while he was not driving on a more public (police-populated) road. (From my college days, this is something I had done many times.) He closed his WAYS app so that it would not keep telling him to "Re-route. Make a U-Turn..." because it's annoying. He was going to reopen the app once he headed back to the main road. I think he was driving down the gravely part of the road, thinking he was in the clear and no one was around so he went to light a joint (or something that distracted him like reaching for his bag with the weed). He swerved, hit something, maybe hit his head and became completely disoriented and did all the weird stuff following the wreck. Then maybe hogs got to him or something like that. I'm sure there is evidence to dispute this theory, but I know from my days in college, I've been close to being in this exact situation, minus the removal of clothes and being eaten by hogs part. Question: Is there evidence that the clothes on the ground were the clothes he was actually wearing at the time? And not clothes he had packed for his trip? If a situation like that was the case, I think that makes the mystery a lot less mysterious.

Hypothermia can cause confusion, loss of coordination, hallucinations, and paradoxical undressing. Alcohol and drug use can speed up the loss of body temperature. Jason could have crashed due to hypothermia if his heater wasn’t in use and wandered away, stripping off his clothes. Alternatively, he could have temporarily lost consciousness due to the crash and become hypothermic and then wandered off. There wasn’t a lot of time between the crash and the police discovery of the scene though.

The area surrounding the car was exhaustively searched, to a wide radius. No trace of him was found. If he simply walked away into the surrounding land, probably tired and disoriented, collapsed and died from the cold weather, his body would have been found. I think he took the wrong turn, and his cell phone fell between his seat in the car (in fact the phone was found wedged next to his seat the next day), as he is trying to grab his phone, he runs off the road. He climbs out of the car, starts walking along the road. A larger vehicle, a truck or something, hits him and kills him. The truck driver panics, takes the body and hides it. Nothing was stolen from his car. He even had a video game system in his bag. If this was a robbery gone wrong, why would the valuables still have been there? I do think that the police waited too long to take it seriously. The parents got the case in the media fairly quickly, that was why the police finally started doing something. Unfortunately this type of police reaction is too common in missing adult cases.

I stopped using all addictive substances two years now. the mind-bending and hallucinating effect of marijuana must not be underestimated being by your selves, and in an unfamiliar place can really freak one out. it helps to know and to remind the working of the drugs, to help someone get a grip on the situation, for such a young life this could be much more difficult to do so, understandably. the feeling of loss for those left behind must be enormous wish them all strength to master the situation ahead.

He prob got a good ways down the road and regained some of his senses and then headed for a treeline or some other cover where no one would see him walking down the road nude. From there he could have gotten lost or thought he could take a short cut to somewhere for help and never found his way back. Or he could have attempted to take shelter in a culvert or ditch and died from exposure.

He was using drugs, there is a video of him prior to leaving San Marcos. It was cold. He was going the wrong way. It was dark, and he was probably disoriented? He crashed and hit a tree. Probably hit his head? Wandered off. No body ever found? Great video! Sad story!

Cannabis does indeed cause paranoia, but rarely at the level described in the scenario presented in the conclusion. At least, not unless it is laced with another substance, and there is no evidence that was the case. What Dr. Grande proposes is reminiscent of Brandon Lawson, but in that case his behavior was attributable to prolonged meth use. I'm not convinced that Jason ran into drug dealers either, but I find it at least as unlikely that simply driving while high caused him to abandon his belongings, disrobe, and run off into the cold night on the edge of nowhere.

I'm surprised the private investigators didn't settle onto a much more simple and likely explanation supporting the foul play theory: Snapchat is often used by drug dealers as a means of selling due to the temporary (self-expiring) and private nature of snapchat's messages. They use sequences of emojis to denote drug name availabilities. That said, an alternative and much more likely foul play theory would be that the victim switched over to snapchat for the location information of the so called deal. Perhaps he intentionally went this direction knowing this was a common area for the sale of drugs and he referred to snaphat for the details on what drugs were available, their prices, and the location of the sale. He drove out to a secluded area where he believed the exchange was to occur and he was met with trouble. A number of things could explain the car wreckage and him missing: - he was attempting to flee when he crashed. - he was carjacked. - he was kidnapped. - he was murdered and dropped somewhere else. - his body was hidden and/or wild hogs happened on his body and destroyed the evidence. - he was waiting for dealers and got messed up on drugs and then proceeded to do as you've suggested: gone hog wild in a drug induced state and spirited himself away. Just because the drugs weren't missing from his bag doesn't mean no one else was involved. Perhaps the people he met with were (surprise) not that intelligent or thought what he had wasn't all that valuable. Perhaps they were after something else entirely and the drug offering was only a ruse. Maybe they just wanted the money on his person. Maybe they were sex traffickers hoping to get unsuspecting young people or women. The list of possibilities is endless.

I've been smoking weed for about 30 years now, and never once did it make me want to take off all my clothes and run into the freezing darkness. I understand paranoia, but this is too much. Mamajuana just doesn't have that strong of an effect by itself. He'd have to be doing something else to get that disoriented. I may not be a mental health expert, but I'm quite experienced when it comes to drug fueled stupidity. This isn't that. Something else happened to this kid that isn't explained by his marijuana use.

Once again, this analysis makes so much sense! And once again the failings of law enforcement officials at the time made a bad situation worse! The repercussions of the pandemic continue to manifest themselves in many varied and distressing ways. Jason's mental health, and subsequent drug use, apparently led to a series of illogical and dangerous decisions. The focus on blaming anonymous "others" rather than the victim also seems to be a coping method that is a very common response. Heartbreaking all around. Dr. Grande's analysis is insightful, compassionate and logical- as always! Once again, I wish his comments regarding police procedures could be included in law enforcement training sessions! Brilliant analysis- thank you!❤

I've smoked weed almost every day for over 10 years. When you first start smoking, yeah, you get really tripped out. But if you're going to have a psychotic break from Marijuana, it would almost never happen to someone who is a stoner and smokes regularly. You realize what psychedelics do and don't work for you pretty quickly and most people wouldn't be chain smoking weed if it didn't make them feel good, so I really don't think this was drug induced psychosis. Did they even test it to see if it was laced?

I remember a similar story several years ago. A young couple went to a party and were given an unfamiliar drug. When they left they were stopped by police. The police noted they were on the wrong side of town if they were going home and left after telling them how to get back on the correct route. Eventually they stopped near a field, called 911 and said they were being attacked by Indians. Despite being told to stay in the car, they fled in fear. Months later the girl was found in the bottom of an empty silo in which she had apparently taken shelter in an effort to hide from the Indians while the boy ended up being found in a snow bank during the spring thaw. Very sad story. Reports indicated that neither had a history of drug use.

Similar enough to the Maura Murray case to merit comparison. You never know what's going on in a person's life, what they are running from, what they are consuming or what they are thinking. Furthermore, if you come from an area that's built up and heavily populated then it's hard to imagine how the elements and wildlife can consume, literally and metaphorically, a person swiftly.

@@nmartin5551 Agreed, you never know how dangerous nature is or what can happen in an instance. I was cycling in a rural, but not too remote, Bavarian forest and got lost. I was literally going around in circles for a couple of hours, add in panic and it can get dangerous. A friend of mine got lost for nine hours in the New Forest in the UK whilst on his honeymoon. Local police found him eventually and told him it was not uncommon. Throw in temperature extremes and/'or snow and I can see many untrained people literally disappearing. And then animals will consume you, never to be found.

I agree with your analyses and the drugs got the better of him. He must have been consuming drugs throughout his trip and eventually he experienced a delusional disorder situation. Just why would the police abandon the obviously unusual scene???

@@clanAnd123 Right on! These people don't understand the difference between weed (the canister) and really debilitating, stealing desperate addiction vs. what this guy was used to; but maybe lockdown/availability over doing it. Anything else was never observed, reported/probably would have been detected by his parents/school/friends and in their car before leaving to see them and his siblings. Everyone knows about DNA, including psychopaths, and clothes on the ground for days or even hrs. makes the police work a lot easier because every bit of it is compromised to the point of not bothering. If he hurt his head in the front end "accident" I'd be surprised. No deflated air bag, and able to disrobe, down to his last protection, then "wandering away", means some parts of his brain were working, if one believes he was all alone throughout. People commute many miles a day using the right formula of pot and never have a problem, accident. Some stranger/hitchhiker offering something else unfamiliar could make him so addled he crashed the front end, but not enough to intentionally back up and really damage the rear; another vehicle involved, I'm guessing, or other person in his? Father took pics of tire marks long after the fact; useless and police just too sure of themselves (no doubt on a short budget in a drug problem area). But I'd hope parents/their lawyer/friend would look at the public record for any pattern, other instances of disappearances in a 100+ mile area..

My less plausible theory is he may have had a head injury either from the crash or falling after the crash and regained consciousness in late stage hypothermia. At that point paradoxical undressing can occur because people in that condition think they're hot strip off and head for a water source. As for the cause of the crash he could have fallen asleep at the wheel or realized he was lost and tried to use his phone and drive simultaneously.
