This somewhat reminds me of a missing person case from my home town in the California desert from over 40 years ago. A man named Rod Harris who worked with my Dad used to go fishing in nearby Lake Isabella. Its a man made lake that is regularly stocked with fish. You can sometimes go there and be the only person fishing, other times its packed with people. Rod went fishing one Saturday and was the only person on the lake. Later that day, someone found his fishing boat upside down in the lake, but Rod was nowhere to be found. This was in 1977 and even today his body has never been found. I was only 13 at the time and went to school with his kids. Half the people in town think Rod staged his drowning and started a new life elsewhere. Easy to do back then. But, he had a good family and a happy life (or so it seemed). If he was having an affair it would have been hard to hide in a town that small. But then again, how did he capsize his fishing boat as skilled as he was at fishing. It makes no sense. You would think by now someone would have found him or his body. He was finally pronounced dead in 1978. These stories always bother me because the families never really have closure

Omg! We used to fish there too! The best bait was refrigerated bits of bean and velveeta cheese burritos! (I grew up in CA too, but I don’t remember this story. I hope Dr Grande does an upload on it. It’s seems inappropriate to wish you a happy new year under the circumstances of this topic, but I really do wish you a happy new year!

@@shellydesormier4646 God only knows what happened to him. At this point, fish eating him wouldn’t be out of the question. Let me add that the Kern County sheriff back in the 1970s weren’t exactly a stellar law enforcement agency.

@@Randy.E.R I understand, back then there was hardly a cohesive LE agency anywhere and they didn’t have computers to aid them. Most LE were still as antiquated as old western sheriffs with their sometimes posses and a rope. A person could easily get themself lost or eaten by fish without anyone having a clue.

Theory only:Adult onset schizophrenia with first episodes of psychotic breaks and perhaps mania. Jason tried to self medicate his MH symptoms via street drug usage. His paranoid impulse to hide coupled with being young and physically fit made recovery of his body difficult due to his ability to travel far from the crash site until he was exhausted and succumbed to the elements. Foraging animals far from the presumed but incorrect search area will make it even more difficult to recover any remains.

It's possible that his clothing was discarded because he became hypothermic in the 30° weather. At a certain point in the process, hypothermia makes you feel very warm, and people often take off layers of clothing in an attempt to cool down, which of course only accelerates the process of freezing to death. This is something we see in the Dyatlov Pass incident.

There’s a picture in the video of the car running in the ditch. And it was only barely below freezing. So he got his car stuck in the ditch and left the heated interior to stand outside the car for hours at which point he undressed and wandered off? Doesn’t make sense. Paradoxical undressing happens because your body will start to feel like it’s burning from the cold, and your brain is too close to dying to think rationally. It doesn’t happen the second a cold breeze hits your neck. It’s *late* stage hypothermia, as in when you’re already essentially dead. I know it was said the rear window was smashed, but be realistic, are you gonna leave the sheltered interior to stand on the side of a dirt road? And if the heat was still working in the car it’s going to be better to sit there with the vents aimed at you then to sit on the side of the road. And my impression was the clothes were next to the car, not as if he had been trying to walk out for hours and finally the cold got him.

When my mother was growing up, she lived on her grandfather's farm. A nearby neighbor was a pig farmer who mysteriously disappeared. Nobody saw him leave his property or in town. His vehicle was parked in it's usual spot. His house, where he lived alone, was not locked. Then, one of the searchers found a single button from his overalls in the pig's trough. They theorized that he had suffered some medical condition that either rendered him unconscious or instantly ended his life. They believed that his pigs consumed him after he collapsed into their food trough. Jason's body disappearing in this way is plausible. It's sad because, if this is truly what happened, there will never be any trace of him that will be found.

SUCH a great point about the function of/value in assigning blame in situations like this. The human brain's inability to tolerate "open loops" is so great that creating a version of the story in which there's someone to blame feels like a requirement. Then that created story feels more logical to more people over time than the truth of "we may never know." It's such a fascinating spiral! As always, loved your analysis and your commitment to -- in this case -- some hog-tied humor. ;) I wonder if someday you might analyze the 2015 case of Chelsea Martinez & Jason Nisbit? They met online and arranged to meet in person. She: suicidal. He: cannibal-curious. I'd LOVE your take on the plentiful converging psychological and legal issues this one created.

I don't think of it as an "open loop" as much as believing you know your child/loved one better than anyone else; that justice is so elusive for many more people in this world than not, so many unreported/undiscovered murders and disappearances (ask law enforcement, not to mention priests who won't answer but know, the ones you never hear about outnumber by far the ones you do). It's more about wanting them BACK (in any likely and devastated form).If murdered the perp might reveal where they are for a deal; justice for the deceased, and the need to survive it all w/o perishing from soul-destroying worry and mourning. Also, what's up w/switching at the critical moment in directions to Snap-Chat? Or wanting to die from exposure by stripping? And why break the back window? (Damage to rear end doesn't look as if the original cause of crash damage to the front would have caused that heavier damage in the rear bust, as if he was struck there 1st, or followed, he lost control, then someone smashed into the back, and harder? A bad drug "trip" doesn't seem likely when heading for home and family in his parents' vehicle (better safe to do it in his room at school or parents' house and better for the youngest, more sensitive and maybe a little more favored child, I'm speculating). Not looking for blame in others, so much as wanting their loved one BACK. (Parents profession/music and his looks/reported character speak to a guess he was caring, thoughtful of his siblings and them, wouldn't ever want to give pain/suffering even in a dazed, drug addled stupor and car accident. Likewise, when it comes to the onus of drugs/suicide, his parents, father in a professional side bar often would have to deal with it (unfaithful wife, depressed, abused, sad/lost reasons for suicide) in his congregation/community. (Obviously this son didn't feel too worried about being (smoke) detected at home...?); and both parents, in our times, would know how to deal with overdoses/murder. It's a fact ministers deal with these issues in the most personal way in both instances. And another fact: more people more murderers, and the chance of finding where the victims are so difficult. More about prayers answered, and HOPE than looking for a scapegoat, in my humble opinion (and experience)...and as S. King writes, "...hope is a good thing", no?😥🧖🌻

I recently starting diving into the Maura Murray case again, which I do on occasion, and decided to take a look at the Jason Landry case after I saw someone compare the two cases. Not that he was saying they were connected or anything like that, just that there were a lot of similarities - both college students, cars abandoned after accidents in unexpected places which could not really be explained, alcohol/substance may be involved, and both vanished quickly and have never been seen or heard from again - Maura 20 years in 2024. I think in both cases, a more immediate serious search effort could have been useful. Anyway, I was glad to see you did an analysis of Jason's case, Dr. Grande, (I know you did one on Maura too), this is the best analysis I've seen on it, imo. I think your theory is the most likely, that Jason was alone, in the midst of some sort of psychotic break or something, perhaps suffering from a paranoid episode, and there may be, unfortunately, little or nothing to find at this time. Also, good point about how people like to have someone else to blame. I don't know what happened though and will hold out hope for some answers in this case and, most of all, peace for his loving family.

Dr Grande's explanation is not really that far off initial LE's assessment. Basically he was under the influence, went the wrong way, crashed, and then wandered off to his death (both dazed by the accident and due to the drugs). Only thing is Dr. Grande isn't stupid like the police who just left the scene and didn't bother looking for him or collecting evidence. They got the scenario right, they just prioritised getting donuts or something, over doing any police work thereafter. The later theories of volunteer "investigators" and "the community" is just nonsense people made up to explain things without blaming the guy--exactly what Grande says here too. That "theory" is so far fetched it's not funny but people are just blinded by the need to "explain" the disappearance by some sinister plot or people, and is reinforced by the fact that his body was never found.

Once again, this analysis makes so much sense! And once again the failings of law enforcement officials at the time made a bad situation worse! The repercussions of the pandemic continue to manifest themselves in many varied and distressing ways. Jason's mental health, and subsequent drug use, apparently led to a series of illogical and dangerous decisions. The focus on blaming anonymous "others" rather than the victim also seems to be a coping method that is a very common response. Heartbreaking all around. Dr. Grande's analysis is insightful, compassionate and logical- as always! Once again, I wish his comments regarding police procedures could be included in law enforcement training sessions! Obsessing about it leads observers to pass it off as delusional since in most cases it is. While, on the other hand, there's so many people in the world, a few will be right and have a real reason to be alarmed/obsessive and frightened. If only they would keep it to themselves, realize its going to happen one way or the other, and sooner or later! I could believe that they probably got him after whatever lead him to drive off course, get out of his car & run on foot but, that's the ultimate mystery, isn't it? His car didn't seem like it was attacked by wild boars. I'm not discounting a carjacking gone wrong (if this is in fact a high crime area in a small town, idk). The best theory I've read in these comments is it could have been a bad trip but, not from regular weed, rather something like salvia. I've seen people act ridiculous after just a couple hits of that stuff. And the person said feeling overheated is a main side effect. Hence, him undressing as he was running from invisible bad people. If there are woods around there, he could have found some tight, out of sight place to squeeze into & hide & succumb to the elements if it was ~30 degrees like the doctor said. Is there a lot of forest in the area where his car was found? Did they do a foot search? Or is it that dangerous due to the hogs?

One would think but it's not uncommon. Hit some trees at a good rate of speed on an unpaved surface and the car will spin causing damage to the rear. Look where the car was found, the largest tree in the picture was off the rear of the car in perfect position to knock off the rear bumper.

Not odd. He didn't really crash "forward" into the trees as in a head-on collision. His front bumper is only damaged at the *side* , meaning he basically drove into something which started as a side-frontal impact--damage to the front fender, wheel, and rocker area. Upon impact he probably started steering the other way but the gravel and the fact that's probably partially off-road (low traction) meant the vehicle's rear end slid out and then hit more stuff. The rear damage is similar to the front. The bumper came off but not as a result of rear impact...the rear bumper is still on the car in the accident, it was removed later as a result of towing or at the tow yard. The rear was also a side impact that crumpled in the rear quarter and was enough to shatter the backlight. Note the rear of the car is actually resting against the tree it hit in the at-scene photo. There's also visible tree/brush branches inside on the rear deck which entered after the backlight shattered. It's all very consistent with that type of accident.

@nomadscavenger
@nomadscavenger 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rico_G ...as your slamming on the brakes? I've done this, but damage to the rear wasn't nearly so bad. Spinning also slows it down. Now fishtailing and accelerating to get back control, then front crashing would indicate he wasn't all that impaired, but fighting to "get control" and maybe from whom? So the large tree nearby was rammed going backwards? A fight inside the vehicle could have been a cause. It's not reasonable to me to be speeding fast enough to lose control on a deserted unfamiliar road, evidently lost, and slamming the front, only to have the back much worse damaged. Father's photos came days after the fact? The police were too quick, peculiarly so, not to seriously investigate immediately. The person could have been hurt, brain damaged, having a stroke and LOST, as they realized, and they left? That area may have a reputation. And it's likely some of their local politicians/business owners use pot, so no excuse there not to take it seriously. Is the-devil-may-care attitude because they were able to see he wasn't a local? If a sick twist hitchhiker recognized a young, sympathetic, "privileged" pot head, the name and address on registration/license would be a practical trophy for future reference if out for an accidental thrill that night, but maybe a planned one for the future, no? I'm hoping it wasn't anyone else that brought a sad end to this guy, but damage to the parents car/drugs like pot just don't seem a strong enough motive to do what he supposedly did alone.

Unanswered question: why did he embark on a journey home at 10:30 pm planning to arrive at 1:00 am in the morning? That opens the possibility, along with the erroneous turn, that he was planning an excursion along the way. Perhaps there is something to this or maybe there is nothing to it. But it is a valid question. I also partly agree with the stated assertion that the police were less than diligent in the search because of their assumption that the car and belongings were from a drug user and of less worth. I do believe the situation was discounted by the police but not because of undervaluing the victim's life. I suspect that the area of the occurrence is a well-known area of drug transactions and other crimes and drug use and the police are accustomed to seeing a lot of unexplained, weird stuff in this remote area and thought that this was one of those times. They anticipated that the car's owner would show sooner or later to retrieve it. It's not a valid excuse, but a possible explanation.

Need to know the operating condition of the heater in his car and whether or not he was driving with windows down. Jason was severely underdressed for the cold temperatures. Hypothermia can cause confusion, loss of coordination, hallucinations, and paradoxical undressing. Alcohol and drug use can speed up the loss of body temperature. Jason could have crashed due to hypothermia if his heater wasn’t in use and wandered away, stripping off his clothes. Alternatively, he could have temporarily lost consciousness due to the crash and become hypothermic and then wandered off. There wasn’t a lot of time between the crash and the police discovery of the scene though.
