I met George in 1986. The first time I talked to him we sat and talked backstage at a show he was doing at Northwestern University for 2 hours. I was struck by how intelligent he was, and also how serious he was. Off stage, he was not a clown, he was a real Thinker. He really hated "stupid" cultural things, and he knew that even though it was the fodder for his comedy, it represented real world issues. He felt tht it was his job to point out our stupidity in a way we would accept. He was brilliant, and he was kind, though many didn't think he was "nice". He wasn't. Being nice, in his mind, was the opposite of being kind. I miss him.

One of the most prominent figures in the evolution of Comedy. This was a show he was doing much later, but he first became a big sensation in the 70s I believe. His most famous one is called seven dirty words, and it complains about how impossible it is to figure out what you're allowed to say and what you're not allowed to say on the air. And he makes fun of our values about why certain words are bad.

Considering his personality and the times we are talking about, he was probably only getting harsher because he could get away with more as time went. And as restrictions loosened, in part because of Carlin himself, he could get away with more.

George was so great. I saw him around 10 times or so live. One time I was laughing so hard that I almost went into convulsions & had sore ribs after the show! Richard Pryor had the same effect on me when I saw him live. " They " would probably try to cancel George in these times & I do think that he would not even GAF! His observations on humanity & especially Americans were so spot on!

Jamestown, New York has the National Comedy center and you will find there the family donated collection of George Carlin comedy notes and material. Huge amount of Comedians shown in this Center including Lucille Ball. Celoron and Jamestown New York is where she came from and is now buried. You can't experience all in one day. George was awesome!

As a boomer approaching 70, I would advise you to check out more of Carlin's clips. The American Dream and Flying on The Airlines are also good, and just about anything else. He was a genius who was way ahead of his time. He actually started his career in the 50's, when I was just a lad. I beieve not only his subject matter, but his uncanny means of delivery are what made him so good! Check him out and enjoy!

Most of his best stand up was in the 80s to early 2000s (he died in 2008) and it just as relative now as it was then, there will never be another George Carlin

He was doing cutting-edge material in the 70s but mostly on his record albums or FM radio, after the cultural dam burst in the late 60s. His tv appearances were more tame of necessity, so theyre uneven in quality but he was steadily honing his act in front of a mass audience. Along with Richard Pryor, he expanded the boundaries of tv comedy so that by the 80s there were virtually no limits on the material you could perform on cable tv or film, and only slightly tighter restrictions on broadcast tv (like SNL). In the 90s came the internet and the sky was the limit.

Carlin died in 2008, just before smartphones and social media really got going. Considering how annoyed he was by one-hour photo-finishing and camcorders, I figure he must be spinning in his grave at the state of things now, poor guy!

As one who cut his teeth as a 14 year-old back in the early 70's on George Carlin's LP (vinyl) comedy albums, I can't recommend it vigorously enough that you (as someone so young as to not have heard of him) that a deep dive is definitely in order! Do check out at least one of his comedy albums. Especially, one out of the 70's or 80's. A taste of what I speak could be 'I Love My Dog', 'Seven Words (you can't say on television)', 'The Hair Piece', 'Welcome to My Job' and 'White Harlem'. It makes me laugh just to think of a few titles here for you! 😏🤣

The funny thing is I have a cowboy hat that I wear every day. It belonged to my uncle. No hate to George for that joke. I still laugh my ass off. Then again I worked on a dairy farm for 3 years during high school so I have been a lot closer to cows than the demographic George is talking about.

Gen Z will never know how epic that man was. I was so glad that I got to see him on his last tour in 2004. That man has no filter and it’s refreshing AF still today as it was way back. I’m glad you enjoyed this and watch more - I suggest the advertisement lullaby and the classic 7 words you can’t say on tv and for anyone who still doesn’t know George Carlin -- he was Rufus in Bill & Ted Excellent Adventure & Bogus Journey.
