Imagine hearing this when it came out. We used to skip school every time Rush released an album. We would go to the diner for breakfast, head to the record shop and buy the album, get stoned and listen to it in someone’s living room while their parents were out at work. Our minds were blown. Because then, nobody knew Rush. They were what we thought was our own private band. I saw hemispheres live in 1979 at the Palladium in NYC with 2,000 people and year after year the crowds got larger and larger and suddenly they were everyone’s band. Rush fans are a rare breed. I’m so happy to see you guys loving this. Welcome.

I feel any Rush song should be listened to 3 times. Once concentrate on guitar then bass and finally drums. There is so much going on that it's impossible to catch it all. You're listening to a mind melting Lifeson solo meanwhile Ged's just casually laying down one of the greatest bass lines ever and Neil's doing unreal things on the drums.
@ddgallion5 жыл бұрын
3 times to start - LOL. Maybe the first time just to let the music wash over and thru you. Then revisit and focus on each instrument / member. Then with further times through noting the progressions, time signature changes, and layering of themes, rhythms, ... it goes on and on. Stunning in its beauty, amazing in its musicianship, and breathtaking in its complexity.

It’s even harder live. Every time I have seen them in concert (every tour since Permanent Waves, 1980), I don’t know who I want to watch during most songs. I once saw Alex and Geddy being interviewed by Steven Colbert. He asked them, "Have you ever written a song so long that you influenced yourself?". they laughed, and told the story of trying to do this song in a single take in the studio, and they kept messing it up. Boys, as Canadians, we always revisit this argument and my take on it is: Tom Sawyer is a classic. It can be played on the radio and it jives. It shows their capability as musicians. But dude, La Villa Strangiato shows a whole new world (Non-radio, thank you) and Neil, Geddy and Alex just play their heart out musically. It's why this is by far my favourite Rush tune. So yeah boys, although Rush has a lot of AWESOME tunes, THIS is the best. Much love to you both for throwing out these kick-ass vids.

La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise in Self-Indulgence) I. Buenas Noches, Mein Froinds! (0:00-0:26) II. To sleep, perchance to dream... (0:27-1:59) III. Strangiato Theme (2:00-3:15) IV. A Lerxst in Wonderland (3:16-5:48) V. Monsters! (5:49-6:09) VI: The Ghost of the Aragon (6:10-6:44) VII. Danforth and Pape (6:45-7:25) VIII. The Waltz of the Shreves (7:26-7:51) IX. Never turn your back on a Monster! (7:52-8:02) X. Monsters! (Reprise) (8:03-8:16) XI. Strangiato Theme (Reprise) (8:17-9:20) XII. A Farewell to Things (9:20-9:37) Thanks for doing this song guys. This is one of the best songs ever written by any band anywhere. In my opinion of course.

I remember listening to this song, and when it was over realized the door bell was ringing like crazy and somone was pounding on the door. It was by buddy, saying how he had been trying to get my attention since just after the song started. We didn't use headphones much.

The great thing about Rush is it's fun to listen to the studio and then go back and listen to a live version and the live version be better than the studio. The version of this from Exit... This was the first song I had ever heard where a "True" guitarist took me on a journey through his playing. EVERYTHING Rush does makes me appreciate drums...and bass...and guitar - they are just that kind of band! Great reaction guys (particularly loved Alex's sh!t eating grin the entire time, and your eyes bugging out of your head!). Indeed, this is a monumental instrumental, and it too certainly cemented my love for this insane power trio! Where to go from here, you ask?! My #1 Rush tune is 2112 (all 20+ minutes of it) - I liken it to Rush's version of 'Echoes' - it's an epic journey! For more of a synth ride, I'd HIGHLY recommend Subdivisions (and definitely pay attention to the lyrics on this one!). Other key notables: Mystic Rhythms, Animate, Headlong Flight, The Main Monkey Business, The Garden, Red Sector A, Losing It, Earthshine - all these and so much more need to be listened to! A thought for a 'fun' reaction vid. There are 3 songs that form part of what is called the 'Fear' trilogy - Neil wrote about 3 aspects of the human condition (negative ones), one is 'The Enemy Within' (how your fears can cripple you - from Grace Under Pressure, it's Part 1), next is 'The Weapon' (fear of external enemies - from Signals, Part 2), and then there is 'Witch Hunt' (about how mob mentality fear can be used to control the populace - from Moving Pictures, Part 3). It was released in reverse order. Doesn't really matter how you play it, but it's a must! Each song is killer! Enjoy the Rush journey gents!!

I'll be 50 next year. Started with Rush at age 15. Not stopping now. Neil can play the damn spoons. Get them on stage again. Someone call Ray D. and make it happen. Do it in Neil's backyard so he doesnt have to travel. ANYthing!

When I was a teen my friend lent me a couple of Rush albums (pre Internet days). I’ve been hooked ever since.

OMG this is great!!! I haven't really listened to Rush before, don't know why but now I regret it. But thank you for sharing this gem Alex. I learned to appreciate drums from Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, the songs When the Levee Breaks and Fool in the Rain and his epic solo Moby Dick

Oh my god there's kitty on your bed! Sweet kitty! I listen to the bass in Rush songs more than the drums. Possibly because I'm a bassist

1986, I was 16 and newly in love with Rush, and drums. I bought "Drum Techniques of Rush" from Manny's Music in NYC (48th street!). Reading the music while listening made it so much more real. Natural Science would be a good out there reaction video. I'm a Rush Lifer. They will record again. Keep the faith. ✌

This is the best rock instrumental ever. Great choice! Glad you enjoyed it! If you liked this one, check out "Natural Science".

Finally, more Rush! 😎🎸🤪 I love watching you react - so expressive - I can tell you guys feel the music! Watch Neil’s drum solo at the end of YYZ! That video got all over the early music sharing apps and seeing him at work adds another level! Another is early live performances of 2112 when those guys were so obviously high while in concert - watching him is crazy! One Little Victory might be the most intense drumming in a Rush song. Circumstances is a cool kind of chaos on drums, but more bass mixed in...

awesome guys. again, lessons is still my all time fav RUSH song. not as epic as what you just heard but still "RUSH"

If you were a drummer in college and you could play this whole thing serviceably, you were something special and you were at the top of your class...and your peers agreed.

Great reaction! Best tracks for me, can not put them in order (sure I forget some too): Xanadu Yyz Red Barchetta Tom Sayer Spirit of the radio La Villa Strangiato Free Will The Trees Jacobs Ladder Closer to the heart Passage to Bangkok Lakeside park If it is on Exit Stage Left, then that is better version than studio. Its ok to listen studio versions first. They are simpler - like for La Villa Strangiato, they tried to record it like 40 times, and were not satisfied. They gave up. In ESL you can hear, what this song became, after a few years of touring. This is true for several Rush songs, and reason why they are considered live band. Their material is complicated and took even them time to fully master. To exaggerate, studio versions could be called drafts. Xanadu is a great example. Studio version is great, but it is not there yet. Don't get me wrong, studio version gets 10/10, but ESL version is pure magic. There is not one note that is not serving the song as a whole. After Moving Pictures things got different. Be warned!

Tom Sawyer is why I started playing drums. After work, I sit and jam all of Moving pictures to keep my chops up. It never gets old after 25yrs. I still feel like I'm hearing it for the first time every time I play. It gives me chills every time. Exit Stage Left is all time favorite. La Villa and Freewill. Also check Cygnus-X-1. Another one that never gets old. Rush is timeless, and more than a band. They are a lifestyle, and a soundtrack to life. Sooo many great songs, and Im happy to see you younger lads finding these gems. Continue to spread the wealth...

I'll bet that I'm the only one to request this but I fell like you would both appreciate it. It's off of 1975's Caress Of Steel album. "The Fountain of Lamneth" It's 20min long. (That's a good thing)

Growing up in the 1970s, the songs Tank and Toccata by Emerson Lake and Palmer made me appreciate drums being played as a lead instrument, then being introduced to Rush in the late 70s was icing on the cake.

'85 for me, ESL's drum solo was love at first sight, and we're still married! Great first Rush album. I equate hearing Exit in the 80s to hearing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. So many musicians created.
