Raph's is "Should You Give Career Advice?"

There are two types of mail: mail you're expecting and mail that just showed up. Examples of mail you're expecting: your renewed car registration, the bill from your doctor visit last month, your W-2 form. Keep those. You probably already know how to deal with them. Any mail that just showed up--toss it. If it's really important, whoever sent it will send it again when you don't reply. If it's not, there's no need to keep it. Unless you get a letter from the IRS you weren't expecting. In that case, get a lawyer right away, you're going to need one.

Sounds like an explanation of benefits, I got a few of those recently. It says how much your insurance paid so you feel good about them, but it just annoys you instead. More than half the time they paid 100% of what's on the bill & when they don't you can't pay your deductible using the explanation of benefits; you need to wait until the real bill shows up that again tells you how much your insurance already paid.

My advice is to define cycles in your life. For example, a year might be a cycle for lots of things you have. If you find something that you haven't used for a full cycle, and you don't have any immediate or immediately foreseeable use for it, you objectively don't need it, and can throw it out.

For that paperwork, way I see it is if a bill is more than two years old it's safe to shred. Way I see it, either there should be one floating around that's newer than that with a more up-to-date balance, or they stopped trying to get the money from you and you don't have to pay them anymore. Similar idea for receipts and packing slips, since they pretty much can't be returned or disputed by that point anyways.
