You're right that chocolate shouldn't have gluten in it, but a lot of processed foods do contain wheat derived additives, even if the product itself wouldn't usually contain wheat; so I do understand people asking "is this gluten free' about seemingly weird foods.

My mother was persuaded that going gluten-free could be beneficial by some kind of a nutritionist (which, by the way, is not a doctor or a Registered Ditetitan Nutritionist , any asshole can call themselves a nutritionist which really means that for all she knew, I, as a high school junior at the time who had taken AP Bio could have had more formal education on the subject than this person since they literally don't have to have any formal training or have even attended college) and it seemed like a lot of the food was made on unsafe equitment

I've dealt with every single one of this people in the 15 years that have passed since I was diagnosed. Some people are really nice and they try to understand the condition and how it affects you if you eat gluten. Whereas others... oh my, I once had a baker tell me that I could probably use cake flour because it has a very low gluten content and a little wouldn't damage me. I explained to him that even the tiniest particle of gluten triggers an immune reaction on my intestines but still "oh but it's just a little". Another time when I was around 10 years old, it was Easter and everybody at home was eating chocolate eggs that contained gluten. I of course didn't have any of it, but I didn't mind, I didn't feel bad or left out (ok, maybe a little sad) and so my dad told me +"come on, have some, it's not gonna harm you" I replied -"don't worry dad it's okay and you know I can't eat this" +"it's just a little" -"I won't!" And so on, until I convinced him that I was okay with it. My own dad guys. I could write more about this but my comment would be endless. This is a very real disease that nowadays is luckily getting the awareness and respect it deserves. Just because you don't see the effects doesn't mean it isn't real or bad. I'm not sorry for the long comment. If you read up to this point, here, have some gf snacks 🍟🍿🍎🧀

If a restaurant states they have "gluten free"... for reasons of false advertising, they had better truly have gluten free. That means a small dedicated surface with separate tools to prepare food. People with issues to gluten react differently... It takes years to get diagnosed. It is not cool that a person who knows nothing of the disease or the individual persons symptoms to have such an opinion that they know gluten will effect them or not. Just so you are aware, if a person who eats gluten who has gluten problems... you may just make them ill for weeks. It is the "idiot" who has fed someone gluten products and thinks it is a joke.

SquirellDisciple I had a Buddhist instructor who said that gluten will weigh down the body and the sugars from gluten would cause stress or something. But if you exclude it you can lower mental and emotional instability. I love bread and still eat it, but I respect that she's not the type to fight about gluten free everything. But then again we have a variety of places that have gluten free options for those who are sensitive or seeking to slim their waist but curing back on carbs.

Ok so I was like 9, and a popular kid in my class was having a birthday party, so not being stupid I went. When I got there they had cake, pizza, bread sticks, mini sandwiches, and those little pastries you eat with tea, all which have gluten. Then the kids mom asked if I didn't like pizza, and I told her about my celiac disease, after about 3-4 minutes of taking she said so you can't eat? That was the first time I ever explained myself. I'll stick with " i don't like food............................

Imagine what the skeptic thinks about mental health problems and neirodivergence. I have ADHD and encounter skeptics all the time. Come to think of it, this sketch would work great for ADHD too. You have *the skeptic* who doesn’t “believe” in ADHD and thinks you need to “just try harder”. They’ll probably also say something about parents not being strict enough and how when they were a kid ADHD was treated with a belt and daydreaming wasn’t a disorder blah blah blah. You have *the self-diagnoser* who is convinced they also have ADHD because they sometimes procrastinate a bit. You have *the druggie* who wants your adderall. You have *the mystic healer* who wants to “fix” you with crystals and herbs, they’ll be appalled to find out you take adderall. And finally you have the *relentless optimist* who is determined to convince you your disorder is actually a superpower. They’ll also be appalled to find out you take meds because they’ll think that means you’re robbing yourself of your “true self”.

Top three things that suck about having Celiac Disease: 1) gluten free things are really expensive and a lot of times crap- ex. earlier at the store, a box of four gluten free muffins was $7. They were the only gluten free muffins in the store. 2) I grew up with it, which meant celebrating birthdays literally sucked. I couldn't eat cake or cupcakes or basically anything their parents would bring in. 3) There have been dozens of times when I've been extremely hungry, maybe didn't eat all day, and was promised lunch, and the lunch is something I can't have like pizza. Then, I'm starving, and I have to watch everyone around me eat pizza.

Not as restricting but I grew up with food allergies and can relate to much of what you say. I can't even imagine what it must be like to be able to actually eat stuff at birthday parties. I remember when a neighbour brought in home-made cupcakes for my birthday, she didn't want to say what was in them bc it was her super "secret recipe" yet expected me to eat them???? Like, normal people can actually eat something without knowing exactly what's in it? That's crazy.

Why do people have a problem with gluten free? They don't have to eat it. I can't have anything with a lot of citric acid, so no oranges, lemons, kiwi fruit, etc. Nobody badmouths me for refusing a dessert because it has orange slices in it. Just live and let live.

Most of the time it is fine - occasionally you get someone who acts as if you are deliberately doing this to make their life harder, or to get attention. I hate having to ask about whats gluten free because then it does feel like I am asking for special attention, so I prefer to go to places that have gluten free options on the menu so I can pretend to be normal -or my boyfriend makes light hearted jokes about how he would like the same thing as me "but with the gluten please"

beeveearr I'm sorry that you feel self-conscious about asking for gluten free stuff, that's not fair on you at all. Good that your boyfriend's on board tho! I would hope most places have gluten-free stuff readily available on the menu nowadays, it is 2015, nearly 2016 after all.

So I have celiac disease and in elementary school we would always have kids bring snacks to school for their birthdays or teachers would give kids with good grades donuts, etc. a Kids with allergies would have snacks at the teachers desk so they could eat something when the other kids did. Anyways one day we’re we’re doing this worksheet and the teacher brought in donuts. She said everyone got one and you could have two if you got everything right. I got everything right so I came over to get my kids gluten free donut , and I asked for two. My teacher looked st me like I was crazy and said, “well you don’t need two” and I mean it wasn’t a heinous offense or anything but, it really bothered me. My parents had provided the snacks at the beginning of the year so it wasn’t like I was taking her money, I could see there were at least six donuts there, and my gluten free donuts were a half as big as the wheat ones anyways

There are three levels, sensitivity, intolerance and allergy. Allergy (celiac disease) is actually dangerous and is triggered off the any gluten contamination. Intolerance is like celiac disease except it doesn't try to kill you! Basically the gluten cannot be digested and makes the person sick without an allergic reaction, minor cross contamination won't cause any harm. Sensitivity is basically intolerance with some wiggle room. People sensitive to gluten can eat small amounts of gluten without side effects but eating more than their body can handle will make them sick.

+Jessica Smith Actually, there's two levels. Allergy (celiac disease), and intolerance - which doesn't even make you sick, so much, it just makes it hard for you to poo - which is like being sick, because constipation definitely makes you feel unwell, I guess. Gluten sensitivity isn't a thing. The guy who did the study that offered a suggestion it might be went back and did more studies on it because he felt it seemed a bit... odd, and he found that there was no actual evidence that gluten sensitivity is an actual thing.

@Anonymous Anonymous "From what we know" -- no, we don't know any of that. In fact, what we actually know is that the 2019-nCoV virus crossed over from bats in late (November or December) 2019. There's a bat virus which is 96% similar to it, which seems like a much more likely origin than an 80% similar virus in some lab.
@TheMoocow2009
@TheMoocow2009 4 жыл бұрын
@Anonymous Anonymous What report are you talking about? Everything I've found brings up how the Five Eyes network specifically thinks the virus was not from a lab. China has been trying to claim the US made the virus, but that's just because they want claim it has nothing to do with China at all. You keep bringing up 80% similarity, but a bunch of coronaviruses are all about that similar to each other. Again, when you look at the 90%+ similarity ones, they're all bat coronaviruses. You also keep implying China was studying this particular coronavirus before the outbreak, which they weren't. They were studying similar ones for the exact reason that they were concerned there could be another outbreak (SARS also came from bats). Stop spreading bullshit conspiracy theories.

@Anonymous Anonymous Dude... China doesn't have a vaccine, let alone 2, they are continuing to deny they created the virus while trying to cover up the extent of its spread, the Five Eyes (a joint intelligence agency) doesn't just take China's word for things, and all of the original original patients were linked to the wet markets in Wuhan, and about half the "evidence" you've mentioned are internet rumors that are almost certainly hoaxes. Everything you say is wrong, and it doesn't help that you keep shifting your position. "The Five Eyes say it was deliberately made by China!" "No, they said it wasn't." "Well they're wrong!". It's not even worth talking to you about this.

EbonMaster Actually the problem is that companies put the "gluten free" tag on foods that still have some gluten in them because of the fad, so people who actually have celiacs need to be really really careful to make sure that what they're buying doesn't have gluten at all in it. Especially annoying since the whole thing is bullshit, it's not bloody gluten that helps you lose weight or get in better shape or feel better. I'm betting people actually report these results because foods with gluten in them are often high carb as well.

The problem are all the ppl who suddenly claimed they have an intolerance to gluten that puts you into a bad light. It's also the word gluten that triggers ppl. If you'd just say I can't eat stuff with wheat, barley or rye in it ppl would probably not make such a big fuss about it.
@Bleedgirl
@Bleedgirl 2 жыл бұрын
@@JSmellerM I'm sorry, but... this is a very ignorant answer: people CAN develop an intolerance/allergy to gluten, or even the coeliac disease even as adults, and once you develop it it won't matter if you were fine with gluten up until six months ago, your body will have bad reactions to it, and I mean really bad. If you eat gluten with coeliac disease, one of the worst consequences is cancer in the long run, so we are not talking about 'a little stomachache and then you're fine'. Also, gluten is a lot more than just 'wheat, barley or rye', so no, I can't say that, I NEED to tell who will feed me that I have issues with gluten, cause gluten is tricky, my food may not have wheat or barley or rye in it, but there could still be gluten by contamination. It's a serious thing, I (as many other people) could seriously get sick because of it, so can't empathize with someone who doesn't understand and find me annoying cause I need to speak up in order to protect myself. Are there people who avoid gluten just to 'feel cool and healthy'? yes, and they are idiots. But the fact that some vocal idiots can be annoying doesn't mean I can't speak up about what can potentially harm me.

I'm pretty sure they are the same, it's only the severity of the disease, because my mom has celiac disease but it is definitely intestinal. Along with bathroom issues, she will actually break out in hives everywhere if her gf food just touches non-gf food. There are also cases so severe where peoples throats will swell or they begin to vomit profusely. Your cousin is very lucky to have a mild reaction to the disease compared to what some people might have. It's also genetic, my grandpa has it and my mom does too, luckily my siblings and I don't, but it could turn up later in our offsprings. So maybe be aware of that too. Also if she has trouble finding places to eat, there's an App called FindMeGlutenFree which will have lists of restaurants where you live that serve gluten free food.

gluten free baking is an art unto itself, and even the absolute best artisan bakers, can't make a good GF baked good, because everything about the chemistry is different. Nearly everyone on British Bake-off fails, except for the ones who figure out how to make flourless chocolate cake (the one dessert that is amazing without gluten lol)

@@aeonjoey3d this is very true! I have celiac but love baking so I do a lot of gf baking and it's so frustrating how much gluten changes flour qualities/texture. Basically no recipes translate, and to get it even somewhat similar to classic baked goods takes a lot of work/money

I'll go to someone house and they will say something is "gluten free" when all they did was see that it wasn't made of wheat.. Then you go and check and they just think you are being nitpicky! No! None means like less than 20ppm! Ffs I'm not trying to be difficult, I just am massively sensitive, and trust me, it's harder for me than it is for you. On a side note.. God I miss real bread.

I view it as an extended form of the natural consequence of favorite foods, that is to say, if each person has a "favorite food" that their apartment buddies/roommates either despise or cannot eat, everyone is guaranteed their own food won't be touched. Therefore, I would know my bread won't be pilfered, and I would know to leave the rest be so anybody who can't have bready foods gets what they need.

gluten free products cost more to make and the higher retail ones don't sell, almost no producers of gluten-containing wheat products make gluten free ones, they're all specialty brands with very few exceptions. several brands go out of business and are only available frozen and in major cities, they walk a tight rope of market price and demographic region.

Well, everyone saw that it was outrageously expensive and tasted terrible, so they assumed it must be healthy. This is the culture that we've created: healthy tastes bad because we're to lazy to cook good food properly. Now when someone has specific dietary requirements, their food is treated like a fad

It's like my dairy allergy. During meets after school usually my mentor buys everyone pizza but I keep telling her I'm allergic but she keeps forgetting even though I tell her while she is ordering. Because of that I have to go home and eat and come back afterwards. Also I have a bunch of severe abdominal issues so not only can small allergies kill me, I can't do any physical activity. I can't walk for very long, can't run or dance at all nor can I stand for long. Even sitting wrong can hurt me. I've told people thousands of times and they will say "Race me to that tree! Go" and then they will run off and I will walk behind them. or sometimes they might try to get me on stage either to actually do something or to carry things and they say "You can't be that weak! It's easy, anyone can do it!" yeah, anyone but me. I will even tell them about how one time I ran about 10 minutes a day for a week and then I was hospitalized. I lost 11 pounds in 5 days before I was in the hospital and while I was in the hospital, I lost 3 pounds in 6 hours. Luckily that stopped after those 6 hours but they had to keep me overnight and if they didn't have so many people waiting, they would have kept me longer. I was severely dehydrated when I was there. I was only 106 pounds and this was in September. I'm 17 so that's not healthy clearly, not even close. One symptom is that I have to go to the restroom a lot otherwise I could go to the hospital again, it has to do with the pressure down their but you don't need to know. One of my teachers refused to let me leave to go to the bathroom even though me and my mom told her about all of this. My gastroenterologist (abdomine doctor) even sent her a note. I had to sneak out of the room 3 times every class so I could go. It was ridiculous. The stress caused by that actually could have killed me. Stress is directly linked to abdomine and stomach issues. I told my mom after a month of dealing with that and my mom called the principal and argued with her for over an hour and did the same with my teacher. My mom had to threaten to call the superintendent and director of public schools. My mom is a teacher so she knew the exact law that made that illegal. They were effectively singling me out and they were making me feel unwanted and nothing more than a problem. Since then because of my teacher that is exactly how I have felt, nothing but a problem. Because of that, my recovery has nearly stopped. We obviously can't prove that the change in recovery is a result of my teacher but it sure seems like it is her fault. We knew it was probably going to take awhile but now it's taking much longer and as my doctor said "You will probably have it the rest of your life." At least it isn't bladder cancer like they originally thought it was, my doctor actually told my mom that I have 2 months to live. Luckily it isn't cancer but instead a bunch of stuff, most of which is unknown. I don't feel comfortable saying the names of what I know I have online though. I know no one is going to believe me, just like all of my teachers at first until they saw the effects in real life but I felt like venting and posting things anonymously online helps me vent. Just, whoever reading this, if you think you or someone else has an abdomine issue, please talk to a doctor. It's possible my issues could have been resolved earlier, they probably wouldn't have taken it so seriously while it was minor but it's worth a shot. Abdomine issues can come and go in a blink of an eye and can last a lifetime. Mine came in a blink of an eye and probably will never go away so just take abdomine issues seriously. No one takes mine seriously, except my mom and all but one teacher I have had since it gotten these issues.
