The cabbage water acts as a universal indicator (tells us whether a substance is an acid neutral or alkali). So the reason why the water goes red for the lemon and vinegar is because they are acids. Acids are usually yellow, orange or red and red being the strongest and yellow the weakest. This means the lemon and vinegar solutions are very acidic. As for the baking soda and ammonia, they are both alkali so they got blue, dark blue or violet. Violet being the strongest and blue being the weakest. The ammonia was a weak alkali because it was a dark green on its own. Green mean that the solution is neutralised meaning it's neither acidic or alkali. 👍

The cabbage juice works as an acid base indicator. Basically depending on what the cabbage juice is mixed with, the chemical structure will change in such a way that it absorbs light differently. Acidic things such as vinegar (dilute acetic acid) or lemon juice (citrus) will donate a proton and cause the cabbage juice to turn red. basic things like hydrogen carbonate (baking soda) or ammonia (NH3) will accept a proton from the cabbage, which makes it appear a 'colder' colour like blue or green based on the extent of the reaction. I don't know the exact chemistry behind why the baking soda turns it green and the ammonia turns it blue, but the cabbage juice is probably polyprotic (can accept more than one proton). This means it could potentially change colours twice and thus go from purple to green to blue. That would be my reasoning.

Cabbage has a chemical in it that works as a pH indicator. When you add in a base, it reacts in equilibrium with the OH- group from the dissociated base, and when you add an acid, it reacts with the H+ ion from the dissociated acid. Then, when you have the base in, and add an acid, the base reacts with the acid which shifts the equilibrium between the base and the indicator and causes a colour change.

cabbage is a "acid-base indicator" and when you mix it with ammonia which is a base it turns purple or dark blue, it means ammonia is a strong base. whereas baking soda turns green because it's a weak base. and when you mix lemon with it it turns red and it means lemon is an acid. when the indicator color change it shows you whether it's a base or acid or whether it's weak or strong.

The red cabbage has a chemical in it called flavin. It is a pH indicator. A pH indicator changes color with changing concentrations of hydronium ions (H30+). Making the solution basic, turns it a darker green/blue color while making the solution acidic, turns it red. This molecule can be used for pH titration where the concentration for an unknown base is calculated by adding acid and vice versa. Both the lemon juice and vinegar (acetic acid) were acids which turned the color red. The ammonia and baking soda were basic which turned it green/blue.
@ioanabalan9
@ioanabalan9 9 жыл бұрын
The cabbage juice is an universal pH indicator. All the liquids you used had different acidity levels which, in cabbage juice, change colour. Vinegar is a 1-2 on the pH scale (look that up if you don't know). If it has a low number, it is highly acidic. It also changes to a reddish, yellowish or orangish colour. The ammonia is alkaline. It has a higher pH number (10-11) so it turns blue/green. It is an easy experiment which i personally did in year 7. It is all about that cabbage juice. :)
@NeverBeBored08
@NeverBeBored08 9 жыл бұрын
It probably has something to do with the compounds left from the cabbage. Since both vinegar and lemon juice are acidic, it would make sense that both solutions turned red when reacted with acid. Since both ammonia and baking soda are basic, they turned similar darker colors. It's almost like litmus paper.
@ElleDeas

@GoddessAstrola
@GoddessAstrola 9 жыл бұрын
Taras you asked for an explanation as to why it does this so here goes. Now if I'm not mistaken the the pigments from the cabbage are reacting to the PH of the water by adding acids (lemon juice, vinegar, and ammonia) or a base (baking soda) provides the reaction that lets the cabbage water to act almost like litmus paper just more wet.
@maureendooley
@maureendooley 9 жыл бұрын
It's because of the Ph scale. I did this experiment, and it's based of acids, bases, and neutrals. For example, an acid, like lemon juice will be a more vibrant color, and you match that color with the one on the ph scale and you can tell if it's an acid base or neutral
@Alhameiri991

Red cabbage juice is a PH indicator. Just like litmus paper it will change colors due to the concentration of either an acid or a base. Acids, when mixed with an indicator , will turn all warm colors such as red , orange, and yellow depending on the concentration. Bases will change to cool colors such as blue, green, and purple . The PH scale is a scale used by chemists to determine the concentration of a solution. The scale is from 1 , being most acidic , to 14 , mostly basic. 7 is a middle range so completely distilled water is a 7 on the PH scale
@leigh7729
@leigh7729 9 жыл бұрын
Because cabbage is a kind of universal indicator, which - depending on what colour it changes - tells you the pH level of the substance you add to it, for example lemon juice is a strong acid, so it will turn it red, and water is neutral, so it will turn it green (neutral is pH 7) but depending on how much acid/alkali you mix into the water, it will be either a different shade of green, or look like green mixed with another colour. Strong acids will be red/dark orange Weak acids will be orange/yellow Neutral will be green Weak alkalis will be blues Stronger alkalis will be purple Strong alkalis will be pink (I think) So, pH 1 = red, pH2 = lighter red pH3 = dark orange pH4 = orange pH5 = light orange pH6 = yellow pH7 = green pH8 = light blue pH9 = blue pH10 = dark blue pH11 = purple pH12 = lighter purple (I think) and pH13 = pinky purple I think I'd make a pretty good science teacher
@nowandaround312

The cabbage water has something in it called a flavin, and this acts as an indicator which tells you the pH of the solution. pH means where something falls on the acid-base scale. For example, battery acid is close to 0. The color it changes to depends on the pH of what you're adding. Acids like lemon juice change to orange/red and bases like ammonia change it to blue-green. Purple is the color when the pH is neutral and that is why it changes back. You added an acid or a base first and then when you poured in the opposite it brought the pH back to neutral so it returned to purple.
@edgrtuck3r
@edgrtuck3r 9 жыл бұрын
The reason the water turned different colors has to do with acids and bases. The cabbage water is an indicator. If the mixture added to it is acidic, the water will turn a shade of red; the intensity of that red depends on how acidic the mixture is. Lemon juice and vinegar are both acidic, hence the color of the cabbage water turning red. If a mixture added to the cabbage water is neutral/basic (such as water) is added to it, the liquid will turn a deep green. Ammonia is a neutral liquid, hence the color of the cabbage water turning green. If the mixture added to the cabbage water is a base, such as the baking soda/water mixture used in this video, the color of the indicator (cabbage water in this case) will turn a shade of blue; the intensity of that blue depends on the base you add to the indicator. Your welcome.
@tomward9652
@tomward9652 9 жыл бұрын
The reason the mixture changes colour is because it's a universal indicator. That means it can detect the Ph scale (how acidic or alkaline it is) and if it's green, it means it's quite alkaline. If it's red, it's quite acidic
@areamusicale
@areamusicale 9 жыл бұрын
I try to guess, lemon and vinegar are acid and react with the spectrum below the PH7 ( which is neutral), the ammonia and soda are bases, so if compared to the colour that appears in the litmus paper, that will be the opposite. The cabbage organic material reacts in a similar way of the litmus paper.... I guess.

the cabbage juice is a sort of universal indicator. so if u pour it onto a acid it will turn red,orange or yellow depending on how strong it is. If u pour it and it turns green it means it is neutral. if u pour it and it turns blue or purple it means its a alkali

the red cabbage water is also used as a acid base nutrel solutions so if you mix cabbage water with acidic solutions like lemons and vinegar it will turn red and if you put cabbage water on base solutions like amonia and household detergents it will turn green and if you add cabbage water on nutrel substances or solution then the color will not change like water or sodium bicarbonate but the cabbage water would become more lighter but that doesnt matter either its red or green or purple and blue

The cabbage has a pH or pOH indicator (most likely iodine). When an acidic compound is added (citric acid/acetic acid) it shifts to red, however when a base is added (ammonia/sodium bicarbonate) it will shift towards the blue side of the pH scale.

It changed color because cabbage juice is a pH indicator. pH is used to measure things' acidity. Yellow or green is near 7 pH. 7 pH is between acid and basic substances. Water has a pH of 7. Red, Orange and Yellow is below 7, that means its an acid substance. If it's over 7, it will be green,blue or purple. That's basicity.

Since the red cabbage is a indicator for acids and alkalis and on the pH scale vinegar and lemon juice are acidic so they turn a red colour as for the others they are alkaline so they turn either purple or blue depending on the strength ;)

pH value of the chemical put in the gabbage juice determines the color. 6 or less is red or reddish, 8 or more is green or greenish, and 7 is blue.

It changes colour because the cabbage acts as a indicator for acid and alkali so when acidic things like lemon and vinegar it will change to red but when you add alkali things like baking soda it will change purple

it changes color because of the acidity and base of the liquid pored in. For example vinegar is a acid and on a pH scale it would turn red. And baking soda is a base and on a pH scale it would turn blue.

the red cabbage goes different colours when you add things because it will go red/pink/orange with an acid and blue/purple with alkilis it will depend on the strength of the acid/alkili red cabbage can be used as an indicator for the PH level

this is basically like those papers that you test the PH levels on. red=acid blue=base. ammonia is a weak base so it turned a greenish blue.

That's the PH scale. The reds are acids, the green and blues are bases. The cabbage juice helps find out what's acidic or basic

It changed colours because of its pH scale. The more acidic the solution the redder/orange the colour. However, alkali solutions turn the mixture blue/dark green or purple.

Because cabbage "juice" is a universal indicator and so if you mix it with liquids it will show how alkaline or acidic it is (according to the colours on the ph scale)

Red cabbage contains a pigment molecule called flavin. in simple terms a chemical that changes colors when introduced with an acid or alkali (indicator). color red is represents acid; the deeper the color the stronger the acid. same goes for alkali however its color is purple. if its green it means its neutral. (look up PH scales if you want to :D)

It must be the pH of the various solutions. It turned red each time you added acid in the form of vinegar which contains acetic acid and lemon which contains citric acid (both have a pH of about 2) and blue for ammonia ( pH 11) And the baking soda solution which turned the color green has a pH 9 which is not as high as the ammonia. The color seemed to revert back when you altered the pH of the acids by adding ammonia to them.

this happens because cabbage water is an indicator for acids and bases so when you add venigar and lemon which are acids it turns red while ammonia and baking soda are bases which turn blue but baking soda turned green because it is a weak base while ammonia is a strong base

They change colours because they are either basic or acidic, basic solutions, such as the baking soda and the ammonia they turn deep dark colours, the acidic solutions, such as vinegar and the lemon juice they turn a bright colour. Cabbage juice is on of many ph indicators. you can also use universal indicator or methyal orange or litmus to determine what pg the solution is.

Lemon and Vinegar are both acids and they showed quite a similar effect of color change. Baking Soda and Clear Ammonia are both alkaline and showed a different color change effect.. green and blue Could you repeat the experiment, but with using same amounts of each of the 4 liquids and same amount of cabbage water,however, taking care to take cabbage water samples at close time intervals
