Thank you Riccardo for this Video 🙏 I will try the limited Palettes on my next figures and Bust's. I think this method will help me a lot to understand how color mixing works and how colors "work" together. Keep up your excellent work 👍👍👍

11:33 When you say "pure colors" you mean paints that contain the least amount of pigments, right? The yellow you used was made out of multiple pigments though. This made me think of a exercise we did during a workshop by Arnau Lazaro a week ago, where he asked us to go through our hobby paints (which contain multiple pigments) to figure out which ones are "dirty" and which ones are clean by mixing them with other paints and see if we get a grey/brown or the color we where actually looking for. What really helped me was to guess which hobby paints looked like they where made with a pigment I recognize like PR122 plus I guess white (Vallejo Warlord Purple) and those indeed turned out to be pretty clean.
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
Yes the least amount of pigments if possible. But of course it's an approximation because some hues are simply impossible with a single pigment. The greens are especially hard for example. I used a fake yellow to show what you can actually do even in these circustamces.

This video is interresting, thanks :) Since I received my all kolors pledge, I'm wondering how I can use limited palette with signature blend. It would be great to have the pigment composition of every blend, so we play with the pure pigment version around. It will not be an limited palette as you show here, but can help harmonize. Like if I use "peach skin" and know the maybe yellow type and others, I can use the yellow to add variations, without adding a color.

Thanks. Sadly we can't divulge the mixes because of the nda signed with the authors. Limited palette is based more on hue than pigment though, in fact when i paint i use several pigments of the same tones to achieve different things that stay in harmony (a notable example can be seen with the Perylene Violet of w&n that can be replicated by mixing magenta with black mostly, but that i keep using for its other properties).

Royal Brown and Oxide Red look really close in tone to me. Oxide Red is more opaque, while Royal Brown is more transparent. Any other differences you noticed between the two? Realized the above while picking paints for painting a rusty weapon.
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
They are very different in tone actually. Royal brown is way more orange and saturated than the other. And then of course it’s very transparent. You can notice the difference in skintone mixing or in dark browns mixing (ie adding black)

I noticed you darkened and desaturated your colors with a color on the opposite side of the color wheel, instead of using black. I see the benefits of a chromatic black vs a black paint in order to retain the subtle palette synergy. When would you recommend to use a black paint instead of a chromatic paint?
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
Black is very useful to desaturate and darken at the same time. It will desaturate without tinting too much into the blues.

In your second palette what turquoise did you use. Is that the "Cobalt Bluegreen" from expansion set 1?
@kimeramodels

It’s the turquoise deep from the Tenebrae Kickstarter set. It will be released in the expansion set 2 in the future

@kimeramodels wich of your blue and green tones would be good to extend a zorn palette?
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels 5 ай бұрын
Green probably the oxide green could complement it, even though in a zorn you get green by mixing the ochre with black. Blue I wouldn’t use as the palette specifically restricts on the blue side to have everything shifted on the warm and desaturated.

Awesome lesson Riccardo! I have a question: - if i paint a miniature using a cold palette, how can i do if I want to add warm/cold contrast in different part of the model (like OSL) ?
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
I’m doing exactly this for my next video where I paint a miniature. With a limited palette and osl. Osl can go and contrast the main palette, or you can achieve it inside the palette itself (and this will be my take).

Very insightful demonstrations, Ricardo! Just one question: I realized your wet pallet is really wet, almost soaked. So there will be a lot of water in your paints. Is this intentional? Why do you do so?
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
What do you mean soaked? The paper is dry. The paints have a lot of water because for recording reason i couldn't dry the brush well (or lose a lot of time) and i carried over a lot of water from cleaning the brush.
@blumi73ch
@blumi73ch Жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. With „soaked“ I meant an excess of water. Your paper in the palette really looked wet, almost floating. So the water came more from the brush cleaning, I understand. Thanks again for your inspiration!

@@kimeramodels I been experimenting trying to mix Poison Green but can't seem to get there. Can it be mixed and what colors should I use?
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
@@monsterdenminis8219 It's a difficult color to mix and for an agreement with the artists we can't divulge how it's made. But the poison green on the video is not really the important part, you can do it with any type of acid green you like.

Fantastic video! Thanks so much for posting these, I'm definitely going to try a limited palette in an upcoming project. You actually explain it in a way i (a non artist but proud mini painter)can understand. I do have one question. Can a mixed warm/cold palette work? For example, Magenta, Cobalt Bluegreen and Warm Yellow. Would it help to make the Warm Yellow pop or just feel like an odd mix of colours?
@kimeramodels
@kimeramodels Жыл бұрын
Thank you. A mixed palette can work, in fact there are complementary color schemes around. By having a split though, you need to mix your intermediate and achieve a thing that is called "Gamut Masking". I wanted to make a video on gamut masking actually, but it's a bit more technical, you can look it up in the meantime.
