Such a beautiful color. One thing that this color does and was in part why I added it to my Ultimate Pallete of 30 is its "shooshing" properties when added wet 'n wet to other colors. I just love the movement! Denise, I was going to say I wished I had found you sooner, but honestly I wasn't ready for your amazing content, which for me at least is better understood as a moderately experienced watercolorist. I can't say enough just how much your immense efforts are appreciated! You give such in depth information and watching you paint your incredible world of extraordinary watercolor animals is a true joy! As a teacher, you were meant to share your knowledge and skills as you do it so effortlessly well. xx

Seeing as it is toxic, how do you get rid of toxic waters? I've been avoiding toxic colours because I'm scared of dumping it into the sink. So far I've been allowing the sediment to sink in the water and pouring out the clear water on top then soaking the sediment filled water into paper towels, then I throw the paper into the trash. Is this an okay way of throwing away toxic colours?

I want to quote one of my chemistry professors, with whom I talked about pigments; “As long as you don’t plan to eat it you don’t have to worry” But honestly, I feel WAY more comfortable with replacing nickel azo yellow with azo green, which (as far as I know) is the same structure with copper instead of the nickel c: And, the uses are pretty similar for me, both being good candidates for a cool yellow c:
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
Annikania as always, my concern is always more about the environment than myself. I know I'm not eating the paints, but what I put down the drain worries me 💜

@erins.54206 жыл бұрын
In Liquid Color im surprised you don’t have a process for being earth kind when disposing if Yo͏u͏r paints!! It’s easy, you have a water bucket for washing the paint from you brush and another you keep clean for painting. The brush washing bucket...when it get to the point of too dirty, transfer that into a plastic cup or container OR a cup or container you don’t care much about. Leave it outside so the water evaporates and you’re left with dried up pigment at the bottom. Disposing of the dried up pigment as long as it’s not down the drain has many options that are most beneficial for our water system and earth. What I do, I have a rather large container for this because cleaning the brush wash bucket I still don’t want the bits remaining to go down the drain. I dump the concentrated water and paint into a large bucket outside and use a hose with a strong stream to spray clean the bucket, it takes seconds and is kept controlled within the large bucket/container (I use a huge paint bucket...these are labeled to be able to keep even toxic properties contain in the bucket without breaking down). I leave the bucket in a safe place outside to evaporate that won’t harm any animals or entice bugs to hang around. After the pigment is all that’s left in the bucket after a few cleanings the pigment with chip away from the plastic and what ever I can grab wearing protective gloves I take the chips out and put those into a waste disposal container that I can take to a local place that is capable and legally able to dispose of toxic materials. It’s only cost me a few bucks and I’ve done my part as a watercolor enthusiast.

Your videos are so inspiring! I have a question regarding toxic paints. I love PY150, however, I am concerned about watercolor toxicity and have removed all colors with a warning label from my palette. What are your thoughts about watercolor toxicity; and what would be a good non-toxic alternative to PY 150. Thank you!
@InLiquidColor2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Renee! I let my paint water settle after a paint session, pour off the water on top, and pour the part with most of the paint sediment in a dump bucket. The water evaporates off the top, and I can repeat the process until I have enough to take to a paint disposal location. Unfortunately PY150 is a fairly unique color. You can give PO48 mixed with a brighter transparent yellow a shot!

Hi Denise, great video. I have nickel azo yellow and i have to pick one more yellow to my palette but i'm struggling about if going for a pure yellow (py154) or a more orange yellow (py110). This Nickel azo i find that it mixes better with blues to get greens rather than with reds to make oranges, so for that reason i think py110 could work better, but for the other hand is very dark in mass tone and maybe a more lemmon or pure yellow could make more sense. I will get both eventually but i have to make a short list for this time. I wonder what do you think, in your experience, could be a better addition to pair with the nickel azo....a cool bright yellow, or a deep orange yellow? Thanks!

I have the QOR version. I like the change in colour from dilute to thick. For a more even looking yellow, I like Benzi yellow154.
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Turner PY154 is my favorite true yellow but definitely different from this one imo :)
@StephenMarkTurner6 жыл бұрын
I have a trio of QOR yellows. The 154 is smooth and VERY yellow. By contrast, 129 on the green side, and 150 on the orange side, with the 'texture' ie change from masstone to undertone. I figure that yellow is the hardest hue to mix well, because of the high value, so makes sense to have a few different paints.

Nickel azo yellow (Primary Yellow in CMYK mixing) is just one of the ok complementary colors for Ultramarine Blue I heard ,

Do you think it's redundant to have both Quin Gold and Nickel Azo Yellow (both from DS) on the same palette?
@LittleZmaj6 жыл бұрын
Love the color-mixes! I was wondering, since the nickel ago it contains heavy metal what is the best way handling the color, is it ok to rinse the brushes and water containing the color in the sink? I am happy to hear you are feeling better and it is of course ok to take a bit of time off to finish your projects. Wish you good luck on the projects!
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
AdelaJ that is what I'm unsure about with this pigment. I'm not sure of it's environmental impact.
@patti3d4 жыл бұрын
I want to be more conscious of these paints to the environment also. So I will not put the paint water down the drain. I think in my yard would be better since the soil will absorb the metals and not in our water supply. I think we are ok as long as we dont eat or drink the paints. I am sure at some point we all have accidentally drank from our paint cup! I now use a cover or cup lid on my drinking water while painting!

Btw, Turner Watercolor has PBr25 also; Benzimidazolone Brown. You try pronouncing that one! Lol. I remember from science class that you could break up big terms into 2 syllable pieces. So I'm going with that. Benzi-mida-zolone. Where's Dr. Bunsin Honeydew & Beeker when you need them? 😁

Holbein does too. Imidazolone brown.

I try to stay away from the heavy metal ones as well, but I got both the transparent yellow and the quin gold hue by Schmincke, which both contain nickel and their cobalt turquoise. Which is a bit weird since I'm usually quite paranoid when it comes to anything that's a potential health hazard. The mixture's just all seemed too damn tantalising and luring, it was hard to pass by them - I guess, I'll just have to be a bit more careful around them then ^^'

Denise, I noticed you were using the larger Perla in this painting. What are your thoughts on it? My go to brushes are Black Velvet but sometimes I need a firmer brush that holds less water. Would the Perla fit that bill?
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
This was my first painting with the larger size so I can't say long term, but so far I really like it! Definitely much more firm than the SBV, but sometimes that's what you need! :)

Would it be a good choice for the warm yellow in a 12 pan travel palette? It would be in there together with lemon yellow, a pyrrole red, magenta, ultramrine and a cerulean as primaries as well as a purple, green (phthalo) and orange. This is a ratjer specific question but I am really unsure about the earm yellow thing..
@irritatedlibrarian90573 жыл бұрын
It's more of a mid yellow than a warm yellow. If you're looking for a really warm yellow PY65 hansa yellow deep or a Quinacridone gold (pigments depends on brand) would be best.
@ChristinaTodd19706 жыл бұрын
Oh! How do I use PY150? Since I only have QOR Quin Gold (and QOR Nicole azo yellow) I mix the two to temper down the QOR Quin Gold, which is closer to Quin Burnt Orange by DS, imo. This mix gives me a lighter version closer to the DS Quin Gold.
