I hiked Uncompahgre Peak & Wetterhorn Peak from Matterhorn Creek TH in late September 2017. Although both mountains can be hiked separately, it was a fun time to hike them together.

Me and John and Daren climbed Wetterhorn in 1986. When we got to the top, there were a couple of guys from Germany smoking Lebanese hash. They got us so stoned we were afraid to climb back down, but the weather turned nasty on us so we had to do it anyway. Lol.

Un-com-pah-gre. Sounds like it's spelled, with the last syllable 'gray.' It's a Ute word, meaning "rocks that make water red."

Wonderful climbing review. In particular I like the lack of music. Thanks!

Agree with you think it would be somewhat difficult for a dog to do Wetterhorn. I chickened out on the last pitch to the summit it's really exposed.

Great video! Are you aware of any camping spots in between Uncompahgre & Wetterhorn if one wanted to split up the distance and make this an overnight?

Love your videos! Will be hiking Uncompahgre as part of my honeymoon this year - will you be making/have you made a summer version of the trail? Thanks :)

You know, updating this video has been on my list for like 2 years now - hoping that 2023 will finally be the year it happens. Stay tuned!

Please remind people new to mountains that one persons class 3 is anothers class 2 and a third persons class 4 or 5 . Also the weather can change these ratings considerably .

Wetterhorn is way more fun than Uncompahgre which really is a "slog" as you put it. I'm not going to bother with Class 1s and 2s anymore; I'll just sticking with 3s and 4s because scrambling and climbing are where the excitement is at.

Love your videos! How was the drive to the trailhead? I have a civic and was wondering if it would make it. Thanks

Blake Bell thanks man, appreciate it. I will post my review tomorrow with an updated link which includes directions to the trailhead. I hiked from Wetterhorn creek trailhead but you can also hike from Nellie Creek TH. The main difference between the two is how much 4wd road you have to deal with. Your civic could make it up to about .7 away from Matterhorn creek and about 4 miles from Nellie Creek.

Thanks for the quick reply! I just moved to CO a few months ago and want to hike all of the 14ers in CO before I finish up med school here (4 years). Uncompahgre has been one of the big ones on my list - might do Matterhorn with it! If you ever want to do a 14er I'd be down to go!

Great goal! I had set my sights on 3 years to tackle them all and I have about 17 left for winter or next season. This hike shows the combination of both peaks, which I highly recommend. If you don't hike Uncompahgre from the Matterhorn Creek TH, you will have to drive up the 4WD Nellie Creek TH (about 4 miles) to hike Uncompahgre, then drive to Matterhorn Creek TH to hike Wetterhorn. Check out the link above for a lot more info about all of that jazz. Sounds great about hiking though, add me on OG or Twitter and we can coordinate a future hike!

Why do you not use hiking poles? In all the videos I’ve seen so far you haven’t…

How long did climbing both peaks take? Me and some buddies are going out there this August, it’ll be our first 14ers and we’re wondering if this same route would be doable for us

Check out my rankings of the 14ers here so that you can put them both into perspective as its your first time around. www.thevirtualsherpa.com/ranking-the-colorado-14ers-by-difficulty/. I think its also important to understand the class system since Wetterhorn is a class 4 hike: www.thevirtualsherpa.com/yds-class-system-explained/. But to answer your question, you can absolutely do these in one day if the weather is good.

Since I only wants to do Class 3s and 4s, I would be interested in knowing what other notable mountains in Colorado you'd recommend that involve mostly scrambling and climbing, excluding other 14ers which I plan to do. By the way, I love your channel.

Get Gery Roach book on the 14ers or the CMC's books ( Colorado mountain club ) . The sheep's suggestions are excellent ,especially the conditions of the climb/ hike and current road conditions .

Doing both in a day, if you have a 4x4... What do you think the distance total was? I know they are normally 7ish miles for wetterhorn. Does it double it or just maybe an extra 3-4 miles?

I looked on your website and you said Uncompahgre is dog friendly. Are there any parts that would possibly be more difficult for a dog? I have an Akita so he’s pretty big but athletic. I’m just hesitant on taking him on certain hikes because he does get a little nervous having to hop from rock to rock

Brandon Seifert - umcompahgre is pretty dog friendly there really are no super technical sections that I wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing Juno on. Obviously I don’t know your dog but I would say he should be good to go.
