I have ridden many of he roads and passes you have covered on your trip on a R1200GS and I also have ridden most of the passed I know you would like to ride like Engineer, Imagene, Blackbear, Tincup, Pitkin etc and you are absolutely right. I rode my DR350 on the gnarly ones and it was even a handfull at age 70, so you made the right decision. That is called wisdom not adventure. I have enjoyed your trip and it has brought back many memories. I hope to get out there next summer at age 71 and continue to enjoy the Colorado back country.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful and inspirational adventure. 6:00 - As a 60 year old returnung rider, my dual sport off road days are behind me. I bought a G310GS a month ago. I'm looking forward to the kind of adventure you showcased so stunningly in this video. I never liked riding on highways. I expect almost all of my riding to be secondary roads, gravel roads, and dirt roads, so the baby GS should be all I need. I have always enjoyed ultralight camping, and now I'm going to do ultralight motorcycle camping. For all of its wonderful capabilities and features, the 1200GS is heavier than I want and more powerful than I need.

I'm glad you chose not to do any very difficult mountain passes on your GS. I saw a youtube video of a guy who did the Blackbear pass on a Vstrom (650 I think), and he HUGELY regretted it. He had to WALK the bike down the steepest sections on that pass. A heavy bike on a trail like that is ridiculous. Your statement about using the "right tool for the job" is 100% spot-on.

You should have done the passes. So many of them are very doable with big bike fully loaded. I spent a week in Ouray, CO on a Yamaha Super Tenere. We had a guy in our group with one leg....another brought his wife, two up. We were all over those mountains. Now you have to go back and make another series of video’s. Maybe you could call it, “ All the Passes I Should Have Done Last Time!” lol. Excellent series, keep them coming.
@boblindner58084 жыл бұрын
"We had a guy in our group". Risk management is a personal decision and is also very different when you're solo. It's also a very individual decision, even if you're in a group. In general terms, advising someone to do something outside their comfort zone is probably not a good idea. Sterling has a vast resume of adventure riding as well as doing hard stuff. I appreciate his insights on this topic.

Lighten up guys. It’s not like these posts are real time. Sterling is sitting in his home office making amazing films for us to watch, not sitting on his bike at a trail head practicing “risk management”. Just a little good natured chops busting. But to your point, I probably would not have done those passes at the end of a long trip either. For me, there comes a point when I say, “That’s enough adventure for now”.

Sterling, Do you have thoughts on personal safety while camping out in remote places alone?
@SterlingNoren4 жыл бұрын
That's a big topic to consider with many variables: nature, wildlife, weather, accidents and injuries, other people, etc... In general I try to use common sense and not be afraid or paranoid. Try to have enough supplies (food, water, etc.) and shelter (clothing, tent...) in case you get stuck somewhere longer than you anticipated. I didn't have a "Spot" or similar device but that's a good idea too. Stay within your limits too.

Had a question about the bridgestones you were running, we’re they new when you left? What was your overall thoughts on them? I have them on my 850gsa and the rear tire is probably 50% after 1600 miles of most road riding.
@SterlingNoren4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the rear tire was brand new when I left. I think I got about 4,000 miles out of the rear tire. I usually get 3-4k out of a knobby off-road rear tire.
@zacruch52524 жыл бұрын
@@SterlingNoren would you say the Offroad benefits are worth it? I bought mine and put 100 miles on it with stock tires and switched to the bridgestones, don’t mind buying tires every 4k but only if it is worth it. Was considering going back to a street friendlier tire as I probably am 80% street but want to be confident Offroad
@SterlingNoren4 жыл бұрын
@@zacruch5252 Yes, in my opinion the full off-road tires really do make a difference. Every time I do a long off-road ride like a BDR I start with a fresh set of continental TKC 80 or similar tire.
