Good review. I'm new to colored pencils too and it never occurred to me that they could be blended with solvents. I'm putting this one in my cart at Amazon and will be ordering it next week.

Hi Jason, I use coloured pencils a lot and have found the Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils set of 120 gives you a fantastic range of colours, they blend really well with blender pencils which Faber-Castell also make. I have found that using blending medium can water the colours down too much for my liking. Also it's worth having a look at Derwent Inktense pencils which you will be able to use with a water brush or paint brush as they are made from pigment which makes their colours really pop on the page, so to speak. Try having a look at Animal Art by Law on KZbin, she uses pencils for her pet portraits and they are stunning just like your paintings. Two of the best sites I have found for price and open stock as well as sets are Crafty Arts and Anne Swann, but there are a few more which are worth a look! Can't wait to see what you do next especially if it is with coloured pencils!

Hello from Louisiana, Jason! Thank you so much for this flip-through and review. I'm a colored pencil landscape artist. While this book doesn't cover that specifically, the core information and the rest look worth having. Looking forward to more of your videos. Bright blessings.

Thank you for this review. I actually received this book as part of a Christmas Gift from my husband and was a tad disappointed. Although it is great in terms of basic techniques, it had NOTHING useful for me to use towards Portrait or Wildlife drawings using colored pencils. If you do find a colored pencil books that does, I would love to hear about it. Such a huge fan of your work :)

You probably already know by now, considering how old this video is, that she has a portrait book as well Colored Pencil Painting Portraits. I liked the way you went through all the pages - next time can you zoom in more and try to keep your hands out of the way of the words. You do have lovely hands, though!!! I'm curious to know if you have started doing works in colored pencil and what you think of the medium.

I have this book and bought it after seeing good reviews. Unfortunately for me it has ended up as a door stop. As Jason has said, the few 'learning pages' do not have enough steps. I found it on the whole a boring book. The fact that I couldn't sell it it in 2 groups spoke for itself. Sadly for me a heavy red herring that is stuck there taking up space. If anyone in Manchester would like it, do ask. I would rather it go free to someone who might appreciate it.

Sorely I wanted to tell you thank you for that review & I'm going to look into that book to buy. I do have trouble with learning from books though, I have a form of dyslexia that. Causes me not to understand things from the written form & need it explained verbally. That's why I like the classes from Craftsy., and also Anne Kulburg has some simpler classes I can take. (not sure I spelt Anne's last name correctly) Also the Sharpened artist has video along with his lessons. Which you are far beyond taking those, but are wonderful foe basic colored pencil learning. I am confused though because I thought you already knew colored pencils since you've done that zebra with the white pencils. You aren't a beginner in those, & I love that zebra. Something I want to do later when I'm better. Many good wishes for you learning cp, & be sure to post your works. Excited to see them when you've finished one! Happy your back from you time off.

I have only done a few pieces with coloured pencil, only started them recently really and they just use white. The only full colour one I have done is the cats eyes where I tested out different pencil brands, so yep I am pretty much a complete beginner with them ;)

Thank you for the great review Jason. Colored pencils are something I'm new to , & wanting to try. I recently bought some Prismacolor pencils to use. It's the best as far as money goes that I could afford. They are highly recommended by several artist tho. I've also enrolled in several classes.one is the Sharpened Artist. He's got a great class for beginners. Not for you tho I think your a lot more advanced for that one, but you might see one he does have for you. He's does a similar pod cast with Lisa Clough as you do. She a wealth of information also, but you know that already know that. Where as I'm a total novice at this, you are an already fantastic artist,so nothing I take will be the same for you. Although there are some amazing pencil artist on Craftsy that you might look into. They may have some books out also or videos on what your looking for with fur & hair, etc. I excited to see your finished project of colored pencils. That will be one I'll purchase.

Thank you so much for all your videos. You are very generous and an amazing artist, probably one of the best in the world. I have heard that the Japanese brand Holbein have become a strong competition to all the best brand out there, both Faber Castell, Caran Darch and others? Thank you again for your reviews they have helped me a lot.
@capyboppy7 жыл бұрын
aviaja petersen Holbeins are amazingly buttery with good pigment. I have a 36 set plus the pastel tones. One thing to be very careful with is the paper used. If you don't get it right it is impossible to blend and/or layer. Get it right and they are a dream. The one criticism is that they are not available open stock. You can buy single colours in packs of 6, and there is also a guy off KZbin who charges $5 for his service in purchasing single pencils plus postage.

Wait for Alan Woollett's book if you're into wildlife. I have this book and i find it more a "Prismacolour pencil" book even though it has other pencil info in it. theres certain things you can't do with Oil based pencils that you can do with wax based and vice versa. For example white poly with not go over darker polys well at all and from what i have seen prisma white does. Maybe its just me being a Poly lover lol :D
