I’ve been flip flopping on whether or not I want to buy and start playing Warmachine, and seeing your yellow Khador really inspired me since I’ve also been wanting to paint yellow. I love how the yellow + Agrax turned out and now I wanna do that myself and get in there to add the rest of the details. Good work!

Warmachine is a ton of fun. If you have a local club or shop that plays, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Generally, the "dip" is intended as the last step for large army batch painting. Granted, with how shiny it comes out, you end up having to matte coat it too. Also, a lot of people thin it with something and apply it by brush as opposed to literal dipping. So, maybe change the order of operations to 1) prime 2) base paint much darker than intended color 3) highlight to a bit brighter than intended color as the dip is going to bring the color way down 4) apply "dip" 5) matte coat

I think you hit the nail on the head with the dip being old tech. I used to use it on everything until the day Contrast Paintes were released, and havent touched it since. For it to work, you need to base coat the mini first, then apply it with a brush. Once dry, possibly touch up extreme highlights and metallics. The effect is actually really good, and the resultant paintjob is indestrictible. Excellent for games like Massve Darkeness and Zombiecide. Contrast has obsoleted it thought. I swear buy Colourforge. My local FLGS does them for 10 per can. Raven Black is a match for Corvus Black, basically a black you can still shade. REally cool. Their Wraithbone clone is actually better than the citadel one, and it my go to primer. Excellent video though! Gave the right conclusion: Contrast is hard to beat.

I bought a tin of dip and once I saw how it worked, it's been sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Another thing: you CAN make colors more vibrant with layering/highlights. That is why most Citadel Base paints are very dark/dull colors because with the 'Eavy Metal style, you're supposed to layer and highlight with brighter colors.

Yes, and that's exactly what I did with that drybrush highlight, and sure enough all of the models look brighter now! But with my lazy painting, you only go down in vibrance. Me having to drybrush is an additional step that I prefer to avoid 😢

Best hobby advice, play Hearthkyn Salvagers. They're smaller so they take less time to paint. 😁

I suffered exactly the same problem with the dip. Doesn’t work with what I’m trying to do with my models (paint them and get them playable as quickly as possible!), and really doesn’t give the effect I’d hoped.

One suggestion, have you tried the sunset yellow zenithal, then a top down only blast of the demonic yellow?

I have not, no. That would work tbh sure! However I've progressed the army to the point beyond sprays now. And honestly after giving them a wash and then a drybrush back up with Cygnus yellow the difference between the initial yellow sprayed is almost meaningless

Ha, interesting. What I have learned unintentionally that people are more than happy with coloured plastic on the table as log as it stands out from the opponents army. I was considering doing some of my projects with literally spray undercoat/base, zenithal and drybrush.

I'm gonna be in one of your hobby hater roundup videos, but that Dip method has really ruined those minis ._. Maybe you should do a hobby video where you investigate how you can paint strip 3D printed dipped minis. Love your painting generally though, I like that you have a personal colour pallet and you can tell a Glandy paint scheme from a mile away.

Luckily in this instance I said the dip ruined the models before you did! Rather unhappy with both armies and just wish I'd gone my standard route :( the cygnar especially just look very bleh. Hopefully picking out some white and gold will fix them

Ive been tossing around the idea of doing Slap Chop but instead of all the dry brush work, you prime white then use Army Painter Dip to get the recesses then slap chop as normal. But I'm not willing to spend $30 usd on dip wash.

I don't believe this will work. Slap chop as normal after the dip just means contrast paint and I specifically call that out as something that will clog all the crevices so contrast won't work :(

AP dips have always been questionable at best. There was a mania for them about the time Rune Wars was launched that spawned a plethora of crappy looking armies. Their paints are pretty bad in general really. Brushes are decent though.

Do share more when you've added to those two armies. I feel like comparing that middle model (with all the metallics etc picked out) against the other two was not illustrative. Possibly the blue _will be_ too dark, but the yellow may pop once the details are done. (How many new models!? You are a glutton for punishment)
