The one thing that is often missed is the 3 progressive base drum kicks shortly after the lyric "I put 3 rounds into Kate McCannon" ... That is subtle genius arrangement right there ... Voice, Guitar, Kick Drum - There are complete bands that do not sound as full as Colter Wall ... If you get the chance to see him live he has an incredible band and real stage presence ...
@rexcatastrophe Жыл бұрын
Another dynamic in this song that never seems to get mentioned is how when he spots Kate in the creek with another lover, the guitar mimics his sharply rising anger -- from calm fingerstyle picking to furious, slamming the chords so hard they buzz on the frets in a matter of seconfs

This type of song is a "Traditional" Country song style known as a Murder Ballad. Colter gets his inspiration from a lot of older lesser known country artists and during this period of his career he used this deeper voice in conjunction with traditional sounds to make some killer songs. If you look into his newer releases its the same style but has stopped using this deeper octave because it was damaging his throat. He's got more of a Marty Robbins tone to him now, but its still amazing to see this type of music being made anew.
@charlesbrown4483 Жыл бұрын
Lyrically his original songs remind me so much of Marty Robins, there’s clearly a big influence there. Which is awesome, Marty was one of America’s greatest songwriters and Colter is the new generation of a similar style of songwriting. Edit: one could also mention the great Townes Van Zandt, I’d wager anything that Colter takes a lot of inspiration from both of those great songwriters.

You're correct in that it's a murder ballad, but the song form predates "Country" music by quite a bit--it's more of a Scottish Folk style that ended up informing Blues, Bluegrass, and Appalachian Folk that all eventually wended their way back together to inform Country. I adore the genre. Some suggested listening for others who like this: Dock Boggs, Pretty Polly; Fairport Convention, Matty Groves; R.L. Burnside, Stack O'Lee and Billy Lyons; Johnny Cash, Delia's Gone; Nick Cave, Murder Ballads (album).
