I absolutely approve of this sales method: 1. It's more affordable even if the price isn't great, especially for a kid. A tenner is something you can easily part with, either as a fixed expense or sometime during the month. 2. It gives new players a chance to try a faction, whether it's gameplay or testing how they like painting the models. 3. Trading things with friends or simply selling them off is something we want more of. However the overall issue is still that 40k is just too expensive in general. I think the price point deters people (including parents buying for their kids) much more than anything else. I understand that they undoubtedly research this, but there's also a difference between how much you can charge and should charge.
@Akimbo4119 ай бұрын
GW is fully aware of their price gouging. If sales slump, they’ll lower prices. They simply don’t have to right now.
@wyatttyson77379 ай бұрын
I don’t think GW is really that much more expensive considering what the kits offer. Most competitors are significantly behind in terms of sculpt quality and modularity and options in kits. Not to mention that when you factor in inflation 40K has only slightly increased in price over the last few decades while greatly improving over time. Could it be cheaper? Probably, but not by much.
@Smilomaniac9 ай бұрын
@@wyatttyson7737 You're awfully confident for someone who's wrong on all points. GW has *kept up* the price according to inflation while salaries have only gone down in comparison, which means it's significantly more expensive now more than ever. GW's modularity has only diminished, especially since options have decreased between older and newer kits (primaris replacements being the primary example). The models are more monopose than ever. Their newly revealed Deathwing Terminator kit is missing seemingly two entire squad loadouts that the old version had (standard termies and characters) and undoubtedly a ton of the extra parts that were available. Instead there's an upgrade sprue to put on the regular new termies. This is incredibly lazy and disappointing. The only comparable competitor is Bandai, which blows GW out of the water on every point, but even regular tank kits have improved drastically. GW isn't somehow magically ahead of anyone, they've just switched over from hand sculpted hero scale to true scale models. 3D printers have reached the same detail quality and the custom miniature bases I've had printed for me have *sharper* detail than what GW sells. Regarding price, the problem isn't the plastic - The miniatures you get inside are worth less than the cardboard they come in (color printed boxes are surprisingly expensive). Tools/molds and plastic injection machines have only improved over the decades and last for a very long time now, these one-time costs seem high but are negligible compared to just having warehouse workers, which leads us to... GW's primary big issue being their bloated club-house staff and prime location shops that they insist on having, not to mention massive legal and marketing departments. Please don't spread the unfounded myth that GW is barely squeaking by on their products, it's entirely bullshit. They can change their entire price and product structure within a year to start selling 3D printing files and licenses, enabling alternative poses and for 3rd party artists and sculptors to sell their own designs via their shop or system. Don't spread this unfounded myth that it can't be done cheaper or exaggerate GW's quality if you don't even know what else is out there.

@michaeltunnicliffe49359 ай бұрын
The magazines are always tempting but hard to commit to. Sure, it's a great value. But you are trapped into a subscription where you have to pay £10 every week. Which doesn't sound like much but that's £40 a month. That's almost enough to cover my phone bill, netflix, Spotify and Playstation Plus. And it's only good value of you want all of this stuff. If you can get 5 terminators for £10 that's a great deal. I collect Space Marines and so that's amazing. But I don't collect say genestealers. So even if you can get an entire combat patrol for like £50, that's £50 I'm spending on something I don't want or need. And all the issues that are just paint which I might already have or not need. And this brings me to my main problems with this... The last one was great because I collected Necrons and Space Marines. I was so tempted to do that one because I don't think any of the issues would be a waste of time. But it was still like a £900 commitment. I may collect Necrons, but do I want to buy all of that for the sake of it? How much would I just be repeating what I already own? How much do I need to own a Necrons army so big I'd need to move houses just for storage space. It's a lot of stuff that even when it's an army I collect, I don't need it all. And this one is worse. Because I don't collect all of these armies. I will have the same problem with spending a lot of money and needing to find a lot more time to commit to painting and needing more storage boxes etc. and yet, there isn't the draw of making a huge army. You are making lots of small armies, some of which I don't want. I'm still tempted like I always am. But I'm going to need to really get out the spreadsheets and workout exactly what I want and how much it will cost to work out if it's really worth it to me. And I know I could buy just the individual issues I want or need. But I've tried that in the past and it's hard to do. Because not many places stock it and the ones which do sell out almost immediately.
@michaeltunnicliffe49359 ай бұрын
Yep. Didn't take long at all to weigh up the cost analysis. Ignoring the premium for a second. Only 4 of the combat patrols would be of any use to me. And if I just buy the combat patrol boxes, it would be £380. So I'd spend £509.10 extra on crap I don't need if I subscribed. No brainer. This is a great deal if you want it all. But if you don't, they are going to get a ton of money from you by making you buy shit you don't need.

Okay, this is amazing if you have a group of new players or for smaller gaming clubs to expand their available minis. Or maybe if you and your siblings/friends are curious about the game and don't know which faction to choose, so you can sell off the unused. Unfortunately, that means thus time aroubd it offers less potential to expand an existing collection than before (if you played Space Marines or one of the others featured) but I guess attracting as many new players as possible is the actual goal here. Not giving discounts to already acquired customers.

This feels like a good thing to get if you want to improve your painting skills. Diverse blend of models at a steady-ish pace along with presumably the paints needed for them.
@DMDuncan379 ай бұрын
The paints are probably the worst deal. And others paint brands are much cheaper, so why ?
@Bluecho49 ай бұрын
@@DMDuncan37 Moreover, you're limited to the exact paints on offer, delivered whenever they're delivered. You'll likely go months before being able to fully paint any of the models you get. It's better to just buy the paints you want, from the manufacturer you want, so you can use the scheme you desire.
@JennyDecimal9 ай бұрын
Previous subscriptions were really well thought out about what you got when, too, so for beginners, it gives them something playable quickly and then refines their technique at a really manageable monthly pace, with tips for all the models already sent. It's a good, bite size route to getting a solid handle on the painting basics.
@SwabianClancy9 ай бұрын
I like the idea better than the two previous models: - As someone who prefers to paint rather than play, it offers better opportunities to pursue this and to obtain different models more cheaply. Depending on how high the variable with colours and tools is - A tick more interesting for beginners, even for more than two people. You can go deeper together and try things out. - For people who have been in 40k for a long time, they have the opportunity to get other Combat Patrols at a lower price and possibly sell them again at a lower price.
@kapope35378 ай бұрын
Wait so its good that consumers can buy stuff they don't want at a loss then sell it again at a loss? Are we just sucking the GW teet that hard here? The magazines value kinda sucks unless you're in the UK or you can nab one off the shelf that has a decent kit but a lot of store owners just ebay the good ones straight out of the gate. Redemptor Dread, I'm looking at you. This is just a way to make people feel compelled to buy more models. "I already have a combat patrol if I only spend another 200$ dollars I can have a 1000pt list" nine times over. All these games workshop news sites keep talking about how good it is because GW asked them to. The only person worth trusting is Auspex and he says its not a good saving so how are people still in the comments talking about how good the savings are?

Imperium was $13.95 per issue. Having just completed that subscription I plan on just looking for single issues. I think this would be more attractive for new subscribers if they had terrain in the premium kits.

The Imperium Subscription was a great way for my family to build up a few forces. We ordered the premium sub. I'd suggest this for anyone interested in getting into the game or people that enjoy the idea of lots of smaller forces.

this will probably drop in 2025 into other countrys. Warhammer Stormbringer just started in Germany for example. Warhammer Mortal realms never made it outside the UK though

Hachette Germany just launches Stormbringer on the 10th of January, so probably it will take around half a year until we see this here.

I would just say it's always a risk. Buying a unit that comes across multiple magazines. As there is no guarantee, you'll be able to get all the magazines. I had a problem with imperium in that. the weapon sprue magazine never came in for the dreadnought and i ended up having to buy them separately secondhand
@GreenBlueWalkthrough9 ай бұрын
Which not to mention if that price is true your not only getting the models at a GW discount which 800GBP for 8 starter armies is fine not great but fine... But you do get the mags and t6he extra stuff in that price which is ok... Not great but good as most games have starter armies at around $100 and they may only come with the models nothing else.
@greeny10339 ай бұрын
Im definately getting into this, while I have my main favourite faction of the grey knights, I really dont "hate" any of the other armies listed as part of this, would be nice to get a large variety of models tbh. Was there a start date for these or did I miss it?

I was looking forward to release of the next part work 40k magazine. As I am currently working on Space Marines and Tyranids I was hoping that the release would be focused on the two factions like Imperium magazine. Getting back issues and bits off EBay really help expand my Necrons in 9th edition and was hoping for a similar result this time. I can see the appeal of doing combat patrols but seeing as I already have two of the factions combat patrols, they were in the Leviathan box set, it’s going to be a no to a subscription for me. Will look forward to grabbing the back issues and the increased supply on eBay.

I'd buy it, I like how it spreads across factions. I have Orks, Necrons and a Genestealer cult currently but always see these magazines selling for high prices on Ebay & would like the pics & painting guides.

This is a super cool idea if I can pick and choose which issues I want from a stockist (the Votann one would come in handy, and I'm thinking of branching off into Chaos Space Marines) since most of the Combat Patrols don't interest me and I would have liked to have seen Sisters represented.

So, a Terminator Sorcerer + Winged Daemon Prince, 3x Chaos Spawn, and 5x Rubrics w/Warp Flamers. As their starter for the mag? I don't know, I got more than that in the starter set. I'll probably be into it when I can kitbash dreadnoughts or wardogs out of Ork stuff. The Killer Kans look almost like they "could be" Forgefiends, with a bit of work. Or a Wardog. That could work out ok.

Wanted to subscribe to Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Stormbringer but it was only available in the UK and Ireland. And now I believe it's also finally available in the US. It's like Europe don't exist anymore... I think this release is going to be the same. To bad because I wanted to subscribe Stormbringer immediately and have the same with this 40K one but I think Hachette don't like European customers. Shame.

I Don't get how this is supposed to be worth it? For 800 bucks I could rather just get 2 full armies, but now I'm getting a bunch of different factions, while still spendingi 800 pounds on it? Having 500 Points of evey faction is dumb and doesn't allow for tactical flexibility. I giuess they just want to flood the 2nd hand market?
@Warlock5729 ай бұрын
Gonna skip this one. Subscribed to Imperium in the US, did the Premium subscription, and was kind of disappointed. Total cost after taxes and shipping was $76 and some change. Plus another $10 on the months I got each individual binder. Some months seemed fairly good value, others not so much. Figure in the hassle from shipping issues and the length of time it took to actually get my monthly sub (2 weeks from the day each was billed, still waiting on my last shipment because it wasn't posted till the middle of December) and I just can't be bothered. Your mileage may vary, and hopefully they have their act together for this one.

This actually seems kind of terrible? I started re-entering the hobby last year and immediately got caught up in waves of FOMO. One of those waves was Imperium Magazine. Subscriptions were no longer open by the time I was aware of it, but since I was interested in both Necrons and SM, I did tons of research into it, and all in all it seemed like something I would enjoy. I was looking forward to the next iteration. That is going on right now for Age of Sigmar in the form of Stormbringer Magazine. I really like what I'm seeing, but right now I'm focusing on Kill Team and 40k, so it's gonna be a nope for me unless something changes. While I was looking into Imperium and Stormbringer, I learned and thought about these a lot. It eventually dawned on me that these are best for people who just paint, beginners, and people who actually want everything one of the models on offer. If you're getting 50% off the label price, but only want 50% of the products... you're not getting 50%. You're paying for full price for what you want, the other half either becomes a pile of shame or takes time from what you want to be doing. Plus you get it slow rolled to you on their schedule rather than buying it on yours. So making a subscription magazine based on already discounted boxed sets? To save $100 or so assuming you want all 9 of those combat patrols? I just don't see the sense it that! Not to mention everyone who bought leviathan or a 10th edition starter likely has 2 of these patrols already! I can really only see this being of value to painters who like GW models and beginners who want a sampler but don't intend to play much other than combat patrol and compendium kill teams... Oh and then there is the matter of getting hobby supplies and paints that you may or may not want at random intervals, but I digress.
@Vinterloft9 ай бұрын
Omitting the 3rd/ 4th (depending who you ask) most popular faction Tau seems like a very dumb move. And then including World Eaters and Votann which are second and third to last only out-unpopular'd by Daemons?
@samchassar-hesketh35119 ай бұрын
very tempted to subsribe with my hobby group as ~£800 - £960 with premium is A LOT of money considering i dont want things like genestealer cults or orks or any chaos things. but if i where to share that cost over 7-8 people, doesnt seem so bad, I'd definatley be interested in some space marines and the Guard, maybe som LoV as well
