The disconnected vignettes around which this series is built is a brilliant way to tell stories of this war. They can tell a story, either about an event or about people, without having to connect it later. This episode is presumably an allegory for the early days of the battle of the bulge and the chaos that ensued until the Allies figured out what the hell was going on. The one where Saunders burned his hands and was lost: nobody goes back after that but they don't have to worry about that.

My mother who is passed was a great fan of Mickey Rooney. He would write nice letters to her. In this episode we saw the more serious leader and hero side of Kirby (Jack Hogan) and it was nice to see the beautiful and talented Claudine Longet. These shows bring back memories of my childhood.

As I write this comment (March 2013) Mickey Rooney is still alive and will turn 93 in September this year. Amazing actor for the little wise guy! He was in SO many different types of shows, playing such a variety of characters that even though he is really well known he never quite the credit of being a truly great actor. He is a part of 20th century Americana just as much as anyone else. A part of TV/Movies of the 1950's and '60s as any other actor. One of the Great Ones.

My grandad found a sterling silver set like the one shown on this episode except it was WAY bigger. It was meant for seating a big table of SS officers. Everything in the chest had the SS emblem on it. He couldn't get it out of the underground German HQ he found it in with help because there wasn't enough time. The artillery was about to open up on the town he was in so he had to leave it. Would be worth around a million today probably.

But me and all the older guys said NO cause we didn’t want or need the cops on our asses. Just remembering …

Mickey Rooney AND Claudine Longet in the same episode! Quite the star power. COMBAT! must have been at the height of its popularity. The courage of Kirby & White is representative of the pockets of green or exhausted & outnumbered GIs whose courageous & stubborn resistance slowed the German advance & made US victory possible. What made the weather so unbearable was that GIs did not have adequate winter clothing. US forces suffered 64,000 weather-related casualties that winter. Fear of German atrocities was well justified. The SS were particularly brutal...slaughtering whole villages. Ike experimented with segregation during this battle. Thousands of African Americans were thrown into action alongside white troops for the first time since the Civil War. All African American artillery units served with special distinction in this battle.
