Actually, if Im not mistaken the optical tracking is mostly used in case if the system is being jammed. The front antenna is narrow beam tracking radar. Its used to provide range and target speed to the onboard fire-control computer which sends the signal that controls the missiles. Under normal conditions the missiles are being guided automatically by the computer.

You are mistaken. Optical guidance is primary, the missiles are radio commanded, not radar guided. You do not receive any warnings via RWR about tunguska operation unless its search radar is transmitting (that big rotating dish that is behind the turret) and that is used only when Tunguska is not connected via datalink to SAM network where targets are shared. The big dish between cannons is ranging radar for cannons. It is very narrow beam (1°) that doesn't track anything. It just range the target. Cannons are typically used in automatic mode, where search radar (or datalink) finds target and then target is ranged by the front radar, and cannons automatically tracks target and can even be set to automatically fire at the target. The cannons are possible be aimed with optical mode as well, and if target is close enough that range ain't problem, then fired without ranging radar too. If Tunguska doesn't start emit with search radar, you don't see or hear anything....
@AKAtheA5 жыл бұрын
Optical guidance is only a backup (and is kind-of manual), normally it tracks the target with the tracking radar and commands the missile via radio link...even it's successor - the Pantsir S1 works this way, but everything is more modern and even more deadly ;-) Clicked the video expecting the Tunguska having them for breakfast, was not disappointed :D

It is designed to provide day and night protection for infantry and tank regiments against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles in all weather conditions. Tunguska-M has the 1RL144M radar with detection range 18 km and tracking range 16 km-near of the original system's. The mechanically scanned target acquisition radar for the Tunguska-M1 offers a 360-degree field of view, a detection range of around 18 km and can detect targets flying as low as 15 m. It has a search and a track radar, so a JDAM or a H.A.R.M from beyond 10 kilometres, or above 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) is the best option.

It would risky even in an a10 . It is literally designed to mawl slow air craft . If it sat in a field out of cover and you knew where it was you might be able to kamikaze one helo while another fires a faf before it is shot down. But you would need a serious missile. No point going behind tree,s or forest because the human inside the Tunguska can manually fire straight through the trees

This is one of the reasons why the British in Linux helicopters carry infantry equipped with Milan anti tank missiles. which are unloaded 1km from the place where they are considered to have hidden tunguska or shilka an to destroy it with an anti-tank missile. While the helicopter is hovering somewhere or landing and waiting until the terrain is cleared of anti aircraft systems and then goes on a tank hunt.But the danger still lies in the use of 30 mm Tunguska cannons against anti-tank teams

9:23 engagement... You did not evade shit. The missile went after your buddy, the second missile went after you. Tunguska was two for two. And did you really think they could be evaded in a Huey just because you evaded them in an Eagle? SMH... Did you seriously just compare a UH-1 to an F-15 in evasive ability? And then right after that while resetting you taking about performing a diving left "Notch" when the missile is fired. Notching has fuck all to do with evading an E/O weapon. Notching is a radar evasion technique, specifically against Doppler radar. I watched the video for the graphics, Sure as hell won't listen to you for tactics. During the next engagement right after than reset you still "notched left" when you should have evaded and terrain masked right along the tree rows paralleling the railroad tracks. Instead you put yourself in an open field instead of behind tree cover. Again.. your NOTCH did not work. that missile was after your buddy. The next missile got you. And By the way... Tunguska is not an E/O guided missile. It is radar controlled Command Guidance. You referred to it later is a SACLOS missile. Which is closer to reality than your E/O guidance you keep talking about, but it is not SACLOS, it is ACLOS. The radar tracks and guides the missile via automatic radio commands to the Missile. RADAR or E/O refers to how the missile is guided. SACLOS ACLOS MCLOS refers to how the missile is commanded by the guidance. MCLOS, SACLOS, and ACLOS is best understood in the concept of a crew operated system like an Anti-tank missile. The operator aims the weapon at the target and fires. With MCLOS, the operator has to actually steer the missile into the target (MANUAL Command Line of Sight) With SACLOS (Semi Automatic Command Line of Sight) The Operator just has to keep the target in the sights and the system itself generates the commands to steer the missile. With ACLOS, the system does all the tracking and the generating of the commands to steer the missile after the operator has designated the target and fired the missile. This is Tunguska. Radar tracks your helicopter and the operator designates you as a target and fires. The radar tracks your helo and the system automatically sends radio commands to the missile in flight. This entire video is rife with you not knowing WTF you're talking about. I just want to "Gibbs Slap" you up back the head every time you say "Contrast Lock" That is not how it works at all. Not for this missile. The GUNS can be aimed with a manual E/O sight if the radar is jammed... that's all.

actually missile is radio commanded, not radar guided. Tunguska doesn't need radar at any phase to launch and guide missiles. It is search radar for long range target search when not connected to radar network via datalink to feed information of targets. The missiles are automatically or manually guided using a optical or FLIR sight. In automatic mode the FLIR is used to lock on target and it guides missile normally. In optical mode the gunner keeps reticle on target and guides missile on target. cannons can be aimed same way, but then as well automatically by radar. You use ranging radar for target ranging for cannons at longer ranges, but can shoot without at shorter distances like now in video. The idea of Tunguska is that it doesn't reveal itself to any target unless it uses a search radar. You don't get a search warning, no lock warning, no launch warning (other than maybe your MWS) and when it hits you, you have no idea what happened. The problem in DCS is that there ain't air defense network and cooperation between units. But this mission is against one tunguska, that doesn't know threat and so on would be using search radar to find targets and then proceed with those informations. You are right, you don't "notch", flare or jam the Tunguska. You can chaff to confuse ranging radar (1° beam width) but only when chaff is between tunguska and you, meaning when you are running away... Tunguska is annoying defender when properly used, and will put anything on ground that can't maneuver quickly enough, and that is where its weakness is, as DCS version doesn't use automatic FLIR tracking to shoot down those fast F-15C maneuvering. And it uses radar to reveal its location while no datalink to be given via EWR.

(According to that un-impeachable source, Wikipedia. . .) Point being - if you had managed to get the drop on this vicious beast, what then? Sparky sparks, some hearing loss for the crew. They’ll zoom climb to 13km and pop a chute, looking for radars turning on … then the chute is capped, the second rocket stage speeds them down and the laser proximity fuse makes sure it’s an ex-radar. And if it is not dead then, it might want to eat a hellfire missile. PS: If it uses a contrast method to track you, how about smoke? Or even flying in front of trees, buildings, mountains …

I think you guys should have just took turns popping up and down to bleed its ammo out. maybe try to get one chopper on its left and one on its right so that when its switching between aiming at the two in takes more time for the turret to turn. Bit of a weird mission anyway. I think realistically you would just want to avoid it and let something that fit the role do the job while at most providing data to the craft that fits the role better. Is it even possible to notch a contrast missile? I’m not so sure you can, especially in a Huey.

No but if u change direction fast enough the track can not keep up.

20:56 why did you sidestep to the left side instead of facing it and hitting it with your missiles?

At what point did you realize the SA-19 uses radar guidance as it’s primary fire control system? :-D Edit: ^WRONG! At least partially but definitely in terms of how it’s modeled in DCS.

For the life of me I don't know why you didn't take a wider R/H birth instead of following the tree/rail line.

In real life, if you are a state and have 40 of these an S300 and a few S400 on around a base or capital for example how safe are you?

Not at all against the cook coming in on a bicycle wearing a suicide vest, ICBMs, military coups, spies, ground troops, etc. But against hueys flying around bringing a paring knife to a machine gun fight, I would not worry.

@@grimreapers I would have to disagree- maybe if you were shooting through buildings or structures.
@hugiebessie45135 жыл бұрын
@@Pyzro Even though, the Cavalry tactic is to have multiple (4) helos hovering within shooting range, and popping up in turns. If you just run in and turn in, the SAM computer probably tracks any blips, predicts your next position, and waits for you. It may be worth to find out how many you need to overflood it.

Hey Cap. Do you have rudder peddles? If so what kind so you use? I want to buy the UH1 but I don't have peddles. Is it worth it to buy the Huey without them?

The Tunguska is on a par with the Gepard that was fielded in the 1970's. True, it was not equipped with Missiles, but the option and capability to equip the Gepard with Stingers were easy enough.

A Ka-50 with anti-tank missiles and a radar would do WAY better
@BrunoViniciusCampestrini5 жыл бұрын
@Alb 92, my mistake. I thought that the Ka-50 was able to carry fire-and-forget missiles, because, in that case, the range of the missile would not be a big factor since the helicopter could hide behind the terrain, make a popup, launch the missile and get behind cover again.
@BrunoViniciusCampestrini5 жыл бұрын
I should add that a AH-64 with the radar mast would do even better with this tactic, unfortunatelly, the Apache is not in the game
