The Rovajärvi shooting area is quite popular these days, one of the largest such areas in Europe and certainly interesting that up north. Most European armies and indeed air forces don't get to fire live ammo as far basically never, like up to 40 km or something. I guess the big thing here is that Finland is testing the final touches of NATO artillery integration, including giving targets to allies and them being able to fire accurately without issues. In the Finnish winter, which may bring up things for the uninitiated. Like in a not too distant exercise, certain allies didn't believe us when we told them they'll need our heated tents just for survival... Which they found out pretty quickly 😅 It'll be interesting to see what's the next solution, now that Ukraine is showing that thermal drones are everywhere and a heated tent won't be viable in most cases.

Yup, same with Älvdalen and Vidsel training areas in Sweden.

3:44 If you mean word "Huomio", that's "Attention" in english. People from artillery background might tell more about that, or is it just to confirm that you noted command. And comment about reindeers. They try to avoid shooting reindeers as area is in Lapland and there are plenty of reindeers hearding around the area. As every reindeer is owned by someone (Paliskunta), army needs to pay compensations if they happen to shoot to reindeers... Has happened, once big herd walked straight to the area where already were incoming stuff. Some say, it wasn't pretty sight...

If you go to Belgium, do NOT miss the airborne museum in Arnhem, next door in Holland. I saw it in the 80's (while I was doing the Nimjegen March with the Canadian Artillery) and still remember it vividly. Very, very well done. In Belgium itself, there is the Trench of Death, a particularly lethal stretch of WWI trenches that is perfectly preserved, and accompanied by viewers for 3D pics taken at the time. You won't forget it.

Finland has always been training the centralised fire of of large amounts of firing units. But most other Nato countries, especially in western Europe and North America have been using artillery in a more decentralised way in the past few decades. Nato forces need these kinds of exercises to find the best and most effective ways of concentrating fire of units from multiple militaries into a single target. It is better to make the mistakes and have the problems in exercises, not when you are against a real enemy.

The firing commands are Lataa - Huomio - Tulta. Lataa is literally "load" but you could translate that to "hang it". On a 81mm with a fixed firing pin the loader would hang the round with both hands. Huomio - attention! The loader releases one hand, and moves it to the leg of the mortar, but the round is still hanging. Tulta - fire! The loader releases the second hand, moves it to the leg and presses down on it while ducking their head. The gunner on the other side does the same, you hear ffffffuitTHUNK and the round is off. The 120s on this clip have a trigger mechanism with a lanyard so the round is actually dropped on 'lataa' and huomio is actually just "I'm about to pull the cord" Edit. A rusty Mortar NCO here, so I'm talking about mortars and am unsure how these would translate to artillery guns. And somebody correct me if my memory fails me 😅
