On Mixmaster the two purple window looking things are supposed to be the vents for the engine that powers the mixing drum. This kind of truck is called a "front dispensing concrete mixer truck". They are favored in the USA no because they can drive straight up to a job site and dump their load. There by saving a ton of time. Also, ironically, they are cheaper than the more iconic mixer trucks.

I think they changed it for the sake of scale. Mixmaster's truck mode is by far the smallest of any Devastator component; like, look at his cab, and then look at the tiny cockpit on Long Haul or Bonecrusher. So they figured a front-loader would be a bit more unusual, meaning they could stretch its design a bit and give it a smaller cockpit. It's also possible they did it for the sake of a G1-accurate Devastator. Devy's character model has his left foot being basically an indistinct green block with a small purple rectangle at the front, rather than the full-fledged truck cab of the toy. The Combiner Wars Devastator's foot is actually pretty dead-on to that, since it uses the lumpy block thing at the back of a lot of front-loaders as the foot (which means the Takara version is actually less show-accurate, weirdly).

He's thus the biggest and baddest of the lot (sans perhaps Monstructor, but whatevs, he doesn't have a new toy anyway ^^).

Saw one of the trucks that Mixmaster is based on IRL, I can confirm the bigger "cab" is the actual cab. The rear end is some form of motor for the mixer itself. It's called an Oshkosh S-Series Front Discharge Mixer.

i`ma geewunner but kinda like where some of the current stuff is going. my only objection has to do with decisions that have been made due to the economy. the "hollowness factor" that many 2015 figures have, and also how if they arent hollow, then they are often too small. Otherwise, i like the creative direction taken most of the time.

+Alex Larsen Pretty much, though some fans may not have agreed with the idea of characters not able to combine earlier given the ability to combine. That, and interests seem to be shifting towards the IDW side of things. They nailed it with Tailgate, Swerve, Brainstorm, Skids, and Trailbreaker, but most of the stuff these days leans towards mostly G1, with some RID, BW, and two (three if you count Centuritron) instances of Armada. I dunno, I feel as though I'm sounding like a buzzkill.

I absolutely adore how similar these guys are to their G1 counterparts, just bigger and more detailed like proper Classics/Generations/Whateverbots should be. Even the fact that they don't intercombine with other bots in the series feels like a nod to G1 Dev and the old Scramble City dudes. Also: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNTT!!

I feel like my only complaints with this set (low detail, 4 guys with wonky elbows, and occasional hollowness) could have been addressed by scaling him down slightly. Even for voyager-scale, they're huge. Otherwise, I love these guys. (Mixmaster's bizarre choice of alt-mode is still a head-scratcher, though.)

I can actually confirm that YES, Mixmaster is SUPPOSED to look Jank as hell. This style of mixer truck is indeed real, Ive seen them. The bit at the back, which looks like the front, is probably an apparatus for cooling or electric components for powering the mechanisms, or possibly both.

Excellent take, hilarious as always, major props for condensing that much content into twelve minutes! I think the lighting issue with the insane amount of neon glow on the figures themselves might be fixed with more diffusers on the light source, but I'm not all that sure. It's an insane amount of reflective green to deal with, even the official product photography can't get away from it without heavy post processing.

4:20 - The original toy was designed after a rear discharge mixer, while the new design is supposed to be a front discharge mixer (check google images). I'd guess modeled after a Terex or Kimble, (but someone with more mixer knowledge could give you a better guess.) The rear of the toy has two faux 'windows' painted on to make it look more accurate when combined. On a side note Perfect combiner (3rd party) kit PC-06 has a snap on piece that corrects this and makes the back the new front. As well as a other parts, including replacement extending crane arm for hook, and a shovel for scavenger. Also another kit, PC-07 provides individual weapons and replacement arms/elbows for most of the team. While hard to find now (at least hard to find affordably) I believe the upgrade kits are worth it.

I think both Devastator and Predaking were made incompatible with Combiner Wars as an homage to their G1 incarnations. In G1, these two were the only two combiners in the toyline that did not fall into the “Scramble City” combiner style- that being the interchangeable feature every other combiner had. I think it’s a nice touch if intentional, and a funny coincidence if it’s just a happy accident.
