The neck:waist trick doesn't quite work for everyone, especially when you get into the plus sizes. Instead I just bring a tape measure with me every time I go thrift shopping. Knowing my measurements and how to accurately measure a garment has saved me a ton of time in the fitting rooms!

Nice tip!
@SageLilleyman2 жыл бұрын
Oh that’s a great tip!! 😊
@infamoussphere72282 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm thinking a tape measure would work better for me because I'm quite a bit bigger on the bottom half than the top half, my neck and shoulders are quite small but from the ribs down, exponential growth. I try things on. I don't trust that I can buy *anything* without trying it on other than like, a scarf or something, because my bust is only 5 cm bigger than my waist/I have proportions that aren't really catered to in a lot of off the rack clothing. So as tedious as it is, for me the tips are Try. Everything. On. (Yes, this means I almost never buy clothes online.)
@floridagirl85402 жыл бұрын
I’ve gained some weight and I’m pear shape so the bottom half is big lol I’ve noticed with the neck trick if the pant waist can overlap about an inch then if fits me
@nonineveryoumind43142 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. It would be lovely to have my body in the correct proportions as it used to be pre-babies. However, unfortunately, it is no longer. The neck tip doesn’t work for larger sizes 😔. I would need a neck the size of a car tyre to match my waist these days…😩🤣!

Sage that yellow dress is just perfect for you! And the bomber jacket was worn by women in the 1940s but usually as a work jacket (think of Rosie the Riveter) or camping jacket and worn with denims or pants.

Hi Sage, This video brought back memories of my Grandmothers. They had “house dresses” which were a solid color or floral. They always had a belt made from the same fabric. They wore cute suits and hats for more formal occasions. Always with a matching “pocketbook”. Which we call a purse today. Thanks for the happy memories! That yellow dress was made for you, along with the red sweater. Cute shoes and pants too!

We had a USO Show at my church a few years back and I went to the thrift store to see if there was anything I could use that looked kind of like a WWII women’s uniform. Hanging on display on the wall was an army green shirtwaist dress that happened to fit me perfectly!!! Not only is it rare for me to find a dress that fits me correctly (I have large hips), but it also looked very 40s! I sang “Chin up, Cheerio, Carry On” (Judy Garland).

I have seen so many people pass up modern clothing at thrift stores that would would look perfectly vintage because they don't know how to make it look vintage. I would to see you do more clothing thrift hauls and maybe even home decor hauls when you have the time.

That yellow dress is DARLING on you Sage, what a find even at $25! For pants I always bring a pocket measuring tape to check out the waist and rise when there's no dressing room, works great! Also in re: jeans I totally agree that you're likely to struggle BUT some great finds can often be had in the MENS section if you're not very hippy! If you have a straight up and down figure mens' jeans can work great and look very authentic since especially in the 40s women were often just wearing men's jeans and overalls/dungarees. If you find a great oversize men's pair you could also pay to have them tailored. I wouldn't recommend trying to alter them oneself unless you are an expert seamstress, jeans are tough, but the price of thrifted jeans and alterations will still likely be less than a new repro pair!

Loved this episode! I’m not patient enough to go through everything.😖 I envy you. My daughter managed a resale shop and she divided everything by color and size. Example black blouses/tops, S,M,L,XL; blue blouses/tops…you get the idea. That way I could go straight to the color I like, then to my size, Bam!!! Saved a lot of time! I hope you will take us along on a houseware thrifting excursion! That’s my weakness too! Also, I would love to see you do vintage wedding gowns! Hi Sage, Yes love your video 💕💕💕 Sitting with my Vintage Darling ❤️coffee mug☕. First, I absolutely love your hair and everything you picked up! What fantastic finds 💕 The Nautical outfits look amazing on you❤️ Not too many people can pull that off so easily. (OMG... You are so right...it's very easy to look at the price, bring it all home and then never wear any of it 🙄) Adding on here: I have never heard of measuring pants around my neck before. I had a pair of shorts and I didn't think they were going to fit. (This video motivated me to go through my closet) I wrapped the waist around my neck and it went around. I tried my shorts on AND THEY FIT!! Had I known all the time that all I ever needed was to lose inches around my neck I would have saved so much money on a gym membership!! I am just going to keep exercising my neck now. 😂

I love a thrift haul/go thrifting with me video! I've found GREAT skirts in thrift stores, but I look for wool skirts and I live in Canberra, which is cold enough for a lot of places to have them. They're often quite reasonably priced. I also found a lot of wool skirts in Sydney last time I was there, which was weird because Sydney isn't so much wool skirt weather? But the Newtown vintage stores were stuffed to the gills with them. You can usually get a good wool skirt for $30 or less - cheapest I found one for was $5, at a little church clothing stall. At Vinnies they're usually about $12. I also really love looking at the sewing and knitting patterns. So much cheaper than buying them new.

Your "OP SHOP" is much nicer than any thrift stores I've seen here in the USA. Ours are generally just junk I'd never actually buy. Once in a blue moon I go into one with a friend and may find something to buy for our home. Recently, I went to our church's thrift store to donate some books and came home with a stash of silverware for our summer home. It had been about 5 - 6 years since I'd been thrifting.But we recently got a summer apt. up north to go to get out of the Florida heat, and we are needing to completely furnish it from scratch - so I will be thrifting at the church's thrift store a lot more before summer.

I love the knickknacks and decor too. I also love how you said don't buy more than you need because someone else might "really" need that item. In America sometimes people go in thrift stores to buy things and resale them for more and I hate that because thrift stores are so essential to those who can't afford brand new clothing from retail stores. I love your channel btw.

I saw a video on goth fashion and how older styles aren't outdated or badmouthed. They are cool and celebrated, even if they aren't the current hip. All of them are evergreen and they come back sooner or later. As for fashion in general, it seems that past decades aren't celebrated too much. There sure are some elements that come back, but not all- like the Farra Faucet wind style hair or an eduardian dress if you will. Im a big fan of the 50's and 60's. I have many family fotos of that period. The charm, elegance, the modesty, the vibe- as if things, that we surely miss nowadays. I am from a different country, yet it seems that we had lots of things in common in that time period. It''s refreshing to see people that not only love that elegant look of the time while being themselves. And you make it so effortlessly you and it suits you well! Your videos feel like Im being transported in a more simple, more honest analogue world. And your narrating voise is soo soothing! Helps me out in my sensory overload episoeds. Little secret? I have incorporated your tip on weekly cleaning meintanance of the household- a time saving and working formula. Have a lovely day! Cheers :)

Sage, you would love going to the estate sales I go to in Spokane Washington. I have been selling Mid Century Modern items on ebay for 24 years. Last summer I was at a family run estate sale. All the clothing was still in the closets and in boxes in the middle of the bedrooms. Nobody was looking at the clothing. I went through it all and picked up 15 really cute vintage nities and about 6 slips for a dollar each. Wonderful colors in great condition. I don't usually buy clothing but I had to pick up all the baby doll nities and slips. I see a lot of 50s and 60s clothing. I know nothing about them so I always pass on them. They almost give it away. That is why I started watching your channel, to learn what to buy so I can sell it. Steve

The best op shop find I've ever made was a vintage-ish skirt in a tiny little rural town that otherwise had a lot of "frumpy" older-people styles of clothing (though, I admit, it would have been quite good for a man looking for more formal styles of clothing). So I think that my best advice that I could give to anyone who wants to give thrifting a go is that its a time and frequency game, not necessarily one of location - go often, go to several if there are several available to you, and don't give yourself the expectation that you have to buy something every time.
