I feel this house needs to be bought by someone special. This home gives vibes of not ever "belonging" to anyone. It just allows families to live and love in it in an endless flow as it endures.

I think the room with the built in shelving full of china was probably the original dining room with the back room and cooking fireplace was the kitchen.The fireplace had to be that large to have several small coal fires going, a spit for roasting meat and a baking oven to the left. I too was curious about the small doors above the fierplaces in the first two rooms shown. I would have gone with a deep red for the front door instead of yellow. Thanks for the tour.

The dining room looks like original flooring. I also lean towards farm style sink and butcher block in kitchen.

Beautiful farm! I think that the granite countertop on the right is for baking, rolling out dough. I wouldn’t change that at all. Maybe a farmhouse sink to go with the theme .

I like clocks. I would put mantle clocks and other types of period clocks strategically in the different rooms. Outside, I like flowers so some nice flowering bushes, annuals and perennials around the house.

I would actually contest that much of the flooring is actually original. (Not in the first room) Although it would be more definitive if we could see it from the underside or a closer examination of the molding. The inconsistent width of flooring in the more private sections of the house seems common while the widest planks would be used in the public spaces to show off as well as display a political statement. The wide planks that you have determined to be original are also a sign of protest and patriotism ...quite common in pre-revolutionary New England. King George deemed that the colonists could only use short width soft pine for their building needs, as the British Navy demanded all straight wide hardwood to be used for the sole purpose of export for British Navy ship masts. So in protest colonists used as much large gage hardwood as they possibly could to thwart the crown.

The kitchen I would change to natural stained cabinets with soap stone in a hoaned finish on the side where the granite is since it's a stone you might have found in a kitchen around this time and a farmhouse sink.

@@CPAndy-x5x they could have. They can move anything. I've seen lighthouses be picked up and moved back to keep them from falling into the ocean. But it was in the way of a government make work project and was likely stolen by the local government via eminent domain. The crushing boot of bureaucracy always wins.

There seems to be a lot of room downstairs and I would like to have seen the kitchen where the cooking fireplace was and the dining room where the kitchen was. Like the brick left natural. But love this house. Another good one, thx.

Having grown up in California, I find houses like this fascinating. Anything near this old would have been made of adobe brick, and long gone. This one seems quite large, with higher ceilings than some I've seen in pictures of other homes, that can look dark and pokey. It has an open feel that I like, without modern things like skylights or picture windows. The decor is spot on. I agree, though, about the commercial-looking metal sink. A 'stone' one would be perfect. I believe this style is called 'salt box'. Nice low-key narration. Enjoyed the visit. :)

I like exposed brick on fireplaces. That flooring is old. I raised my kids in two revolutionary war era homes in upstate New York and uneven widths of floorboards are common. Some flooring boards in my homes were 12-13 inches in width.

I have a two basin two drainboard restaurant sink similar to the one in this house. However we built it in, so it sits in our homemade cabinetry just fine; this way of course it is supported by the cabinetry and the legs are not necessary. Also ours is seems to be deeper from to back as it fits nicely into our 2' deep countertops which of course are all wood we sandwiched together. We did the same in our frugal frau downstairs kitchen with a single basin and drainboard restaurant sink.

Gorgeous house. I like how the owners have made a good balance between "period correct" and choices that are comfortable for the way we live now. I'm sure that owners through the years made a lot of changes, as you said. The room off of the bedroom was probably originally a nursery. As for the sink, I like the industrial vibe of the stainless steel sink, but agree that a farmhouse sink would be more in keeping with the overall look. The kitchen is great, though, other than that. And that one spindly legged bathroom vanity looks roughly 1890-1900 to me. It must have been fun putting plumbing and HVAC in this house when those became available.
@carolweaver32692 ай бұрын
It is funny but agreed with most comments you made. I agree the kitchen could use an 'apron or farmhouse sink' instead but this, but this one is very much keeping with the time so it is fine as is too. The counters as well would be best keeping them uniform, meaning the same, but it is fine . Like the granite breaking it up. The black in the fireplace is good, but brick would make it seem more correct to its time . The wood on some of the floors you thought that was not original though, I disagreed with, and thought it may well be the original. But when I did really see the original I agreed 'totally'. Think some closets perhaps made if they could be done looking like they were older closets could be brought in and people now do use closets. They did not so much in those days and used hooks but think that the closets would looke nicer? I would try to buy older furnature little by little, if I must, in order to keep it looking like it was the right furnature for its time. Would nit look very nice if it wa jsut mixed up with various ages of furnature. This is a wonderful home. is the ony heat source in the home just fireplaces? What would it be heated with otherwise?I know older homes can be cold in winter months of course. The guest room would need a dresser and some pictures up, as some Revolutionary war or older feminine or neutral pictures even . Some pictures of everyday living of the people. Not anything too over stated. I think if one did not have children , and yet having so many bedrooms, it may be a great as a' bed and breakfast!' It would help bring in money and certainly would be a place I would think many would love to see and be part of as long as there is plenty of water ? I do however think that at least the guest room bathrooms would need a shower brought into it all, even though too modern, but have noted that this is how it is usually done as many people do prefer the shower and if it were a bed and breakfast that may be one thing that would need to be added to at least one bedroom that would be used for such? I know it is not in keeping totally at all, but yet often this is wanted. Some do like baths more but this is giving them choices. Absolutley love this home, and it truly would be one I would more than adore owning, if it were possible.
