Republican gubernatorial candidate for Michigan Ralph Rebandt was caught off guard by comedian Jason Selvig when he was pressed about wanting the Bible to be a “basic textbook in schools”. Once Selvig got Rebandt to agree that books featuring pornographic imagery should be banned in schools, Selvig pulled a fast one and mentioned that the Bible also features plenty of pornographic content. "Ralph Rebandt, a Republican candidate for Michigan governor, says he wants the Bible to “be the basic textbook in schools.” It’s a position he came to regret in a recent interview with comedian Jason Selvig.
Selvig, part of the conservative-skewering comedy duo The Good Liars, got Rebandt to agree to ban books from schools that have porn pornographic imagery in them. Selvig then pointed out that the Bible has a story about two daughters who get their dad drunk and have sex with them - it’s in the Book of Genesis, chapter 9, verses 30 to 37.
This is where the interview went hilariously south for the Republican.
“You’re saying banned the Bible in school?” Selvig asked Rebandt.
“No, I’m not saying ban the Bible in school,” Rebandt replied.
“You’re saying anything that has a pornographic image should be banned,” Selvig reminded him.
“And there are some images in the Bible about, you know, sex and incest and things like that. So it sounds like you’re saying we should ban the Bible.”
Rebandt answered, “What I am saying is that the Judeo Christian principles on which our country was founded need to be brought back into culture. And I can’t say it any more clearly than that.”"

My father spent 46 years in public education; teacher, coach, principal, University teacher of teachers. He used to tell me that as a principal, every few years a group of "citizens" would come ask him about having prayer in the public school. My father said that he would respond, "Fine, no problem: AS LONG AS I GET TO WRITE THE PRAYER!" When the "citizens" indignantly responded, "Why should you write the prayer??" he would answer, "WHY SHOULD YOU?" My father used to say that if a tornado was coming toward the school and the janitor jumped up on the table and commanded, "Everybody pray the tornado misses the school", that was "establishment!!" If a student did the same thing, that was freedom of speech!! My dad was a deacon and head usher in his church and in all my growing up, he seldom if ever missed Sunday services. (If he or we were on the road, we attended a random church in another town.) It really doesn't seem like much of a quandary, does it??? School is for learning. If you want your kid to learn about his faith or religion, take him to church or teach him at home!!!

Precisely, religion has nothing to do with God. It has to do with control. Which is why I consider myself a Christian, a disciple of Christ's teachings, but do not consider myself religious. Religions were created to exclude people from God not the bring them to Him until those in power decided they could use religion as an excuse for conquest then it became paramount that all those that were earlier excluded but forced to follow their beliefs. There's a scene in Family Guy, an occasionally funny mostly gross show, where two of the characters are time traveling through parallel universes and in one they have flying cars and instant vaccines and they comment that this is the universe where the Catholic church never existed. It's both funny and sad because we truly don't know all the knowledge this world has lots thanks to the Catholics burning the books written by "pagans" and heretics. Some time around age 12, I pointed out some Old Testament inconsistencies to the nun teaching our Bible studies class. We bantered for a bit and she burst into tears and called me "Devil spawn." People in church do pay taxes. The money they give to a church is because they want to help people. You can argue about whether they do, and I'd say some definitely do more than others, like the ones I have volunteered at that feed homeless people or provide overnight lodging for them, or provide assistance to refugees, which not all do such things, but the people that give do so to help a community larger than themselves and it does not benefit society to discourage that.

Churches shouldn't be able to accommodate hundreds of millions, or even billions of dollars of assets, without being taxed. It's especially a problem when a lot of churches have become very political, and are preaching for or against certain candidates or political parties. Those churches especially need to lose their tax free status.

Yes, some churches do take in a lot, but for the number of churches there are, it is not the majority. Full disclosure, my dad is a retired minister and we never had a lot of money. My clothes were handy me downs from my cousins. My parents didn't have a house of their own when they retired. And that's ok, it wasn't for the money. It would've been nice to have a little more, for my parents to have a house of their own, but they still provided a lot for me. As far as political, it's when they tell who to vote for, or more accurately now adays, which party to vote for, that they become corrupted. Speaking about political issues is actually something I think they should do, they should speak up for the poor, for the immigrant, for the marginilized. Some have, like Martin Luther King Jr. or Dorothy Day. When they aren't in it for power, aren't seeking that, but instead putting those principles of service to others first, they have been a force in politics for good.

It's not the attendees we should be addressing here it is the church leadership that sullied the whole thing for me. Obviously, most of the people who have concerns for others within a congregation do pay taxes and contribute to causes that are indeed from a beautiful heart. And if it's Constitutionality we're talking about, putting bibles in classrooms would automatically make it compulsory to put the scriptures of all other religions in classrooms as well, as the state cannot promote one religion over any others within the Consitution. Other than that, if the context is a class about comparative religions, or that kind of a discussion in general, then great, have at it. The US has a lot of Jewish people, but I've never seen one of them doing it. Paganism is the fastest growing religious segment in the US, but I've never seen a pagan doing it. I'm just saying that if you live in a free society, to not want to ever hear a view of a religion that a lot of people adhere to in that country is not realistic. Christians are the largest religious group in the US, so it makes sense that's what you would encounter most, and more here than other democracies for I don't think it is as much a part of people's lives in other democracies, they haven't had the revivals, like among some of the hippies in the 60s that spread into quite a movement, and a lot of other ones in our history. I could be wrong on that, but I do feel the history is different which has led to a higher participation, going to church, all of that, for worse or better, not making a judgement on that, but people are more religious here so you encounter it more. I'd say trying to teach it in a classroom does, so I totally agree on that. However, this guy saying it doesn't mean that is what a majority of Christains want. I do see something that is not good happening in the American Church. Not in all branches, but it is there enough that it does need to be addressed, called out. The Bible is the oldest Dirty Joke book in the world. When you understand the metaphors and symbolisms in the text, you soon realize that those who wrote it were mixing deep spiritual subjects, with off colored humor. It took me a long time to grasp this. The gags and jokes are sophisticated. The writing style of the Bible in the original languages is in the style of a storyteller. They would tell only half of the story, and you would need to fill in the rest of the details. Or they would tell a story, where you needed to visualize the descriptions. Hebrew is a visual language. Here are three examples. Read Ezekiel 23:20. Where it reads "As the flesh of asses," this is implying the penis of a donkey. So, you must visualize the donkey's member. Same thing when it says, "Issue of Horses." Imagine a horse dick spewing out jizz. The writer is expecting the reader to get very visual with very saucy imagination, in order to fathom the depths of the visual quality of this verse. Read Genesis 19:30-38. Lot and his two daughters are in a cave. His daughters get him drunk so they can have sex with him. THAT is some back woods incest stuff going on. And the daughters even have kids. Imagine what kind of kids they have!!! Men in the Bible are not that smart. Here is a fun one. Read Genesis 26:8. King Abimelech is watching Isaac and Rebecca getting it on. The King James version uses the word " sporting". In Hebrew, it uses Metzachq. In Hebrew this means 'Make fun, or from laughing.' The English reader of 1611 will get right away what is going on. Here we have themes of voyeurism and exhibitionism. Someone needs to remind them of the fact that because of monarchies and monotheistic cultures, we fled to the new country to establish a society that allowed religious freedom. They were inspired by enlightenment philosophy which also inspired the French Revolution. But yeah, nothing to do with religion. Was mostly Deist philosophy.... Deist was unequivocally non-Christian. The Deists idea of a god was a being who created and then just left the universe alone.

I lived in Europe for two years... visited England, France, Italy, beautiful little Luxembourg, The Netherlands and Belgium. Didn't encounter a single person asking me if I was a Christian or imposing their religious belief on me. How peaceful. I love and miss Europe.
