I love divinity! I have never made it. It brings back memories from childhood. One such memory is that there was a lady in our small town. Every year at Christmastime she made divinity, sold it in the community, and gave the money to the church. She was a precious lady. She had to walk in order to sell it, and she was not a really young person. I always admire her, even though she has been gone for many years.

We love Divinity and I make pecan and also Peppermint with finely crushed candy canes to a powder. I am 80 years old and learned to make them with my Kentucky Grandmother who used no mixer. About 10 years ago I had problems holding the heavy pan of syrup to slowly pour the syrup in so here is what I did. I looked for something as high as the top of my bowl to set the pan on and lean it over the lip of the bowl. A cast iron skillet turned upside down with my cast iron tea kettle on top of it worked great for me. So, maybe those who have that problem & still want to make it can look around their kitchen and see what would work for them before starting to make this candy. You demonstrated this perfectly and everyone should be able to make it. Thanks so much, enjoy this.

Good tip! I don’t think I still have the arm strength to support a pan while pouring that slowly. Thank you!

My Mom would clean the used cans and bake Christmas breads in them, and they were so cute! She would pop them out of the cans and ice them or sprinkle them with powdered sugar, wrap them in cellophane tied with pretty ribbon, and give them to family and friends as gifts! I sure miss her!

When my mom was around 10 years old,(1924) her mama was making her some divinity for her birthday. It was a very rainy day so the humidity kept the candy from setting up. Her mama gave her the pan and a spoon. That was her birthday present. We always had black walnuts in our baked goods and candy. We had a tree in our yard so we didn't buy other nuts.

My grandmother made Divinity but my mother wouldn't make it. My mom always stated that it takes a special person to make Divinity and she never would attempt to make it. After watching this video, I'm going to make Divinity for my husband. It is suppose to be raining here all day tomorrow and I'm going to take the time to make several of the Christmas treats that you made in this series. Wish me luck. I know that my husband has had this candy, he is a few years older than me and from Arkansas. I first tried this candy in my teens because when we would go to my grandparents for Christmas, there was just so much to eat, it wasn't until I was older when I tried it for the first time. My mom and grandmother have been gone a long time. Tom, I'm going to honor them both with your recipe, wish me luck. Peace, Joy, Love and Happiness to you and your family this holiday season. Merry Christmas and much love from North Carolina.

I’m 87 years old and I remember watching my mama make divinity. And yes I remember a few times it did not turn out. Back then we had to use the cold water to tell us when it was at the correct stage. I actually made a batch or two when I was around 12 years old. Speaking of old fashion candy, have you ever heard of penuche fudge like candy? It was made with brown sugar sugar and milk and and I think real home churned butter.

I can remember how exciting it was waiting for it to finally arrive. We lived in Maine and my grandparents lived in Kansas. IT was slightly different in that there weren't pecans int the fudge but one on top (as your mawmaw did) but also a maraschino cherry! Great memories... Thank you.

I could tell that your candy set up before it came off the spoon. So I think you are right, stopping your mixer about 30 seconds earlier at least would have possibly kept it from setting up so quickly. But I bet it still tasted delicious. The only intimidating part to me is getting it on the paper to set at the right time. Thanks for giving us your grandmother’s recipe. For the life of me I have no idea how she kept from using a mixer.

@@GinaHastings-r5t I make chocolate amish bread with dark chocolate chocolate chips and I add 1/4 tsp of ground red pepper. You can add that to a store bought box fudgy chocolate cake mix and add 4oz choc chips and the small box of instant chocolate pudding. Let me know if you try it and if you like it. God bless you & Merry Christmas 🙏🏻

My mother also made peanut butter pinwheels with the divinity, just spread it out on waxed paper, spread the peanut butter on top, then roll it up, allow it to cool and set then slice the rolls, 15:01

My grandmother never used a mixer, did by hand, always used the water method and she always said for the batch to come out right it had to be a sunny day - no clouds. I could never get it to turn out. I miss her divinity so much.

THANK YOU SO MUCH❣️I wasn’t going to dare ask for divinity but I am so glad you did this. I’ve waited 2 years on YT for this( also my grandma’s way) recipe. Making after church tomorrow. Thanks again, Tom & Melissa. Merry CHRISTmas. ✝️🌟🎄

My Mother used Black Walnuts. It took forever to get the nuts out. Your hands always had a stain. Thank-you for all your time you put into your videos .... From Michigan born in KY

The divinity looks delicious! I too use just one pecan on top of the divinity dollop. It is easy to pick off one pecan for those who do not like nuts or in our case the smaller grandchildren who do not eat nuts yet. Keep on cooking!

Both my mother and my grandmother made divinity but I have never tried it. I remember how proud my mother was the first time she made it and it turned out delicious. Maybe I’ll try it this year.

Thanks for sharing the divinity. We always had it during the holidays & it is one of my favorites. One of my friends used to spreads spread it in a parchment lined baking dish, then score it before it was set.
